"Darn. I still have a couple of ideas, maybe we'll have enough time to try before the next tournament. Wait...time. Gene, when exactly did this happen? The original possession, I mean."

Give my transformed clone a Spell Ability to cast an AOE random mind swap in a 2m radius around the caster. Move the transformed clone within range of the woman and see if that spell can bypass the "direct effect" thing. If that doesn't work, get rid of Possession and my Spell Ability. Give my transformed clone another Spell Ability of an AOE spell to separate soul from body with 2m radius. Like, Astral Projection separation where the soul can go back into the orginal body or another. Have my transformed clone try it on the woman. If it doesn't work on the book, see if my transformed clone can pull her soul out of the body and put it in the transformed body while taking her place. And if none of that works, give myself Exorcist and see if that gives me any knowledge on possible courses of action.

Gene sits quietly resting his head on wall. His facade of confident and strong game host crumbles completely for first time letting the tired man behind it show. "Five months ago. Almost a half year now. Young foolish couple playing with powers beyond their comprehension for fun."

After giving yourself the Spell Ability you move on other side of the room so only Sophia is within range. You activate the power and nothing happens. No minds to swap with as far as the power is concerned. Moving on to the next attempt, the AOE Astral Projection. Only soul you manage to separate is yours and while it is interesting experience to see world(s) like this, it doesn't solve the problem. In your incorporeal state you see how your own bodies fall on to floor. You figure it's because your soul is not in to manage them. Pulling Sophia's soul out is even more difficult because in your current state you don't even see her. She doesn't exist. You do see all the tubes, cables and sensors attached to where her body is supposed to be, but she's not there herself nor is the book. Disappointed you return into your bodies and sit up.

Granting Exorcist to yourself gives you wide knowledge of how to expel, banish, substitute and ward various ghosts, demons, gods and extradimensional aliens, but nothing that exactly matches on this thing before you. Now to think about it you don't exactly know what the Metamorphica is. It clearly is corporeal at least considering how a machine can interact with it. Extra-planar? Extra-dimensional? Magical parasite?

"Like I said, nothing that comes from the book won't work directly. You gotta take very indirect ways, from completely outside, like is case with my remote accessor." Jeremy says pointing the page flipper thingy with his coffee cup. "First attempts didn't work at all, because I made them directly with powers granted to me. Only after I drew designs and programming on paper, got rid of all powers and rebuilt it using 'natural' methods and materials it worked."

Monster Mash Tournament III Begins

As the theme song nears its end Gene steps to the stage dressed in all white suit.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Dear players and audience! Welcome to the third Monster Mash Tournament! I'm Gene White and I'm your host tonight!

This time we have made large number of changes on how the games will progress, more than ever before! No reason to worry, though, the idea is still same; defeat your opponents and take their power. So lets talk about these changes first!

First of all, we have moved away from one-on-one fights! That's right! This isn't a tournament anymore, but a battle royale! Free for all, anything goes, no holds barred, brutal beatdown where situation can change rapidly from favouring one contestant to another!

Second change is that players have now more freedom to pick their cards! We have number of card categories, more specific and powerful ones costing more! Yes, you heard right! Cards cost nominal amount of points. Each player starts with 100 points and you can spend those points right away or during the match!

And you can earn those points too in middle of match! First player to hurt another receives 20 points! First player to defeat opponent receives 50 points! Kill stealing counts, so feel free to play dirty! Killer receives all cards victim had and can sell them back for half price, or use them for yourself! The last man alive receives 100 points, which can be used in later tournaments! Oh, and little something to keep in mind if you want to change cards in middle of match: any card that changes your body renders you unable to fight back momentarily! So be careful in there!

We didn't forget audience either! Our betting system is vastly improved for this round! You can bet your points on who draws first blood! Or who is first to gain a kill! Who dies first! Who gets most kills! And lastly and most importantly, who is the last man standing! Of course, we employ timelimit for each of these betting categories. First blood can not be bet on after any of contestants meet in virtual arena. To help you make educated bet, we let you know what cards each combatant drew! First kill and first death can not be bet on after first blood is gained. Most kills and match winner can not be bet on after half of combatants are dead! So get your credit card ready, because virtual blood flows tonight!

And combatants, pay attention. You want to know this:"

Cards and prices

Price  Card
5  Joker - Any card from The Metamorphica, Special ones at bottom of this list excluced.

   20    Aquatic Animals
   20    Amphibians and Reptiles
20    Birds - No large variants
50    Fantastic Animals - These often come with their own special cards
90    Fantastic People - These often come with their own special cards
   20    Mammals
10    Plants - Comes with mutation "Alternate Locomotion"
10    Other Animals - Insects and such. Only small variant exists, no discount.
    5  Crossbreed

   20    Physical Mutation
   30      Physical Non-detrimental Mutation
   50      Physical Beneficial Mutation
   20    Mental Mutation
   30      Mental Non-detrimental Mutation
   50      Mental Beneficial Mutation
   60    Supernatural or Psychic Powers
75      Active Supernatural or Psychic Powers
75      Passive Supernatural or Psychic Powers
   30  Special: Upgrade mutation

About mutations: "Detrimental mutation" is something that would hinder a creature in life. It's not necessarily bad for combat, but often is. "Neutral mutation" usually is not hindrance or boost to any animal with it, but in some rare situations may be either. "Beneficial mutation" is something that creature would benefit from in lifetime. Not necessarily useful in combat, but changes are high it is.
"Active" superpower is something that you have to actively mention to use, such as "Magnetic Control" Beirus loves to use. Since mutations and powers often have random components it is possible that active mutation is not actually under your control. "Passive" powers are primarily something that are always in effect, for example "Metal Skin" and "Superhuman Toughness". There are few you may be able to control, thanks to randomization, but those are few and far between.
We have one Special card: Upgrade mutation. These were granted in previous tournaments as a prize for correct bets winners. If you received one and didn't use it yet, they are still useable in this match. With this card you an upgrade or change single randomized property of a mutation or power, such as range of power, trigger condition, or other limitation. Not all mutations have randomized properties, though. I think those properties are somewhat clearly marked, but if you are unsure, don't hesitate to ask.

