Yes, mages should be able to spend 2 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.
Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.

Sample Turn Fifteen: Beatdown

Now how do I do this... right.
INIT:
Golemdrake(6-1=5 really?)
Mage(3-1=2)
Ecco(5+1=6)
Cain(5-1=4)
Oric(4)
SWAT(3-3=0)

Ecco(missiles) fires a missile salvo. Target: Cain. (2) The mech has other plans. (4) Oric is the target today.
(6+2=8vs.3) (4+3=7vs.4+4=8) Oric is only knocked back a step in INIT. (acts after Cain)

Golemdrake(1) is feeling particularly homicidal and violent today. (1) At least this time he's going after Mage.

(charge: 6-1=5vs. 2-2=0) Mage can't seem to get out of the way. (+...2 strength bonus? overkill, but seems fair) (3+1+2=6vs.5) (crit: 1) Mage trips the golem. The golem headbutts the mech's leg. ([6]vs. 1+3=4) Something chinks in the leg(-1 to left leg tougha roll)

Cain decides that a little protection is in order. (2+2=4) Then he groans in pain. (really? any roll other than a 1 or 2...)

Oric attempts to finish Cain off, the old fashioned way.

Zap(3+6=9)
Awk(3+3=6)
Crit(6)

Oric looks at Cain. Then Oric flash steps and kicks Cain. (he used Enhance Awesomeness)
(3+(a very large amount I don't actually know) vs. 5-3=2)
(1+(awesome)+(awesome hit)=(awesome... let's say 8... 9 then.) vs... 1+3-1=3) Cain's body explodes in agony.
(crit: 6+2(awesome bonus)=8)
Cain luck(5) Cain is punted into the booze stockpile, the crate cushioning his crash. Suffice it to say he's disabled. (-2 to... everything. Next two turns.)

Mage stands, then nearly point blank points his assault rifle at Golemdrake's head and pulls the trigger.
(2+1+1(close range)=4vs. 6-1-1(situation(head smash onto mech))=4) (hit: heads)
(3+1(range)=4vs.2+2=4) (luck: 4) The bullet clips Golemdrake's sword hand. (......... I don't know what to do. 6) Golemdrake drops the sword.

Sword luck(1) There appears to be a psychological connection between the sword and Golemdrake. No return to normal, unfortunately. But... (5 or 6 to act under own control without sword...)

(5) The SWAT team stumble to their feet. They eye Mage. I wonder if they think he killed their leader?

Don't do it. If you wanted only eight characters you should have made the maximum number of players 8.

Kick the sword away, then assault rifle shoot Drake in the head. Try to stay out of melee range.
If Drake casts a spell then cancel it.

Get the sword. If mage kicks it away, tackle crush him. Or form the emerald of my arm into a spear and stab him if I can. If I go fleshy, get to the booze and chug some, then Transform into Apex/Emerald Dragon.

Sample Turn Sixteen: Assorted Combats and a Returned GM.

INIT
Golemdrake(1-1=0)
Mage(1-1=0) (Unlucky.)
Ecco(1(wot)+1=2)
Cain(2-2+1=1)
Oric(3)
SWAT(6-1=5)

Mage luck(2)

5 assault rifles are leveled at Mage. "You'll be coming with us... er... where's the door to get out of... this place?"

Oric fires another one of his Awesome Palm Beams.

Zap(3+6=9)
Awk(4+3=7)

The beam of pure Awesome flies at Cain.

(2+2(power and accuracy from spell)=4vs. 4-2(collapsed)-2(AGH)+1=1)
(2+2(spell)=4 vs. 3+2-2=3)
(crit:1)

The beam fizzles. Cain groans. (battered double, -2 to tougha)

Ecco fires at Cain. (5)
Missiles ho.

(4+2=6vs. 5+1-4=2)
(3vs.4-1=3)
(...? 4)

It doesn't do much, but Cain's getting angry.

Cain eats his anger and prepares his Crosshatch of Ragnarok. (success:6-2=4) Cain focuses through the anger to prepare his spell.

Golemdrake and Mage continue to spar.

(heads: Mage first, tails: Golemdrake first) (even, heads) Mage acts.

(4) The sword goes between the mech's legs. Assault rifle, go!
(2+1+1=4vs.3-1=2)
(2vs.4+2=6) Tink.

Mage backs off a little bit.

Golemdrake(1) rages. (no control for you.) Then he goes after the sword because that's what he needs. (3) Sword get, prone get. (prone,-2 to dodge.) (hostile: 5) Sword strike to mech legs ho. (1+1=2vs.6+1=7) The strike misses. That mech is more dexterous than it seems.
