Oh, don't worry about the elves.  I won't have any problems telling them to piss off when they tell me to keep to a timber quota.  Mister leader dwarf was only angry because some of his handiwork wound up in the hands of the kobolds, not because the elf carrying them away died.  I was quite happy to get rid of all of the 10* and 20* valued stone crafts.  Now I have to worry about picking them all up and trading them away.  Again. >_<

--------------------------------------------------

1st Malachite - Ingish made a millstone.  I'm not quite sure what possessed him to do so, but he's quite proud of it.  I have to admit, it's superbly crafted, but the way he's named it and cradles it in his arms has me a bit worried.  Still, it doesn't appear to be intefering with his duties.

7th Sandstone - The rest of summer passed on by without much incident.  I ordered the construction of the main dining hall earlier in the season and amazingly it's almost completed.

I think everybody threw their backs into it's completion so that they could start to think of this place as home and not some isolated little backwater.  A few more thrones for the main tables, some statues in the wall niches and some decorative engraving on the walls, and I think the place will be fit for a king.  Or at least a count.

I must commend Lòr, Sigun and Bomrek for taking it upon themselves to oversee the rock detailing of the fortress.  In addition to their mining prowess, they've become quite good with the more delicate processes involved in creating.

The dwarven caravan heeded my advice and approached from the east, avoiding all the difficulties involved with the kobold encampment.  I must've sounded desperate when I talked to the liason last year, as all the caravan had on them were two anvils, one iron and one steel, and a shield.  We're not hurting for foodstuffs or drink luckily, so I won't complain too loudly.  I put in a more sensible request with the mountainhome liaison this time around, so hopefully next year we should see a influx of better goods.

On a final note, one of my recently arrived immigrants, a woodworker named Bim Trenchguild, was possessed by a fey spirit and crafted a wooden crown he's calling Orbdawn.  Outstanding piece of craftdwarfship, in my humble opinion.

1st Moonstone - I ordered Doren Koltusung, captain of my small group of marksdwarves to start doing what they could to pick off the kobolds.  Under the cover of night, they snuck down to the cave entrance and sniped the creatures guarding it, managing to kill them all.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for the kobold menace.

On a lighter note, I've officially opened the doors to our feasthall.  My dwarves took no time in acquainting themselves with the offerings of such a room.

Additionally, the outer wall of the top level barracks is finally completed.  It's hard to believe that when we arrived, this was little more than a rocky mound on the edge of a cliff.

Before too long, it'll be converted into a fully realized and defensible gateway to the rest of our burgeoning fortress.

20th Moonstone - In what I can only assume was some kind of retaliation for our attack at the start of the month, two kobolds breached our defenses and managed to slaughter one of my woodworkers.

By Armok, they'll pay for this!

I've ordered the construction of a burial chamber in the mountain surrounding the mouth of the volcano.  Besmar èrithducim will not be forgotten.

Ah, I love these stories.  This one has a lot of potential with its location and presmise, too.  Glass-making doesn't seem too widely explored.   :)

A question - how did you manage to get the squares inside your smooth walls?  Like in the dining room and at the entrance to your fort?  That looks really good.

23rd Obsidian - We all came together and worked without rest to complete the tomb before Besmar's body could begin to decay.  Lòr and his miners swiftly carved out the room and smoothed it down as befits any hero slain in battle.  I worked through the night to craft a worked glass doorway, in the style I've seen the master glassmakers create back in the mountainhome.

It's the first time I've performed a funeral ceremony.  I don't think to did too bad of a job.

Rest well Besmar Laboredworked.

The walls are double wide rather than single wide.  It makes a heck of a difference in it's appearance!

Geeze...when things start happening, they don't *stop* happening...

---------------------------------------------

7th Granite - Dodók Mengisden, our resident animal caretaker, was so moved by the ceremony that he raced back into the fortress, grabbed some copper nuggets and began to work.  The end result of his two weeks worth of effort was a stunning copper crown.  Be it through divine inspiration or some other, more mundane, explanation, Dodók is now as capable with stonecrafting as the greatest of grand masters.

