Yes, mages should be able to spend 2 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.
Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.
Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1, but doing this provokes a Luck roll: on a roll of 2 or less, the spell loses one Awk.
No, this is a very bad idea.
No, this is a somewhat bad idea, I have my own ideas. (Post in thread).

((Is there even alcohol? Thought it was an empty disc.))

Get up in his face, then acid breath. Like, melee range up in his face. If that's too close for breath, bite him. Or claw him. Physically maim him in some way. If he's near the booze, chug booze afterwards.

Hit him with mah LAZOR frost breath. Then get to the booze!
((You're fighting in the same arena. There's a crate, the top cut off, full of booze bottles.))

Turn Three: Flames in the Spotlight

INIT
Azer(5+2=7)
Drake(1-1=0)
That's pretty definitive. Azer has time to mock Drake thoroughly before running up to the center crate and grabbing a booze bottle.

(2vs.1-1=0)
Azer lobs the bottle at Drake, weakly. It would have missed if Drake hadn't dodged into it. (booze-soaked)

Zap(5+2=7)
Awk(1+1-1=0)
Luck(4) A fireball the size of a baby elephant erupts from Azer's hands... somewhat roasting them in the process(2-1=1 T and 5 W) Nah. (crit fail: 1) Azer's hands fall off. It hurts. Never mind pain, though.

The fireball flies towards Drake at high speed. (6vs.3-1=2) And it hits. (1+2(alcohol)+1(high power)=4vs.3+1=4) That could have gone a lot worse for Drake. He's still on fire though. (on fire)

(Willpower: 2) Even though Drake's a dragon at the moment, concentrating through being on fire is pain. RAGELUCK(5) Dragon rage, dragon assault Azer.

The green dragon formerly known as Drake, now known as Interminatis Ira proceeds to leap through the air, targeting Azer for a melee claw smash. (6vs.6+2=8) Interminatis Ira lands quite near Azer. Just not near enough. Then there's a flash of light and Interminatis Ira returns to human form. Drake is a tad bit irritated, being soaked in alcohol and on fire aaghhh...

Random Event(3) Thank goodness.

Hug him. Hug him and don't let go until the fire spreads. Pin his arms so he can't gesture. Cover his mouth.

((Did you change physical stats to where a 1 in the stat is 0, 2 is +1, etc? You should probably put that in the OP so people are aware of it.))

Lightning bolt Drake. I want to see that fire becoming proper plasma.

The point of keeping the golems on fire isn't for the value of fire as a weapon. It's more to keep the golems functioning at a reasonable speed.
It was never a promise. It was a dirty lie, and you all knew that. You should all know by now that you can't trust a word I say.

Turn Nine: Mundanity Beats Insanity

Avery(6+1=7)
Person(2+1=3)
Weremouse(3)
TIE:
Person(1+1=2)
Weremouse(2)
TIE++:
Person(5+1=6)
Weremouse(4 thank goodness)

Avery grabs the weremouse, then attempts to throw it at Person. (5-1=4) Difficult but doable. (1-1(difficult)=0vs.4+1=5) The weremouse goes into a frenzy. Luck(4) which Avery avoids. Mostly. (armscrapes, left arm)
Bottle chugged. Rainboom ho.

Zap(3+3-1=5)
Awk(6)
Luck(1)
A blast of radioactive droplets expand from Avery's hands. (5), surprisingly not effecting him.
Person Luck(6) Person weaves around the near undodgeable droplets easily.
Weremouse Luck(4) The weremouse suffers. (4) Agh, flesh burns flesh burns.

Then Person fires the laser beam.
Zap(6+2=8)
Awk(2)
Luck(3)
Person's invocations call forth a truly massive laser beam. Unfortunately, although it targets Avery, it started from right behind Person. dodge(1 oh crud) Person didn't even realize it hit him. (2+1(bad dodge)+2(ultimate power)=5vs.3) Thankfully the laser only cut off a large portion of Person's torso instead of cutting right through the middle. Wait. AGHHH!!! (agh, gah, argh... healing aura against the massive wound: 4vs.2) Thankfully Person's healing aura sealed the wound. Leaving him with massive pain. (-1 to all physical rolls, roll will(4 or higher) to act each turn until it heals somehow. Alcohol can dull the pain.)

Avery notices the laser beam. (1+1(large size)vs.1+1(dodge)) (hit: (even hit, odd miss): 2) Avery is nicked by a giant laser beam. (2+2(massive)-1(nick)=3vs.1) Avery Luck(5) Avery is now pretty much robeless. But otherwise okay.

The weremouse takes another swipe at Avery! (6vs.2+1=3) (4vs.1) Really? (avery luck: 6) That could have gone worse. AGH. (double gutscrapes, now -1 to all dodge rolls, -1 to tougha rolls involving the gut area)

Random Event(1) Thump. Thump. It's almost as though there's a forgotten beast right outside the door.

Spoiler: Avery (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Person (click to show/hide)

Turn Four: Crispy Tinglies

INIT
Azer(4+2=6)
Drake(1+2=3)

Drake tougha(2-1=1) Crispy, crispy, crispy drake! (will: 6) Despite the heavy burning he received(-1 to dodge due to pain and inflexibility), Drake manages to plot his actions.

Then Azer sends a lightning bolt at him.
Zap(3+2=5)
Awk(4+1=5)
A well shaped and potent lightning bolt erupts from Azer's hand stumps and flies at Drake.

(5+1=6vs.1+2-1=2) (1+1(potent)vs.2-1=1) Drake receives tinglies. (-1 to Awk, next two turns)

(1+2vs.1+2) Then Azer receives a hug from Drake. Azer Luck(3) (4-1=3) Well that must hurt. (moderate burning.)

Random Event(6) On the other side of the arena, a chest thunks to the floor. It seems to be full of potions. (6+6=12) potions. 5, potion of major healing, 4, potion of healing, 1, potion of surging pain, 5, potion of heat resistance, 4, potion of potency(+1), 1, potion of gender inversion, 1, potion of self explosion, 4, potion of resilience(+1 to tougha), 5, potion of speed(+2 to dodging, +1 to init), 3, potion of acid spit, 2, potion of confusion, 4, potion of blunt force resistance.

It's still on the other side of the arena.

((You might want to start using Zap as damage roll for magic, otherwise any offensive magic gets rather bad. You need to pass Zap, Awk, aiming vs doging and additional roll vs will/tough. That's six rolls that need to be favorable for magic to do anything.))
Kick Drake in one of his knees and run towards potions. Smash Major healing potion over hand stumps.

Don't run from my affection! Keep hugging! Maybe headbutt him. Or, if he breaks my hug, get to the potions and use a healing potion on myself. Grab some booze on the way to the potions.

((Zap as damage roll? I can't believe I didn't think of it before.))

Turn Five: Lootfest

INIT
Azer(6+2=8)
Drake(3+2=5)

(6) Drake ignores the burning flames, receiving no additional injuries!

Azer takes the initiative once again! (5vs.3+2-1=4) (1-1=0vs.2-1=1) Kneekick applied, no effect.
(3+2=5) Azer promptly dashes around the crate, running to the potion chest. He then grabs a Major Healing potion with his teeth, and smashes it over his stumps. Luck(5) The potion flows, and the hands regrow.

Drake isn't far behind, grabbing a booze bottle and running for the potions. (4+2=6) Drake arrives at the potion chest, grabbing a healing potion(minor) and chugging it. Potion(4) Healing flows through him! (burns partially healed)

Random Event(4) Nope.
