Edit: This Hunter Chosen is such a weakling. I fought him without any of his weaknesses and he didn't even do anything. He kept trying to do that long range / next-turn attack but all you have to do is move a little out of the way and he misses. He actually died to the militia. I think I only shot him once.

The Psychic Chosen looks to be a complete cakewalk as well. He's weak to Templars and melee attacks. Lol. I'm looking forward to seeing him die in one hit.

The Assassin is pretty scary though for me. She's immune to explosives, reaction, overwatch, and melee. She also returns fire if you miss.

There was this really cool Lost mission where you need to rescue a resistance VIP surrounded by Lost. It's frigging fantastic. The map is basically one straight line. All the Lost come in from the top where the VIP is, and you need to get there, rescue him, then run all the way back to the start to evac while giant hordes swarm you. Shit is crazy intense. My sniper had 50 kills in that map simply by camping at the top of a tall building in the middle of the map.

--------------

Edit edit:

Uh, don't assault the Chosen's bases until you're in full late game gear. I found out the hard way that trying to do it with railguns is.... insane.

This is particularly cruel because if you fail, you don't get a second chance.

Y'know, despite my doubts about it and the usual XCOM writing, I'm actually really enjoying the Chosens' personalities. Particularly the Assassin and Hunter. Sure, they're both fairly cheesy, but their personalities and taunts (particularly the Hunter) are actually pretty entertaining in the general sense.
And "entertaining" in a good way.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Since they changed Alien Rulers so that they don't have free moves when your unit is out of their line of sight, one thing I discovered you can do to cheese the fight is to go with a bunch of snipers sitting somwhere in the back.

Have some dude with the freeze grenade go up and aggro the ruler, freeze it for 3 turns. Then let your snipers go to town for three turns.

I have made a terrible mistake.

"Play ironman impossible," I said. "You've done it with the base game. How hard could it be?"

The aliens are wiping the floor with me. Well, time to go back to veteran difficulty. I lost two campaigns before I even got mag weapons.

Yeah, they've certainly upped the difficulty.

I think one issue is that they added so much stuff but the base game doesn't have enough time to deal with all of it. I can't imagine how crazy impossible ironman is without enabling double length avatar project. Not to mention all the fatigue mechanics, which compounds with how you fight basically all the time now (or do covert missions). So your entire team is constantly out of it. Thus you need to recruit way more people, except you can't because they're too expensive.

A lot of these new missions can get really challenging too. The Chosen are nowhere near as powerful as the alien rulers, but they really hurt you bad on the campaign map, which honestly is worse.

I'm also perpetually bankrupt. There's so much shit you need to buy.

Yeah, War of the chosen REALLY messed up campaign balance between the fatigue mechanics and just how quickly the chosen get a bead on you. And with how slow XP gain is with the removal of a lot of upgrades from the GTS, you can't even unlock the bloody mission to hunt them down in a timely fashion.

I seem do be doing fairly well so far in my commander game, though I'm admittedly playing Bronzeman and not Ironman. Nor am I all that far along, having just done the Black site. I am working on hunting down the Assassin, though. And I've only lost one mission so far, and that with no deaths.

Good luck! When you go kill the Assassin, don't rely too much on grenades and one use items. Also bring a group healing specialist.

The mission is a gauntlet like the final mission. You won't have enough grenades to make it through and you need to be in perfect condition for the final battle, hence the medkits.

You're not playing ironman, so it's not the biggest deal but under normal circumstances you cannot retry the mission. I had to abandon my 20 hour veteran ironman game here when my A+ team got completely wrecked.

My assassin is immune to explosions (no idea if that is normal), so I wouldn't have brought many grenades anyway. But good to know that it's a gauntlet like that.

What are people's opinions on the various Hero soldiers? So far I've found them to be generally useful but not strictly better than the base classes. Although the Templar is pretty great, I must say.

The skirmisher is great. Mobile, two attacks AND being able to pull the viper's grappling trick on the enemy? Absolutely fantastic! And their weapon upgrades are unlocked when you get better assault rifles, so they're pretty easy to upgrade as well.

The Skirmisher is insane. They can just do soo much in a single turn, both mobility and attack-related. I'm loving their versatility.
The Reaper is generally nice. I've found that their gun is practically useless in any combat situation, but they're a nice scout and Remote Start is just such an awesome ability when the opportunity presents itself.
The Templar, I dunno. I want to like them, but he feels much less useful once Advanced enemies start popping up. Getting killing moves with a Templar starts to get pretty hard and so far their abilities seem pretty lame. The starter Focus bolt-thing is just a bit of guaranteed damage (at the cost of the more-useful Focus), and so far none of the unlockable abilities seem appealing to me.

But yeah. I'm presently surprised by the Faction soldiers. They definitely don't feel like they overshadow my soldiers. They're really nice to have and broaden your options in combat quite a bit when present, but I wouldn't really say they're strictly better than the standard classes.

Also, sidenote. If anyone has a Chosen with the "Brutal" strength, you should probably download and activate this fix mod. Apparently there's a bug where it repeatedly reduces your soldiers' max will instead of current. So numerous encounters with a Brutal Chosen will reduce your soldiers to rookies. Linked mod supposedly fixes it.

I kinda like all of them.

In terms of power, the Templar is the clear winner. Each battle he starts out kinda like a shitty ranger, but after a single rend he becomes a monster that just gets stronger and stronger. At 3 rend, you've basically won. I think you need to level him up early as most of his cool shit is high level. Seriously, the guy can passively reflect attacks, can get bladestorm, etc. It's nuts.

The Skirmisher is like a jack-of-all-trades. At high levels, the guy is ultra mobile, just zipping around the map and killing shit all over the place. He has so damn many mobility skills. He can kinda fulfill any role I think and is generally nice to have no matter what the circumstance. He can do a ton of damage if he wants, or he can... *gasp* skirmish.

The Reaper is really useful for scouting. The massively decreased detection range is so damn useful. Not much good in a fight though, but they can do some damage. I mostly just use the claymore (after the upgrade). I like bringing them on missions where I don't start in stealth. Just send them flying off to the front and scout like half the map in one go.

----

Incidentally, my most powerful "hero" characters aren't any of those. I gave my personal character and his bond so many skills they can fight the entire world. I invested 200 AP in both of them.

I actually don't recommend that. While it's fun to have a supercharacter, if you give someone too many skills they can't actually use all of them so it's quite a waste. Not to mention with fatigue you can't even use them too often anyway.

I have to agree that Skirmishers are amazing. They're like infantry if they could teleport and had electro-whips, whats not to love?

Templar are my favorite, but that's probably more due to their flavor than actual usefulness. They're good melee combatants but they run into the classic problem of "if I run forward and slice this dude I'll probably just activate another pod". Also so far their actual psi abilities seem pretty lame.

Reapers are kinda underwhelming IMO. They're superb scouts but they're weak in combat early and seem to only get worse as the game goes on. I guess if you really value scouting ability they're certainly nice, but I've been preferring rangers so I actually have a competent fighter if need be.

Also, not sure if it's been mentioned but the story and cutscenes have been seriously grinding my gears.
Some really good gameplay brought low by absolutely shockingly weak attempts at depth.
