Joan turned around, lifting her shackled wrists behind her, so Elias could access them quickly.

She spoke quickly, eager to get a move on. This was sort of an awkward situation.

" ...that, what you say...a zero-sum Sochab, outlight? Haikimona, outlight. Pref cals and surge to wrissles and longbangs. That, stayfar you, big job, a grand note thusly-pref note bigger jobs, run big shoulders. Be crack up wrissles, neg bedeck my affb's less I perm. Give you a shine, lengthwise, big job." She said dryly, as gunshots and explosions rang out in the distance. She might have been trying to make a joke.

...

Farm slang is often difficult to understand.

Action: Be released! Eventually.

((Also, questions about my telepathy. 'I assume I can do this without alerting them? Also, is my telepathy one way or two way?' I was fishing for info. :p I wanted to know if people could know I was reading them, and also if I could project thoughts/words.

Also, incomprehensible scifi slang is GO.))

(So, no one understands the telepath, the big guy wants to punch me in the face and apparently 8 Intelligence means he can't figure out that he shouldn't give his real name, and the sneak is trying to split the party before it's even started)

(We're off to a great start. :P)

((10 Intelligence! It's Wisdom that he has an 8 in, hence he's not at all good at thinking on his feet or taking cues. He's not really dumb, so to speak, just has no idea what you're doing and why. And also gunshots unsettle him greatly.

If, on the other hand, you had informed him of a plan beforehand, he'd be much less confused.))

Elias gives Joan a look of utter incomprehension and wonders internally what he had done to deserve being assigned to work with such a simple hick.

Joan gently felt the surface thoughts of Elias, not surprised-he thought she was stupid. Most people did, which why she usually stayed quiet. She was terribly disappointed. Her mood, which had been previously buoyant despite the danger, fell. She didn't know the words to explain to him what she felt. He wouldn't understand them. He wouldn't care. No one did. Her body tensed and grew anxious.

Joan chided herself for trusting, for trying to reach out. What was the point? She remembered her recurring nightmare, or maybe a fantasy. Maver was dead, and she had died with him. The bullets tearing them apart-this, her whole life now, it was all a death dream-desperate synapses flying between her dying brain cells, a sort of purgatory she had constructed for herself. She was just waiting to bleed out now, to die alongside him. It was better that way. Much better...

Suddenly she was angry, as if Elias had reached out and struck her. She turned about and responded bitterly.

"...You bescrew! ...Neg...I not..'Hicks'...Neg...not...Simple..."

A look of confusion is quickly tinged with fear.
"What did you just say? Say that again."

Elias stares at Joan with a look of disbelief.
"You can read my mind?"
