Might wanna take a second look at the roofs and peripheries of the buildings mate

no, thats exactly what I mean.  if everyone in the burbs is living off the grid and in survivalist mode, who is powering their electronic billboard and bus stops?  its totally incongruous.

Internal alien tech maybe? Services are shut down, but Advent is still around to maintain them, and it's not unfeasible considering their tech level.

Only the bits the Advent consider important are maintained?
No point making sure the homes have power if you want them to move to the city, but the bus stop is important for that.

They're not off the grid, though. They're directly outside the supercities. That means they're presumably getting something out of the cities, else they'd be located wherever. The train stop (and according to the article, billboard) are operated by ADVENT.

Even if they weren't, electricity is not a mysterious alien-only technology requiring exotic materials.

I guess I didn't get that from the article.  It sounded like Advent wanted to herd these guys into the cities, and were cutting off resources to anything outside.  'Burbans were like survivalist types, resisting, and XCOM would visit these places to kick out Advent squads that might be there to relocate people.

If you're trying to force everyone into your concentration camp, why maintain their utilities?

Anyway, its all weird and the incongruous art direction with the new floaters is just... I guess they're just putting in whatever they think looks cool at the moment, and I should stop asking questions and just expect to be able to blow some shit up.

Any word on if upper stories will collapse if you shoot out their supports?  Probably not...

They do and are, but they're not going cold turkey on it, they're just letting it rot. Remember, ADVENT is basically the official world government at this point, and they're trying to be very enticing and good-guy-ish about it. You probably do get full post-apocalyptic survivalists way out wherever, but suburbia is still (neglected "wouldn't you be happier inside") civilization.

I swear this came up and was answered... I assume not, else I'd remember it better. Don't think free aiming is back in either, unfortunately.

ADVENT playing at their shining cities on the hill vs. rebels outside requires that they have at least some sympathy for outsiders, since most people in the cities are those that accepted ADVENT offers. Hence, they can't demonize all outsiders as rebels, because that would raise doubts in the minds of their adherents, who know for a fact that not all outsiders are terrorists.

So, the suburbs get assistance from ADVENT in the same way Somalians get assistance from the UN, coupled with enticing pleas to leave their dangerous terrorist-infested homes and take the generous offers of resettlement in an ADVENT city.

I clearly remember a dev interview where they said that it would be easy to mod free-aim in, with the provided UDK tools.  In the next sentence, he said someone might even add action-points back in.

So I'm mostly hopeful that this gets transformed into the kind of game that I actually want to play...

ADVENT playing at their shining cities on the hill vs. rebels outside requires...

EXACTLY.  This is what I'm talking about.  Makeup whatever head canon is necessary to explain this bizarre concoction they are showing us.

Personally, I choose to believe that a lady from the neighborhood decorating committee visits each house with an electric car battery in a wheelbarrow, siphons off a little juice to charge it up, and everyone contributes to the community bus stop to help remind them of old times.

It's not made up headcannon, it's basic logical extrapolation from the statement that "suburbs are minimally supported by ADVENT, filled with people trying to reclaim a pre-invasion lifestyle". Do you really need your hand held through every level of worldbuilding?

lol. dont be so angry, dude.

I had perfectly rational extrapolation going until the previews kept getting crazier and crazier, now its time to flush and enjoy the ride.

I mean, people are clearly taking this stuff way more seriously than the developers are.

I was with them through the snaketits, but I basically gave up around the time the floater-angels rolled out.

It really just sounds like you're trying to find excuses to be mad at the game.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Can't tell if legitimate troll or just an unbelievable lack of self-awareness. Anyway, the new wilderness and suburban settings look amazing. I'm assuming they'll be procedurally generated like the urban maps but has there been any official word on that yet? Also I'm guessing some plot-critical levels will be built rather than generated but I don't think anything's been said about that either.
