Very lame suggestion but have you tried ignoring the objective, getting into a (hopefully) advantageous formation near the spawn point and just camping until she shows up?

Possible, but then the aliens are going to get 8+ kills and you'll fail the mission.

-spoiler-
I'd call it a phylactery, personally.
But that's... y'know... just as hokey.

Can't do that in a retaliation mission unfortunately. The aliens will just kill all the civilians. The chosen will always show up for the first retaliation mission.

I think the only way to deal with the assassin during the first meeting is to let it scan once of your guys so it'll leave. I really don't think you can beat it at that stage.

Maybe one of you guys can do it though.

She actually becomes really easy once you get some gear. It's just this first mission. And the last one.

Man, reapers are great. Just did an alien facility mission with just the reaper. Snuck in, planted the X4, dropped a mimic beacon to avoid being shot to death, and evaced as the berserker queen thundered towards my position.

They're just so useful. Having them find every enemy on the map and cripple the pods with claymore+remote start is so valuable, even if their toe-to-toe damage isn't so great.

I always thought the movement-capable sniper rifle offset that... until I killed the hunter and got his better gun anyway.
Wonder if I can give that one to my Reaper?

Well, I just beat the game, and:

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

I'd be really interested in an XCOM game with more diverse characters. Imagine XCOM where you're working together with ADVENT, allowing use of some of their troops under certain conditions.

Well, with the right Covert Ops you can actually get ADVENT troops for some of your missions in this XCOM

Yup.

I call my ADVENT trooper Barney. He carries my team, simply because I use him as a meatshield and he has some kind of ungodly luck that makes him immune to being shot at.

Well either I am rustier than a bucket of rust or this game upped difficulty above 9000% because I just lost two squaddies on the first mission and gravely injured the rest. And only one of those was from an objectively "wtf didn't I move the squaddie before shooting that was fucking stupid" moment.

The game definitely feels harder early on, but late game you end up with an insane power level due to covert action buffs and the Templer/reaper.... the skirmisher is kinda bad though really... at least compared to the other faction heroes and most of your units.

What's wrong with the Skirmisher?

Sure the Templar does way more damage and is tanker and the Reaper is a super scout but the Skirmisher is endlessly useful.

He can fly all over the map and attack twice each turn if he wants (none of his abilities end his turn). Later on he even gets his own version of bladestorm so you can do this insane combo: Wrath / Justice + Shoot them + Shoot them again with third action + Bladestorm. The only thing holding him back is his ammo count, but this can be remedied with weapon mods.

Also he can get two item slots as opposed to the Templar's one and the Reaper's zero. I don't even know why the Reaper's character model has pockets on it.

Two item slots when throwing grenades doesn't end his actions- great stuff.

But I will admit that the Reaper for me has flipped from 'sub-par' to 'above average' simply because of the ability they get halfway through which makes them unable to be revealed from a killing shot.
Considering the mediocre strength of their weapon, it makes them great for taking the final chips off enemy units with little to no risk.
I'd still put my skirmisher higher though, but that might be because bullpups have had a breakthrough or two on this run.

Also, I've found that Alien Hunters gear is both powerful and an incredible money-sink, with that scale tipping towards late-game. I don't need a second pistol now that I have Hunter's, I don't need a second melee weapon now that I have Assassin's, so the only non-redundant weapon is the bolt caster, because psi-operative can use it whilst my support is using the better assault rifle from Warlock.
This, for some 500 supplies and god knows how many elerium crystals down the hatch. Painful.

I love the skirmisher, he is very useful in many and varied situations. In the mission to kill a chosen all my soldiers were down to 1 or 2 hp when crysalids came charging just before I could land the killing blow at the Chosen...but the skirmisher stunned them just as they passed close to him.

The reaper is the one on the weak side. I find it useful just in rare situations.
