The group was bound and taken away by local guards. They expected to be sentenced there in the city, but instead found themselves being transported via magic over the next couple of days until they found themselves in the magical city of Cleper. Upon arrival, they were separated from each other and stuck in individual jail cells, far from each other. There they sat, day after day, until a month had passed since their failed robbery. As the sun was setting, they were roughly pulled out of their cells, and marched towards the great hall of the ruling council of Cleper. As they neared, they noticed that not all of them were present. Apollo was gone and they found out that he had been conscripted into being one of the local healers of the city. Dar on the other hand... Their leader was missing and none of the guards would answer their questions as to where he was.

As they waited outside the doors of the hall, they could hear arguments from within.

"This is unwise! We do not need a band of thieves here. We do not need to be doing this at all! It is madness!"

"You have heard the rumors as much as I have! We cannot risk letting this go any further. We must step up and do our duty."

"We must do this, yes, but we should be smart about it. That's why you brought the three you did, Simon. Though... I see only two of them present here. Where is your third?"

Suddenly the group notices a thin, small half-elf girl standing nearby. She stares blankly at the thieves, before sneering slightly and pushing the doors open.

"You realize they can hear every single word you say, right? Still, I have to agree with Simon. I have no interest in dealing with these idiots. If this needs to be done, let it be with people we can trust."

Alaria joins the party! Keyleth and Korhal are in!

A helmeted woman did her best to remain unobtrusive.

The heavy mercenary simply stood, nearly limp as he breathed slowly, unresponsive to much else. From a typical vantage, it would be tough to tell if he was even awake.

Taft held a fist up to the half-elf girl, then extended one of the fingers and the thumb.

"Piss off, blondie."

"Why don't you geezers tell us why we're here, hey?"

Julia glared right back at the half-elf, raising her fists.

"You wanna go elfy!?"

"And where's our boss?" Julia chimed in after Taft.

Kaltsar chose to say nothing. Antagonizing the others here would do them no good.

Edgar just stood and stretched.

: If they insist on us hearing everything, let's listen to what they have to say.

"Alaria, please! You know why we have brought them in. This cannot be something that we officially sanction. You are the closest to an official envoy as we can send."

The half-elf frowned at Taft and Julia before turning back to Simon.

"Fine. But know that I am not happy about this."

Simon nodded at her and turned back to the thief band.

"Very well. It's time to answer your questions. Why you are here... Despite your attempts to steal from a high noble of Tairani, you will be left alive. Pardoned even! Assuming you can help us. We have... a proposition. There is a magical artifact... One of great power. Perhaps you have heard rumors of the Fire Emblem? It was thought to be lost after the war so many years ago. However... recent rumors are troubling..."

"Indeed! There have been rumors of Oldrdyn having discovered the Fire Emblem and working to learn how to harness its power. If this were to come to pass... Well, we suspect that they are the origin of these so called bandit attacks. If they were to control the Fire Emblem, it would turn from occasional attacks into all out war. A war that we would likely lose. That the world would lose. We do not need another Severing of the world."

"The other members of the council are attempting to find support from the other countries, but we have decided that we must act now. We would like to use your... talents to sneak into Oldrdyn and steal the Fire Emblem. From there, you will return it to us, where we will destroy it. While its power is great, it is too much for any one human or even country to control. We cannot risk having it stolen like we are asking you to do. As for your leader... Well, let us just say that he is insurance. None of you can use the Fire Emblem, but we would like to ensure that you return it to us. We are saving you from life long imprisonment or death, but we also are aware that we cannot fully trust you. Therefore, if you care about your leader at all... Which I know many of you do as he has helped save many of your lives before this... Well, perhaps you should return to us when you have done what we ask."

Kaldach silently snickered as he heard the council member's last 'threat'.
: "Yeah, yeah sure. More importantly, what's this about Oldrdyn being behind the latest bandit attacks? You got a lead? A reason to suspect them? Or are you just sendin' out some two-bit thieves out to shake down a bunch of nobles and see what falls out?"

: Why would they send a bunch of thieves that got caught on a sneaking mission? Wouldn't it make more sense to hire thieves that managed to get away? Humans are so illogical...

Keyleth very carefully did not say any of this out loud.

Julia did something rare for her, excluding when Dar gave orders, she shut up and listened to what the old bags of bones had to say; ignoring the frown the dumb half-elf sent her. She didn't really care about the emblem, or about their concerns and fears at all; not a single bit. But what she cared about was the boss and his status. She grit her teeth and clenched her hands into fists to avoid doing something truly stupid, barely restraining herself until the last old coot had finished. When she spoke she had lost her earlier bravado but was far from subdued, masking her feelings in confidence.

"Ya just want us to get the emblem and then we and the boss're off scot free? Seems easy enough."

She hated herself for dancing to the tune of these posh fiddlers but there was little choice left for the young dwelf other than death.
