Kaltsar sighed. These people. "The goal is to keep me alive and standing. Which includes an active defense, not standing around waiting for Edgar to find a spear heavy enough to drive through my armor. And it looks like this armor is going to go a ways toward that, so, money and time well spent."

Shilleka reached out and rapped a knuckle on his head.

"Shouldn' yer be wearin' one of dem buckit t'ings, den? So yer brain don't end up all odder der floor."

Kaltsar brushed Shilleka's hand away. "Believe me, it's on my priority list. But all those bandits had freakishly tiny heads or something, none of 'em fit."

= "Should be like me an' wear a skull 'nstead. Dere better, anyways."

"Just get a chainmail headpiece. It'll protect a little against swords and axes, at least. Better than nothing if you're planning on actually taking hits instead of avoiding them."

As they were talking, Alaria drove up in a wagon with various barrels and crates on it. If one inspected them, it would quickly become obvious that most of them were empty, but she had plans to fix that. Standing up and stretching, she stepped down.

"If any of you have any spare equipment or clothing or such, we will fill the boxes and barrels with them. The ones on top are full, but we still want the others to seem full at least. We'll be leaving in a few hours for the mountain path through to the capital of Oldrdyn. Any questions?"

[Sirus]

: "You should consider bonding with a wyvern. Several hundred pounds of angry flying dragon goes a long way towards 'active defense'. Oh, I don't have anything Alaria, sorry."

"Just what I got on me."

"Act'lly, I'll be right back."

"Maybe we could fill them with actual trade goods. It'd make our cover a bit tougher to see through, and we can always take some time to assess the area while we sell our goods."

"By the way, Alaria, could I have a word?"

Kaldach nearly bumps into Shilleka as he arrives back outside the inn.
: "Take it we're headed out soon, then. Good. I'm getting cold feet."

Alaria frowned slightly.

"The issue is acquiring those goods. The village is not exactly a thriving metropolis and we need to move quicker rather than slower. As for talking, of course. Here or in private? If private, lead the way."

Kaltsar shrugged and walked some distance away from the rest of the group. Once the two were out of earshot, he turned to her.

"...You touched a lot of nerves yesterday with the rest of the group. I think you'll find that you can get more mileage out of us if you work with us and keep at least a facade of equality."

Alaria shook her head and sighed.

"I already explained this to Taft. I was upset yesterday. Justifiably upset, but that's not the point. You were busy yesterday getting this... armor all set, but I discussed plans with multiple members of the group, which is how we came about with this plan. I appreciate your wanting to help me, but I do know what I am doing."

Kaltsar nodded. "Good to hear. Look, I didn't drag you over here to be your relationship counselor. I want to ask you a few things. First question- and answer me honestly- When we bring back the Emblem, what guarantee do I have that your masters don't kill us all outright?"
