Taft grinned to himself (it was possible his companions up to this point didn't know that he could genuinely smile, although it was probably tempered by the knowledge his happiness was due to him doing better than the others) and moved back to the second stone. He had said it before and luck willing he would say it again in a few more shots... anything an elf can do, a dwarf can do better.

Taft was still 2 for 2, which was better than his opponents, but he was irked they had almost hit the bullseye when he hadn't.

"...Nice shooting. But I'm going to do it better."

He led the group to the third stone and took up his stance...

And solidly hit on his first try

Taft immediately walked over to the nearest wall and started slamming his forehead against it.

Kaltsar approached Taft, stopping several feet behind the dwarf. "Are you going to be okay?"

Looking somewhat concerned about the structural integrity of Taft's forehead, Miki moved back to the fourth stone.

She toed the line, the tip of her tongue sticking out as she gauged the additional distance. To be honest, they'd been pretty evenly matched so far. Her horse could have probably shot better than some of the shots she'd made.

Aim, fire.

Taft slammed his head against the wall again, then turned and glared at Kaltsar. After a few moments he took a deep breath through his nose, visibly calming himself and closed his eyes.

"Only if the elf doesn't win. It's going to be bad, but I might be able to accept staking my pride and losing to a human. If Belenus wins, I'm going to murder Shilleka before she can say one single word, because I do not need her braying on about it like you know she will. Bad enough I'm the big loser here."

And with that, he turned and continued to bash his head against the wall.

And then both Miki and Belenus missed both of their next shots horribly.

Belenus chuckled, the smug grin on his face the kind that can only be born of proving once again that elves are just better. "Taft, don't abuse the poor stonework like that, you might crack it in two." He stepped forth and tried his hand at the next shot.

At the miss, he grimaced. "Once more?"

The two start alternating shots.

Finally Mika's arrow struck true. The first time she had done so, Belanus had followed with an equally skilled shot. This time however, his shot flew past the target and landed in the bale of hay behind it.

Taft wiped off his forehead and walked back over.

"Right... stakes are stakes and I'm a dwarf of my word. You're the winner, so what do you want?"

"I suppose it had to happen eventually. It seems that you've earned the reward for this one, Miki, much as it pains me that I didn't win myself."

[Gaterhyme]

With firm hands and surprising strength despite not being much taller than Taft, she began steering him towards Bomrek - or just anywhere else she could find medicine.

"Medicine first. Then maybe you can groom my horse sometime."

Kaltsar watched as Taft wiped some of the blood from his forehead and went to meet his competitors. At least I don't have to deal with Taft and Shilleka killing each other today.
