As for minor nations, they do not conquer, do not diplomatize, they do not make Improvements, and they have a single army behind fortifications (+2 for them on default, +1 if you have Howitzers). Defeat that in combat and the Minor Nation is yours.

Retcon applied and next map will have academy in 55 not in 7. South Sweden transferred to Karelia and the next map and status log will reflect that, too.

The thing is he can't really pull a Spain and hope to find some ally to provide him with tech. He has no allies, and no one has tech. So raw numbers are what count, and on that count he's f***.

I'm really wondering how the AAI will do. They're in a position with no hope of expanding without a big war and are small enough that not expanding is not an option.

At the same time, they're a royal pain in the Canadian State. Striking Canada would make sense, but a) They haven't done it yet, despite a really nice CB when Canada attacked Rome and b) They haven't asked me for help to do it.

Attacking Rome would leave them with no ally, and the Canadia would be more than glad to erase them from the map...

Yeah, the problem is that you decide where you capital is, but not where your borders are. Your situation would have been better if you had more than one province in Spain. Part of this is putting your capital too close to someone else's, part of it is that the map is quite crowded.

You did have a quite good opportunity to premptively strike the Canadians at turn 1, but it would have been a very risky gamble.

Edit: Or even at turn 2. You could have sent that army in Sardinia to seize Portugal and its HQ by sea, plus threatening the Canadian Capitol. With a perfectly good CB of helping your Roman allies.
