That must be one of my scouts (Long War) (I am bad at names.), who time and again saved the squad by running the overwatch and allowed me to reposition and get his squadmates out of tight spots. I always arm my scouts with shotguns and use their incredible movement range to flank everything, so he had a lot of kills to his name. Not a lot of willpower though, as he got more than one critical injury. Most don't grow very old, as they also wear light armor. So one day he panicked at some mindfray and someone else did what was usually his speciality. A simple floater flanked and shot him. May he have a shotgun with unlimited ammo in heaven and deal out unlimited in the zone shots.

My most memorable character will always be Combo from China.

He was my volunteer when I beat my first ironman classic run. This was back when I think only like... a handful of people did it (it was around 5 days after the game came out). I was super psyched. No clue what the hell was going on in the final run. I didn't know you had unlimited tries for the final mission too.

I screamed out "COMBOOO NOOOOOOOO!!!!" at the end as well.

Huh. My volunteer was also named Combo, and wore pink armor. What a coincidence :V

My volunteer was called Messiah, no input required :P

A support, and one of my starting soldiers, he was my first psi soldier in my first ever finished game, surviving the whole way through despite numerous missions in which he ended with 1 health and no medkits. He saved countless lives and took even more, and clearly his comrades recognised this, giving him his nickname. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

She was the chosen one, in my case.

My favourite soldier in OpenXcom was the Mystery General. I had no clue where they came from, I dod recognise the name, but there they were, on my rookie-farming Avenger team.

One transfer to the Badass Squad later and they were doing flying breach insertions with the best.

They died when I misfired a blaster bomb, along with the entire Badass Squad.

Right... so my current soldier i selected for being THE chosen one is a sniper nicknamed ghost.

Now funny story. Ghost was my first (and only) useful sniper this game AND my first psi trooper. Additionally i was extra careful with her so she got the snazziest armor (ghost armor) since she was a squaddie.

As squaddie snipers are borderline useless i just had her use the ghost armor to scout and oneshot/finish off aliens with psi.
Lo and behold her nickname was ghost.
Then i started adding genemods and replacing the ghost armor with mimetic skin and leg muscles so she can use PSI armor and STILL be a ghost.
Right now i'm finishing genemoding my last temple ship squad member (I wanted everyone snazzed up for the temple ship because i'm doing my first ironman classic run (I want to 100% the game... anyone interested in giving me bubonic?) and have no idea how hard it might be, so i'm drawing the game out just to have a full squad of 6 genemodded PSI monsters.)

EDIT: Apparently i raided the base, overseer and discovered the psi soldier faster then the world average... but took twice the time to finish the game (TBH it was mostly because i faffed a bit too much with the final squad).
Also i lost one battle (A failed attempt at getting Lone Wolf where i had to evac)

Bubonic should be pretty easy to get just by playing normal matches, and they're decently fun and quick in my experience.

Note that I have not played in forever, so if the MP scene is just completely dead then yeah.

Is it like the L4D2 contagion achievement, where you get it from playing against someone who has it?

Made sense in Left 4 Dead, seems a bit odd in XCOM :/

Indeed it is. It's just an achievement, and kind of a neat one, so I don't feel like it needs a strong reason to be in there.

Haha the multiplayer was so gimmicky, but at least it was gimmicky in a fair way (everyone got same troop roster to pick from).  The glitches, particularly being able to see troop locations via where you are allowed to move, was unforgivable.

It always came down to either carefully kitted out xcom soldiers or some kinda of suadsight bullshit.  My squad of choice was six xcom soldiers with light plasma rifles, the jumpy gene mod, and 5 of them had alien grenades.  Most enemy squads were pretty much done on the first turn of combat.  Everyone was using similar cheese like all cloaked squads, multiple sectoid commanders, overwatch camping a corner of the map, ect.  I even met someone who used two extremely elite MECs as their entire squad and exploited to begin the combat with a blind grenade that hit my entire squad.  They still lost tho.  Pretty much everyone lost to the grenade spam, it got boring.

I played multiplayer a little when it came out, and it often disconnected and it was annoying that I couldn't turn off voice/use a push-to-talk option ("Hey Sensei, could you quit breathing so loud?")

Later, after some updates, it just crashed every time I tried to play. I even reinstalled a few times to no avail, and gave up after that.

As for "who are you gonna put in game" I'll pretty much definitely try and recreate Alice "Socks/Harbinger" the first AND ONLY volunteer I have beat the game with. This was way back in vanilla EU too.

I'm pretty sure that was actually my very first game too. I still remember her story. (though I forgot her last name, I'll have to load up that game again and look at it)
Spoiler: The Saga of "Socks" (click to show/hide)

Other then that I think I'll put in the Williams twins. They were the first "twins" I got in game, one assault and one support. Assault was decked out in all black and nicknamed "BlackKnight" while Support was in all white and nick'd "WhiteKnight"