9th Granite - Those damn marksdwarves of mine snuck down to the kobold encampment to exact vengeance for the death of Besmar.  I can't fault them as they did a commendable job in taking out some more of the guards, but one of them caught a stray arrow to his left knee.  It now appears that he's going to be crippled for life.

16th Slate - Another mess of immigrants arrived today.  I must be doing something right in this place if dwarves are coming here willingly.

The marksdwarf who was escorting them brought me some disturbing news however.  Apparently the goblins are starting to attack the settlements to the north.  I can only hope that my secluded location presents itself as more of an obstacle to any goblinoid incursions.  Kobolds are one thing.  Goblins are something else entirely.

7th Felsite - I spent some time neglecting my administrative duties working in the glassworks.  It felt good to get away from the pressures of running this place.  I reached that state of serkisat I remembered my master teaching me about, where all the rest of world disappears and there's nothing left but yourself and the furnace.  When I emerged, I was surprised to find that I had crafted probably one of the finest glassware goblets I've ever made.  When the autumn caravan comes, I plan on personally giving it to the liaison so he can deliver it to my master.

12th Hematite - That fiend Chroglimbis sent three more of his thieves to infiltrate my fortess.  We didn't have much difficulty dispatching them, luckily.

14th Hematite - The human caraven arrived today, along with somebody calling themselves a merchant baron.  It sounds like he wants to work out some kind of trade agreement with my fortress.

Yup, 2 years.  I should probably start including the year in my dates every now and again, huh?

Ok folks, recommend to me a big construction project that I can focus in on creating!

------------------------------------------

7th Galena, 1053 - Datan, the marksdwarf who was wounded, finally gave up his last breath.  I've had to delay the proper internment of his body as it seems that an imp has taken to harassing the workers who approach the worksite.

21st Galena - A full two months after his arrival, Turot Melakel, the human merchant baron, finally departed for his homeland.  My every day administrative duties kept me busy.  Inevitably, when I had the time to actually sit and devote to him, he would be out running around the mountainside hunting game.  And, of course, on more than one occasion, we both found ourselves too tired from the day's activities to want to do much more than drink.  In the end though, I think he enjoyed his time here.  I didn't let him into the forges, lest he get any ideas about our capabilities.

On a different note, that damn imp is still causing us issues.  If it doesn't go away within the next week or so, I'll have to see about arranging an alternative permanent resting place for poor Datan.

Bah, Towers are for pansies.  Build a castle on top of the tower, and use it as your entire fort.

I was actually toying with the idea of building up an exterior tower/castle thingy reaching from the lowest level of the fort up to that entryway I have on the top.  It'd be...what? 9 z-levels high.  Then I could close off the other entrances and have the only means of access be from a drawbridge.

Sideview:

code:

======
MM  ==
MM _==
MMM ==
MMM ==
MMMM==
MMMMM=

Where M is the mountain, = is the building and _ is the bridge leading inside.  Basically my entire fort would become a big O, with the roads running through the middle of it.

17th Sandstone, 1053 - Though I know they were here for several weeks, it felt as though the dwarven caravans left quickly.  It's good to hear from the mountainhome, even if it's casual talk.

Tosid Udibemal was sent as our liaison this year.  The negotiating went without a hitch.  I've put in a request for as many cut gemstones as he can provide for me.   It would be nice to give our poor resident jeweler something to other than hauling stuff around or practicing his trade on the small globs of glass which are left after I'm done working.  Besides, it would be nice to start decorating this growing fortress.  Tosid didn't make any promises, but he said that he would do what he could.  Beyond that, I put in the usual requests for foodstuffs, wood and drink.

The passage of the leaving dwarves only served as a reminder of the coming winter.

Also, Datan has now properly been laid to rest.

The imp which had caused us so many problems seems to have scampered off for a more amusing locale.  Hopefully it's gone off to vex those bloody kobolds below.
