Edgar shrugged and put his new weapon aside.

: Alright then. Armor works good enough.

: So, if we take the merchant guise we could use our own spare weapons as fake stock. We'd look less threatening at a first glance while still having them ready for the worst.

Kaltsar chuckled. "He's always a bit of a grouch. But right now I think he's just a bit on edge."

If Taft had heard her say 'short'-tempered he would have been mad at the implied insult of his height. But he didn't, and so he responded to Shilleka instead.

"We oughtta put one of those ball-and-chain deals on your ankle then. Keep you from floating off into the clouds."

The journey through the mountains started out easy enough. The villagers had mentioned that the paths through the mountains were fairly clear and had been a good source of smuggling through the years. The travelers had slowed some this past year, but that was apparently due to issues within Oldrdyn as opposed to anything in the mountains. However...

Oldrdyn Army Mountain Outpost

"Oi, did you check on the prisoner?"

"Yeah, she's a feisty one, huh? You'd think she woulda just joined up with us, but no. She's still asking for her tome back, but I'm not that stupid."

"Haha yeah, seriously. Wait, hold up. You! What's that group coming up? Are they armed?"

As the wagon approached what seemed to be an army outpost, it was quickly faced with a line of uniformed men. They don't attack, but are clearly looking for an explanation.

Julia was quick to answer.

"We're just a merchant and her bodyguards passing through; don't mind us."

"Merchants don't come through here. They go through the official checkpoint. Smugglers go through here. You guys smugglers?"

Julia managed to keep her poker face.

Well shit. Way to go whoever thought this was a good idea."Like I said, we're hired bodyguards. I'm just telling you what she told us when she hired us, take it up with her if you think she's a smuggler."

Why in the HELL did I let her talk me into this...

"Haven't you heard? There are BANDITS on the main roads! Why, a village not far from here was attacked just yesterday!"

Taft clutched his shawl closer to his body, as if shivering from fright.

"I was told the mountains are a safer path. You men haven't allowed any... ruffians through, have you?"

"Wait, bandits? Wait, I thought she called you a lady, I mean... What... what is going on here? What sort of things are you bringing through here?"

The sergeant was very clearly confused.

Julia struggled to keep a straight face; she had forgotten Taft had been chosen to be the merchant. It took a few seconds where it looked like she was glaring a hole through one of the guards before she could speak without her voice cracking.

"Don't... don't question it. That's what she told us to call h-her."

Taft sniffed, glaring at Julia.

"There ARE such things as dwarven women, despite the stupid rumors you humans have of us. Springing out of holes in the earth. Hmph."

He turned slightly and gestured at the wagon.

"Mostly clothes and trade goods of the sort. Nothing valuable on its own, but it's all I have and losing it will ruin me."

Why, why WHY did they agree to let the dwarf pose as a merchant? A FEMALE merchant at that?! They could have used Alaria for the role like originally planned, but noooo. Keyleth privately wondered if the non-elf world had suffered some horrific disease that had ruined their mental faculties. Hopefully she wouldn't catch it.

Kaltsar just tried to look the part of a stern faced guard. Thankfully, it was a role he was fairly well suited toward. All they had to do was get through here unmolested.

Frowning, the sergeant walked around towards the back of the wagon. Lifting a few things with his spear, he leaned in.

"I'm going to need to take a closer look at some of this stuff..."

"Go ahead, have a look if you must."

Taft really, really hoped he picked one of the barrels that was just trade goods. If he picked one that had somebody in it, well, then Taft hoped they greeted him with a weapon to the face so they could at least get the drop on the guards.
