Melee is either going to be OP or flash in vanilla.
Though, I guess it will lean toward OP if there is a limit on ammunition.  Not too bad, considering that old X-Com(at least in Apocalypse), you had to bring in your own limited ammo supply and were up the creek when you do totally run out of ammo.
In Apocolypse, you soon got alien disruptor beams with unlimited ammo, also how much ammo were you using? I've swept entire maps with auto cannon incendiary and never run out. If this game brings back finite ammo, they'll probably let you load up more on a soldier.

As far as this game, Psi trooper mind control will probably be better than melee because it doesn't require putting your soldier at risk and also doesn't use ammo. I'm also expecting the plasma swords to be a significant investment considering how deadly they look. Edit: also plasma swords would still need something to power them wih, so that might be finite too.

By the way, any release of what these 5 classes will be?

Regardless of how effective it is, I'm slicing some aliens.  Really doubt its going to be OP, I mean there's no way this game is changing so much that overwatch isn't a thing.

It would actually be really cool if there were aliens that you had to melee to kill effectively.  It would let them make the game much harder without the player feeling powerless; since without that feature there's only so tough they can make the aliens and still keep the game fair.

Regarding dimension traveling volunteer... think about how much of a WTF moment that would be for newcomers to the series.

Considering melee worked alright with mec's (and their large health pools), I'd say with a quick enough character, it could work pretty well.

@Apoc/Ammo, you had to research and stuff for the unlimited ammo stuff.  Which were usually better in most every way.  But you do start with ammo chugging equipment.
Maybe I'm just a poor player.  I have indeed run out of ammo, since I favored playing full dakka in real time mode.

Well by the looks of it there'll be a sniper or sniper-equivalent, since there was a soldier with an impressively sized rifle and we saw her using a scope.

Thanks to grenade-launcher man, we can also speculate there'll be a heavy. That leaves two. I guess a medic/support is pretty much mandatory, leaving one who could be anything.

I'm just going to say I don't know how to feel about this announcement yet, since I haven't got to read it in detail.

But owlga is currently planning nostalgia boner stroking at an alarming level, send help. Poi.

Classwise, the drone seemed to be controlled by the guy who was caught by the snake - might be a class in and of itself.

Volunteerwise - I imagine the ship collapse could've led to a parallel universe, in which XCOM lost - the volunteer starts to avenge and fight back. Maybe :P

It might be me drawing connections where there aren't any, but the other soldier in the trailer, the one who gets fucked up by the snakeman, he looked like he was directing the flying drone. It followed closer to him and he gave a little hand gesture to signal it forwards.

EDIT: Bah, ninja'd.

So, further speculation: that snakeman totally has breasts.  Or like, REALLY defined pectoral muscles.

sigh.  facepalm.  slowmo headshake.

The snakeman has snakeboobs.  There is no excuse for this, alien biology be damned.

For once it might be justified, since it could be a human-alien hybrid.

Hmm. Wild speculation time.

What if it is, canonically, an alternate time line? They made a point that the volunteer survives the Temple Ship. What if the Volunteer ends up showing up sometime during XCOM-2 to help out this universe where the aliens won? Maybe kickstart X-Com's psionic potential up a notch?

That...could be really cool, if done right.
That... would actually be hella neat.
I wonder, since it was user-selected, how they'd make a specific volunteer canon, if it'd just be an all-obscuring armor or the like, or if it'd just be something generated.
...
I wonder if that has to do with the introduction of guaranteed canon psychics from Progeny, Annette and the Furies, but especially the former.  Otherwise, there's always save-game imports, but...

Class speculation: Assault, Heavy, Support, Sniper, Ranger.  Drone might be tied to a human controller on the battlefield, given that it appears on the (human) class group shot, or a SHIV-type combatant like I originally speculated.

Finally, I actually assumed that those were well-defined pecs or armor.  Terrestrial snake bodies aren't exactly designed for upper limbs, after all, and it appears to be largely snakelike except for those arms.  It could have been added on after.

((So many replies in the warning notification...also, edited some clarification into the above.))
