Big Pharma-Spacechem for Viagra
« on: June 04, 2015, 08:39:40 pm »

I'm surprised there's no thread on this yet honestly. Basically, it's an economic strategy game where you build increasingly convoluted factories to fold, spindle, and mutilate ingredients(discovered by your erstwhile explorers.) into powerful medical agents. The competitive game(against AI only so far) takes influences from Offworld Trading Company, and all the ingredients and effects are randomly generated.

Well, let's say you're going away from Earth on huge spaceship and suddenly shit goes wrong and you have Super Mutants. Social Experiments prepared them for this.

Looks really cool, I might have to buy the beta. I dont normally buy games pre-release but this is such a niche idea I think I'll take the risk.

I admit, when I saw the title of the thread I was convinced a spambot got out of containment.

Now that I read it, it looks like a neat game. I may have to pick it up once it get's some more press so I can get a better first impression.

It does sound like fun, especially the random ingredients part, but I don't fuck with early access stuff anymore.  I'll wait to see where it is in a few months.

Also is there like a Streamer employment office making sure everybody who talks over video games has the loudest and most irritating voice possible?

Those system requirements are pretty damn steep, given the nature of the game.
Factorio is much more complex and a much larger play area, but has (significantly) lower requirements.
M'thinks there's just a little room for optimizing... just a little. ::)
Suppose this criticism is due to them calling it a Beta, contrary to signs that it's certainly within the standard definition of an Alpha.

Despite these flaws, I'm still very much interested, just not at the current price point.

(For the record, Factorio's still in Alpha.)

I'm just worried that all factories will end up looking the same, or that there will be an obvious way to build things. I sure hope not though, I'm totally into logistics and factory building!

The game Leap Day used to be incredible for that. If this is like Leap Day squared, I'll be a happy camper (not related to drug consumption)!

I went and grabbed it.  Ingredients are randomized, sometimes you need a concentration 4 to make a drug active, sometime it takes a 12.  This means sometimes you get small factories that are "dilute it once" and others that are "Dilute it 8 times, but not 9."

Then there's improving drugs.  It may have an active effect at 4, but you have to bring it to 15 to upgrade it, then the upgraded effect is only active at 7.  So you bring it UP then DOWN, using specifically required machines.

THEN there's trying to combine drugs, which means matching one effect against another and get their numbers straight.

This is all randomized at game start.  Drugs have the same effect (anxiety relief) but can have wildly different requirements (4 vs 18, or condensor vs centrifuge) so you have to work through it for each drug of each playthrough.

Randomized homeopathy?
Reminds me of the quote.  "I drank pure water, and was accidentally consumed every homeopathy remedy ever!"

Randomized homeopathy?
It sounds like it's supposed to be real medicine though, not just water that they showed some poison to.

It reminds me of Factorio, but with more things going on.

There seems to be enough complexity here for a really enjoyable puzzle game. I'm not sure how the economic side of things is as in the first level money really wasn't an issue. There are distinct markets for each individual drug and the negative side effects will impact your drugs competitiveness against rival businesses. I can see that once you move into producing multi-effect drugs that sell across different markets things could be really fun to mess around with. I also have been enjoying the process of upgrading drugs to cure more advanced diseases. All in all I feel like the $20 is worth it for what currently exists, anything produced from this point forward will be a bonus and with early access game development can end very abruptly. That said I am a sucker for these types of puzzle/economic management games so it may not be worth taking the plunge just yet if you are not specifically looking for a game like this to play.
