Real food, or plump helmets
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:37:00 pm »

So....

Who else forgets to eat real food when you've got plenty of surplus plump helmets in stock?

And... As you get hungrier, you work harder to farm more plump helmets...

And then you realize you really should get some real food for yourself.

I wonder what plump helmets taste like. They look yummy.

I'd imagine they would taste fairly bland. Most mushrooms do. Think Cauliflower bland.

Blek.

But they're purple!

And portabello mushrooms have almost too much flavour.

I think they taste like applesauce on the inside, but replace the apple flavor with mushroom flavor. And I think there is a juicy substance in the stalks that dwarves squeeze out to drink, and then they throw the tough dried out stalks to the dogs. And the way they eat the mushroom is this: They slice a hole in the cap of the shroom, and scoop out the gooey stuff inside to eat. Then they drink the stalk-juice, then while they work they chew on the 'skin'.

I spent way too much time on that.

The standard white button mushrooms we grew up with suck.  In the US at least, it's becoming easier to find other mushrooms that actually do have flavour.

I'll have to look into it. However, I actually do like the plain white mushrooms. Even if they are bland.

Morals are for sissies!

Oh.

Well portabello's are good when grilled next to a steak.  It can absorb a lot of the steak flavor.

I'd rather like the taste of grilled mushroom, they need no alien flavouring save for some seasoning.

Is this tread about "weird fungus-food v. well-known human-food" in DF or is it just a rambling spam thread?

In case of the former: I'd like more strange food, no dwarf should have to endure humanfood! Unless it contains real humans.

I've had morels. They taste so.... mushroomy! I found it odd that I'd never tasted a mushroom that tastes so much like a mushroom...

Excellent.

Oh, and I've cooked Portabellos. Almost too mushroomy for my pasta sauce.

Uhhh... Dwarf Fortress. Yes.

I like Helmaroc's idea, that there's gooey stuff inside the plump helmets. Doesn't that sound great? Purple mushroom goo!

We were talking about mushrooms, not about potted meat product.

It'd be fun if the dwarves could pick up mushrooms in the woods.

I suppose that's just a mod away.  Probably more appropriate to have it be elves, too.  That Lithuanian guy should have a crack at it -- elves and mushrooms and berries, just like in the countryside.  With some mushrooms to be used for poison extract (i.e. process-to-barrel trade item).

mmmm, potted meat product. Actually thats not a bad idea. Gives us another use for tin. :-)

"Urist Taslitast prefers eating -tinned giant scorption meat-"

Personally I've found mushrooms to be more of a texture/filler item in foods. I like them but they're generally not included for flavor. Of course, some do soak up flavors pretty easily. I've found that a little olive oil goes nice with portabellas.

This tin contains spinach - it makes you feel like Popeye!
This tin contains candied plump helmet.
This tin contains pureed Titan meat with quarry leaves.

These could be fun items to find while you're adventuring in the Dungeons of Doom.  Er.. some ancient, abandoned dwarf fortress.
