Yes, mages should be able to spend 2 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.

I guess I'd run forward and use my momentum to gain an advantage to pushing my opponent to the ground.

"Ladies(oh wait they're all male) and gentlemen! Xenos and elves! Welcome to the First Wizard's Tourney! Excuse me."

the host taps some buttons on a wristwatch that wasn't there before. Person and Avery blink, feeling as if they were punched in the chest. When the blink is finished, they find themselves in a dining hall sized for shorter beings, but still able to stand somewhat. They are on the opposite sides of the long table. Mugs full of alcohol rest on the table, as well as several plates of tallow roasts. There is a door on one side of the room(not immediately behind the players.) Ahem.

Excuse me... I need to do some prep work.

Now then.

Turn One: And They're Off(and mostly unharmed)

INIT:
Avery(2+1=3)
Person(3+1=4)

Person gestures immediately, expelling a wave of energy from his hands, letting it envelop him.

Zap(4+1=5)
Awk(4+1=5)
It goes down rather well. (regeneration from moderate wounds or less, 2 turns.)

Avery goes for a more offensive approach, strafing left to avoid being hit by... nothing. Magic is cast.

Zap(2)
Awk(5+3=8)

A marble of odd energy is lobbed towards Person. (Person Luck: 1) Person doesn't bother dodging, thinking it wouldn't have an effect. He was mostly right. (common cold, 4 turns. -1 to Awk.)

Do you use TWoOtA arena in rolls?
Wot would that be?

Random Event(1) A fine misting of dust drips down from the rock ceiling, onto the food and drink. The dust is purple.

(Oh, it wasn't actually started yet, right.)

Grab a mug of alcohol for later use, and jump away from the table. If I can still cast spells, steal some mana from avery.

(If I end up using energy blade, I'm actually kind of expecting to lose my hand from trying to grab something made of pure energy. Ah well. Maybe I'm not exactly holding it so much as projecting it? We shall see.)

Turn Two: Read the Random Events

INIT
Avery(4+1=5)
Person(4+1=5!)
TIE_BREAKER_INIT
Avery(6+1=7)
Person(5+1=6)

Avery is the first to act. He jumps upon the table, then grabs a mug and chugs it. "Time stops. The host comes into the room through a portal. The host says 'how hard could it have been to notice the purple dust?' Good luck. The host leaves the room through a portal."

Avery Luck(1 oh dear.) (critluck: 2 oh double dear.)

Avery collapses. The forgotten beast dust has taken its toll. (tougha: 6, will: 4) His incredibly powerful body(not really) nearly neutralizes the effects. But still, brain fuzz. (roll will(5 or higher) to use magic, next 2 turns.) Avery stands, wavy on his feet, but ready to fight. Sort of. (-2 to dodge for this turn, but not relevant.)

Person grins. A mug of alcohol is grabbed, and Person leaps towards the door. He turns towards Avery and attempts to steal some mana from him.

Zap(2+1=3)
Awk(5+1-1=5)

A weak but well focused attack on Avery drains some of his mana. (1d6-1: 3-1=2) Avery loses two mana. (give it to Person: 5+1=6) Person successfully appropriates the two mana.

Random Event(2) Nothing happens.

Avery grabs a cup and runs at person, when he gets there he will attempt to force person to drink it.

Turn Three: Big Attacks, Big Failures

INIT
Avery(1+1=2)
Person(3+1=4)

Person gestures, spiralling his hand in an odd manner.
Zap(4+1=5)
Awk(6+1-1=6)

A flash of light, a burst of color. Technically Avery shouldn't be able to dodge(the beam's moving at the speed of light) but let's say that Person could miss the shot.
(2vs.6) (glancing blow: 5) The laser nicks Avery on the shoulder. (2+1-2=1vs.3) A small bit of robe is sheared off. Avery is unfazed.

Avery grabs a mug and attempts to forcedrink it to Person! (quicka: 1+1=2 vs. 4+1=5) Person is much faster than Avery however, dancing around Avery's grabs.

Random Event(5) Nope.
