~MAP END~

As the final body fell, the king coughed and slowly sat up in his chair. He was an older man, clearly no longer quite in his prime, though he still appeared to be somewhat of a formidable opponent.

"So... You strangers come in and save my life from these assassins. Though still I must know. Why were you here in the first place? Answer my question and answer it well else I fear that it will turn out poorly for you. And do not think that I do not recognize you Julia Tarask. When you returned home, I was notified of course. It is interesting that on the night of your return, you and your... varied companions should save me from certain death. Now... I am listening. Though first, to show some of my gratitude...

He waved his hand at the priests behind him who quickly moved out and started to heal those who had been injured in the battle. Settling back in his chair, the king stared solemnly at the group, clearly waiting for someone to speak.

Alaria hesitated. Although this would have been her job had they approached during they day, the night approach had ruined what she planned on saying. Plus it would be useful for her to know how this group would approach it, and she rationalized that she could always speak up if damage control was needed.

After waiting a good thirty seconds, Taft rolled his eyes.

"We've been blackmailed into getting the Fire Emblem. We were just going to steal it and leave peacefully but since we saved your life and all, maybe you should just hand it over so we can be on our way."

Kaldach lifted his sword from the Spy's corpse and, on hearing Taft's blunter-than-a-sledgehammer-summation, heaved a heavy sigh and didn't even bother adding anything further. He sheathed the thin sword, leaving his arm in prime position to draw the Devil Sword quickly, if need be.

The king's expression flickered through surprise to what seemed to be anger or frustration, and then settled back into neutral. He paused and then calmly inquired,

"Do you mind if I ask who forced you into such a thing?"

At this point, Alaria sighed and stepped forward.

"Your majesty, some of us were hired, some of us were... recruited to pay off a debt by the Cleper council. They told us that you had been rumored to have the Emblem and that they believed in attempting to use it, you were causing a corruption that was resulting in increased bandit attacks and the like. While diplomacy was to be our first option, it seemed unlikely to work if you had the Emblem. So we did what we believed we must for the sake of the world."

The king gave Alaria a once over, pausing with his gaze on her ears for a split second before looking over the group as a whole again.

"Well. I find it interesting that you have been sent here. Specifically because the Council had already gotten in contact with me months ago about this. I sent a messenger back to them and when I heard no reply I assumed the matter settled. You see, it is simple. The Emblem has never been in my control. Were it mine to wield, that would be one thing with you breaking in and trying to steal what is mine. However, since this appears to be an issue of a lost messenger... and you did save my life...

He leaned back in his chair, clearly considering his options.

Taft looked at Kaldach.

"What? You have a good explanation for why we're skulking around a castle at night? At least the truth doesn't make us sound like a bunch of idiots making shit up."

He turned back to the king.

"Fine, maybe you're lying about having it, maybe you aren't. Either way, I think we're done here."

"Let's pick up our wounded, loot the assassins, and get going. The council's probably going to send us out somewhere else to look for the damn thing - it's what I'd do in their position - so the sooner we get on that, the better."
