Mechtoids, maybe. Though they could count as robotic.

Sectoid Commanders, if they're returning. They're different enough to count.

Didn't one of the demos show enemy MECs? I think those count for the Mechtoid.

Mechtoids had standard Sectoids in them anyway.

Part of me feels like the writing for Archons are kind of lazy...

Couldn't they be alien human hybrids that use floater technology? Instead of the aliens developing super DUPER technology?

The aliens? Having advanced technology?
What is this madness?

That said, they really aren't that advanced past the other stuff we know they can do? They just look a lot more fancy, because the aliens have given more effort into making them look fancy. Rather than disposable support troops.

Well, they are probably *are* Muton-human hybrids...  All the other aliens have seemingly been hybridized with humans, except the Ethereals and maybe the Chryssalids.

I didn't see "aliens got great technology", I saw "Aliens impersonating our gods/ancients to win at psychological war".

Is it really super DUPER technology, or is it mostly a repurposing of existing technology to "pretty it up" for PR use?  Even that area effect attack, fancy as it is, feels a bit like they again repurposed existing technology, specifically the Sectopod's Cluster Bomb.  The melee attack also comes from the organic Muton base, or so it seems.  Other than the pretty ceramic-type shell, there isn't all that much that's actually a tremendous technological leap forward from their known capabilities.

Part of it, I think, is that any actual alien-human hybrids are actually going to be powerful enough to be end-game material, once the aliens go from "oh heavens no!" to "concentrate fire and wipe them out" or even "the great xeno turkey shoot."  Full-on hybrids, almost certainly with powerful psionics, will be the powerful enemies that come out later, like the...umm, were Ethereals shown all that much in the pre-release footage for XCOM: EU?

I dunno they definitely are far superior to the first wave.

SOME of it makes perfect sense. The Thinmen are a lot more powerful in their natural form then their butchered human-guise form.

Others makes me honestly wonder if hundreds of years have passed but then I check and no... people who were alive in the first war, are alive for the second.

The only other explanation is that the ship really was a rinky dink and barely functional... and these new guys are what the aliens could do with a lot of time and resources.

Yea, nothing implies that the tech used to make archons is somehow more advanced than what the aliens already had. I mean, they're already masters of gene engineering and bionics. Turning a floater into an archon wouldn't take much effort for them, since they're basically the same thing, only with different weapons and appearance. Adding human DNA into the mix wouldn't take much effort, given their capabilities, which were already explicit in the first game.

They conquered Earth: the aliens literally have an entire planet's worth of resources available to them over a few decades; I haven't seen anything implausible considering that.

The aliens this time around are being described like minibosses, they definitely got a power boost.  It's all the amazing human DNA they scooped up and infused themselves with.

The Lord High Ethereal Guy basically said that humanity was amazing.  They abducted a bunch of us and started spreading Meld, genetic-mod goo, everywhere.  These geneboosted aliens in XCOM 2 are the natural result of their experiments on humanity.

Of course, it doesn't help that they have seemingly infinite energy sources, and the manpower of most of the planet under their thumb-analogues.  Plenty of industrial power, in other words.
