I guess, then, that the consensus is that LW should've made sectopods into nightmares?

It was actually part of a "strategy" for training reaction fire, giving the soldiers basic pistols which couldn't quite pierce powered armor from the front:
http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Experience_Training#Reactions_training

You'd mind control an alien, force it to pick up a pistol between too lines of rookies, and let it wander around between them getting shot at.  The misses would plink harmlessly off xcom front armor, and I'm pretty sure a muton would be safe from the hits.  Silly but fun.

It's hell man. It's hell.
They even removed "easy" from the difficulty list.

Yes. Harder than mechtoids anyway... altho i can't say much but a shielded mechtoid is generally a bigger problem than a Sectopod adn that's kinda weird if you think about it.

Long War isnt just harder (many people say that it is in fact easier...) but it adds detail and depth that the default game lacks.  Even the developers endorse it as the game they wish they had made.

The extra classes, weapons, and equipment provide tactical depth that makes the game massively more fun, though unfortunately there was no way for them to mod in free targeting or collateral injuries from autofire.

The air game is totally revamped, aliens flying actual missions and accruing research which you can thwart.  It used to be the timewarp button was a "give-me-a-mission" button, and the missions were false choices where you had to choose who to make happy or sad.  Now the aliens fly actual missions which you can detect either with sat coverage, or (with less reliability) by having air presence on a continent.  You have to choose what missions you can /afford/ to fly, which means you need to play a tighter logistical game with both human and material resources.

I'm hoping the devs were serious when they endorsed the mod, and these sorts of sensibilities are making it into NuNuCom (NuTooCom?  DeuceNeuCom?)

Gotta say I am loving Long War so far. The fatigue system means you actually use more than one squad of soldiers, and the classes are much more diverse. I've just gotten my first abduction mission, still very early in this game.

Yes. So much yes.

Welcome to ZomboCom.

Anyway I do hope they expand on psionics, but make it not that common or easy to access. On the first game I ended up getting a whole squad of psionic commandos without much difficulty + the one the plot hands to you. It took some recruiting effort, but it wasn't hard at all. Maybe the RNG just favoured me at the time.

Yes it got more complicated (but not that complicated) and while i'm not sure how the higher difficulties stack up but normal difficulty vanilla nucom is piss easy. I could smash my way through the campaign without much of a hassle but i'd get an actual challenge at classic.
In Long war i'm getting a proper challenge on normal (the previous easy) and i can't do any real progress on on classic.

So maybe it got easier for those insane people playing on impossible ironman because they can actually give smoke grenades and flashbangs to rookies making them semi useful when sectoids need 3 hits from the balistic machineguns to politely die.

Yeah, based on the dates of previous posts, it should be 2-3 hours more.

By the way, this is my PTW post.
