Got to play through the first two missions (tutorial) last night.

Here are my thoughts so far:

1) Firaxis was right, Commander difficulty is tough
2) Very fun, overall. Brutal in a good way, and I'm enjoying the new mechanics they put in so far.
3) Too much Long War with Red Fog on has screwed me up. I need to remember that Full cover is a little bit of cover, half cover is worthless, and that enemy at 1 health is exactly as dangerous as his full health buddy.
4) Advent Commanders are the new Thin Men. Do not let them get a shot, for they almost never miss.
5) Zombies can move further than you'd expect.
6) Sectoids are sneaky flanking bastards.

What I had happen on my first non-tutorial mission last night (I modded it very slightly so that my max soldiers in battle will end up as 8 instead of 6):
1. Rookies can't hit a damn thing.
2. My ranger having to clean up all of the first pod themself.
3. Ranger gets gravely wounded by an Advent Officer.
4. Goddamn idiot rookie panicked by sectoid throws grenade at teammates. He somehow survives the mission to be promoted to sharpshooter of all things. This leads to one of them dying from
5. Ranger has to slice up the sectoid despite low hp because no one can hit the damn thing with bullets. One grenade was in range though.

Mission results: 1 dead rookie, 4 badly wounded.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Someone do a mission using only the machete. It probably can be done. And send me pictures.

Meanwhile, I have an hour logged in XCOM 2. None of which has gotten me to the main menu. So, the entire thing is unplayable and I've done everything short of redownloading the entire damn thing.

Snarking at the 'I can't play XCOM 2' litany is coming back to bite me in the ass, isn't it?

I am making all my guys have black armor, with bowler hats/fedoras and LMGs. I will also have all of their last names be Soprano.

In xcom EW i had a mech based on this design. He had a weird habit of spraying random things with bullets that inevitably turned out helpful later on.

I used to use the name Shadow Wolf on a forum so now obviously it's a mandatory part of every soldier's uniform.

Press play, instant game crash as well?

As someone who's played a lotta game on day 1 release I don't think it's ever been quite as massive a disappointment as not even getting past the launcher :(

I wonder whether I should import some of my favorites from my previous game. Like Charlotte, Trips, or Spitfire; or Deadbolt, or Demon. I feel like all my best assaults in EU and EW were female, and my top Sniper was always male.

I hope Firaxis gives some sort of official response to the bugs. Even just "We're working on it" would be nice.

Yep, though not quite instant; it blackscreens indefinitely and at some point crashes in the background. And checking the logs, it seems to have loaded the scenery for the main menu (I presume from what I've seen in preview LPs) without any major errors.

Sharpshooter is credit to team on that retaliation! Even managed to pull of a 25% shot at the end to wipe out the remaining sectoid.

My squad has one medic Specialist leader that stands back and heals.
2 snipers sitting above sniping people.

Rest is a mix of as many Grenadiers as possible laying down the hurt and a Ranger when I want someone ninja to stun or sneak around.

I'm doing pretty well on Commander mode aside from some of the typlcal bs losses (well what can you do when 3 people miss reaction shots on a sectoid  and then someone gets mind controlled and then your guys manage to 2shot the mind controlled dude), but the timer is growing short. I'm trying to just bumrush to destroy the aliens because holding off the World timer clearly isn't working for me.

So despite the relatively great playthrough, I might still lose on the world map.

The game actually caused a page fault when it first started, for me, because it tried to run at maximum quality before the automatic graphics settings procedure had a chance to run. Try going into the config files and setting it to low resolution, windowed mode, and lower quality manually. Specifically you need the XComEngine.ini file in the Documents\My Games\XCOM2\XcomGame\Config folder in your user directory. Search for the [SystemSettings] block, change bUseMaxQualityMode to false, Fullscreen to false, and AllowD3D11 to True if it isn't. Resolution is toward the bottom of the block, as ResX and ResY, with minimum being 1280x720.