As usual you can give me a number of card you want, any number between 0 and 2,147,483,647. Same number for same card type results always same card (unless I change my tables). However Mammal and Small Mammal do not give same card with same number because they are effectively different types.

If you do not feel like picking cards by yourself, you can go with default deck which is three Creatures (30 points), three Crossbreeds (15 points), one Joker (5 points) and five Mutations (50 points), 100 points total.

Limits
  • You can have only one physical creature on the field. Certain mutations grant multiple bodies, but those are the only exception.
  • You are limited to six (6) mutations/powers for your creature.
  • Each crossbreed you apply on your creature increases the mutation/power limit by one (1). Crossbreed cards do not count against the limit.
  • HARDCORE: You can bypass the limit by taking random detrimental mutation bundled with the card.
  • Card switching is out. You can return cards you don't like for half price and buy new ones.
.

Beirus, we can assume that your trip to point of origin and whatever happens there happens before this tournament.

Another fun tidbit for everyone: remember that "switch two cards for one joker you have to use"? That only one player used as far as I remember? It had much higher changes to give you something good.

Sure you can, but I recommend saving 10 points in case you don't get a single creature.

Fantastic Animal(Large): 80 points. 2 Mutations: 20 points.

If I'm a competitor and if I keep my previous cards: 1 Physical Beneficial Mutation, 1 Mental Beneficial Mutation. If I don't keep them - default random deck.

((Sorry for taking so long, Aoshima. Running out of ideas.))

Give myself Superhuman Intellect, then check through my Exorcist knowledge for ways to exorcize possessing forces, gods, and parasites. Oh, and ways to sever a force (possessor) from its conduit (posessed), just incase there are some methods in there to separate the book from Gene's wife into a separate entity. Write this stuff down somewhere.

Oh, and ways to sever a force (possessor) from its conduit (posessed), just incase there are some methods in there to separate the book from Gene's wife into a separate entity. ((No worries, these guys have been poking the problem for half year already without measurable success.))

Ah, superhuman intellect! You welcome the feeling as you mind kicks on overdrive, lifting you from floundering in swamps of mediocrity and up into state of superiour clarity. You wonder why Gene and Jeremy aren't using this power. This is so much better! So much faster! You chasten yourself, you have a problem to solve!

Allright, let's see what you have learned. Gene, Jeremy and the other guy, Donovan, have tried basically only two approach. First destruction of the book, and secondly banishing it. Both proven ineffective. The book seems actively resisting of damage by hurting its host, which indicates basic defensive systems. Not necessarily intellect, though it is possible. Either it understands empathy, or its makers undestood it. Chances it being naturally evolved is near zero, though not exactly zero. Also apparently it damages its host if it isn't used often enough. This indicates parasitic nature, but why does host return to normal health after book is used? Not enough data to calculate response.

Perusing Exorcist knowledge reveals few ways of banishing possessors these guys have not tried. One: let the host die. While it is obvious Gene won't permit this, it certainly will cause possessor to move on. Limited resurrection is possible with current technology. You could devise way to let the host die and then perform medical science upon her until life is returned, however you do not know how the book hurts the host exactly. Approaching with this plan requires far more detailed knowledge than you currently have. Another interesting option here is giving one person powers to perform full resurrection, but you do not know whether powers are retained after possessor is removed. Books you have read indicates roughly 50% chance for retaining powers. It's a gamble you are not happy to take. More information is required.

Another way is to make the possessor think the host is dead. However cheating a book that is physically connected with it's host will not be easy. Extensive medical knowledge required for this approach. It may backfire, however. You think it may cause host's death for real depending on how possessor leaves. Too many unknown variables.

Third way they have not tried is substituting the host with someone else. Encouraging the possessor to move onto another host. It is almost what you tried earlier, but not exactly. Jeremy said he hadn't thought of that approach, which no research made on subject. There are lengthy rituals involved, possibly requiring continuous process of several days if this book is anywhere as powerfull as you think it is. And you do not know if these rituals are effective without power of Exorcist. You give it roughly 83.33454 % probability of success considering how some rituals are similar to the ones you have learned from outside sources. Performing a ritual lasting days is going to be very rough. Remaining 16,66546 % is probability of possessor killing its host while transferring into another.

Too many things you do not know. Too many secrets. Where did the book come from? Who made it? For what purpose? Why no knowledge of such book doesn't exist in history of mankind despite how almost all known mutations and superpowers are listed in it? How did it possess Sophia in first place? You remember one interesting mutation listed in it:
Book: Part or all of this mutant is shaped like, or attached to, a book.
Extent of bookish-ness: A part of this mutant's body is in the shape of a book. A part of this mutant's body is in the shape of a book. This mutant is fused with, or permanently attached to, a book. This mutant is fused with, or permanently attached to, a book. This mutant is fused with, or permanently attached to, a book. This mutant's whole body is a book.

Is this related? Self-reference? Then Possession is too. And Susceptible to Possession. You getting side tracked here. You need more information. They have information. At least something they have not told yet.

So, only three players for this round? I was hoping for more than double that. With three players we can't really have any progression of power.
