Add another thing I never knew about dwarf fortress to my non-existent list.

Would you like to play a game of Mafia? The subforum is always open to new players.

It must've been recently, because my 40.12 fort has 186 cave crocs waddling around.

There's a cap? I've had in excess of 200 turkeys, and they kept going. Never heard of a cap.

A softcap, It's supposed to be 50. It was only added a few versions ago (or maybe this version, it's been a while) IIRC.

The cap has existed forever.  I remember it in 40d (that is, 0.28.xx).

The key term is soft cap.  When you go beyond 50, it stops further pregnancies, but not pregnancies that have already started.  This means that exceptionally fecund animals like cave crocs can easily lay 70 eggs before the last batch has hatched, resulting in 3 or so females with fertile eggs to have 210 or so children before that cap kicks in and prevents any further eggs from being fertile.
