Or at LEAST Chief Waffles... Accept based on politeness that my intent is only that I am not impressed with this expansion yet (Mostly due to lack of information).
..Are you asking him to only accept because it'd be "polite"? Because everyone else can read your posts in general and how you post typically.

Yes... I am asking him to accept ONLY because it would be polite. Which I figured he would take only because he doesn't really want to harass anyone or really fight with me (Either or really). Regardless whether he pictures himself in the right or not.

This hinges on him having a reason to be polite to you.

You know, it'd have been much simpler to say "I'm skeptical of this expansion and will wait to see how it shakes out before considering buying it". Like a few other people have said without getting into some weird giant argument about how theoretically good the expansion is going to be.

Rulers will no longer react to reloads and actions out of their line of sight.

I mean, I'm still probably playing with Alien Rulers turned off, but this seems like good news to me. Rulers need nerfs.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Turns out there's some new info from a twitch interview. I'm copying and pasting a summary from reddit.

  • Confirmed that the Chosen do not use the Ruler Reaction system. They operate like normal enemies that are very, very powerful.
  • "We've actually redesigned the rulers completely for the expansion". He doesn't go into what this means specifically but it sounds a bit like he's soured on how Rulers work currently, and they needed to be reworked to fit in the new expansion. Speculating here, but would not be surprised if Ruler reactions got the boot and they're more like the Chosen now.
  • The Chosen level up over the course of the game. They get new armor, weapons, abilities, and strengths. Their appearance will change over the course of the game, and their new abilities and strengths are procedural so it will be different every time you fight them. They're designed to be a foil to the way the player progresses throughout the game.
  • The Chosen aren't all about squad wiping in one turn. They're trying to find the commander, and their top priority at first is to disable and capture your soldiers so they can be interrogated, which gives them progress towards finding XCOM HQ. Captured soldiers can later be rescued.
  • For the Hero classes, they earn abilities different than ordinary soldiers. There's a new "Ability Points" mechanic (as well as a combat intelligence stat that determines how fast a given soldier gains those points) that the player earns for pulling off tactical maneuvers. Then, a new facility (the Training Center) that lets you spend them on abilities. Regular soldiers also get a bunch of new skills through this method, but the hero classes ONLY get points like this.
  • Reaper is about making attacks while concealed without breaking concealment, and sabotaging enemies.
  • The Skirmisher is focused on getting as many actions per turn as possible. One of their abilities is a grapple that can either pull enemies in, or grapple toward an enemy, and finish with a melee attack with a spiked gauntlet. "Ripjack".
  • Regular soldiers can wear the Hero class outfits.
All of it seems really awesome. Especially the stuff about the Chosen; I'm really glad they're not just new Ruler variants.

Oh, and [Firaxis] added the ability to specify the "Faction" look of your character pool soldiers.

Mother of god.
The simplicity of this made me giggle.

More news from reddit: Sparks and Alien Rulers are going to be revamped. with Solomon saying they will be redesigned completely with the new expansion. Chosen get upgrades over time. Also, achievements are up.

Spoiler: New Achievements (click to show/hide)
From this we can see Chosen abducting soldiers (which you can recapture), the new Bond system, and what appears to be Fatigue. Also, the phrase "15 headshots against the Lost in one turn" implies that there will potentially be a lot of Lost on the screen, which makes me happy (Newfoundland = bestfoundland).

The bond system sort of existed before, there's a hidden stat for soldier relationships that affects how they appear on the Avenger and in the Skyranger.

I'm glad to hear about the Ruler rework and that the Chosen do something sort of interesting, but I'm ultra sour on "hero classes". That shit is not what X-Com is about. The whole progression of the game is your weak people achieving greatness against a superior foe. Superior soldiers ruin all of that, and it's no coincidence that the least interesting phase of X-Com is when you fill out your tech and aren't as threatened by the aliens.

So I just got this game on sale, and I was wondering: is it different enough mechanically from the first XCOM that I'd want to do at least part of a vanilla game first, or would I be better served just jumping right into Long War to keep story spoilers (and repitition) to a minimum?

I did... But just saying that earned me ire. Just not being impressed was FAR too negative and I then tried to justify my viewpoint as valid.

What makes you think I just spontaneously went into huge long diatribes?

Because when someone says that you are being unreasonably negative they are saying "Your opinion is a wrong opinion to have"

I'd say it is quite different. You should play a vanilla first, especially since this game's long war is very very hard.

They also, pure speculation here, threw out their current method of harassing you (pure chance) and instead they are actually placed on the world screen like pawns in a similar way that the Chosen are.

Essentially being like side chosen.
