Yes, mages should be able to spend 2 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1.

Yes, mages should be able to spend 3 mana to increase their spell's Zap roll by 1, but doing this provokes a Luck roll: on a roll of 2 or less, the spell loses one Awk.
No, this is a very bad idea.
No, this is a somewhat bad idea, I have my own ideas. (Post in thread).

Sample Turn 2: Overdoing It Somewhat?

DJ Ecco throws down some nice tunes. (6) Positive Power! +2 to Zap rolls for this turn.

INIT:
Drake(6+1=7)
Mage(3)

Drake is the first to act, firing a blast of frost breath from his maw.

Zap(4+2+2=8)
Awk(4+2=6)

Drake breaths in, then exhales, firing a torrent of frost out of his mouth. That doesn't look normal.

React roll(4: cast cancel, with penalty to Awk)

Mage attempts to counter the frost breath.

Zap(1+1+2=4)
Awk(4+2-1=5)

The spell is well done, although it could have been more powerful. Of course, considering the sheer volume of the blast... (4+2=6vs.3) The spell takes out a chunk of the frost... well. (Mage gets -1 to dodge for taking time to cancel spell, cancel results in less power)

Quicka(5-1-2=2vs.5+2(massive size and good awk))

That could have been worse. Of course, it still blasted most of Mage's body.

Damage(3+3vs. 3(tough),3+1=4(will)) The power of three shall... um... ouch.

Saving throw(1 oh.)
Odd results(1 seriously. Random.org wants Mage dead.)

Mage is now a block of ice.
Will(4+1)
Mage manages to swing his beard flail around... somewhat.

Dodge(6-2=4vs.1+1)
Damage(6-2(how odd)vs.4)

The flail smashes against Drake's chest. He's not fazed, but the shock of it suddenly returns him to human(would have happened anyway).
He takes the opportunity to go over to the alcohol stockpile.

Quicka(5+2=7)

He's at the booze crate. Take your pick.

Random Event(2) Nope.

Spoiler: Drake/Apex (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Mage (click to show/hide)

Ouch. Ahem.

Stand up. Cancel whatever spell Drake tries. Beard flail to his head.

((Yeah, slightly more varied/interactable arenas would be nice. I picked the fire globe with anticipation of cover. ))

The point of keeping the golems on fire isn't for the value of fire as a weapon. It's more to keep the golems functioning at a reasonable speed.
It was never a promise. It was a dirty lie, and you all knew that. You should all know by now that you can't trust a word I say.

((Excellent ideas, sometimes you just need to have a mage battle on a rickety wooden bridge above a volcano, maybe have the RNG decide which arena a match will take place in.))

((Ideas acknowledged. Once the game begins in earnest, I'll create six different arenas plus a finale arena, then assign them based on dice rolls.))

Drink whiskey. Use Apex Dragon Spell again if enough mana. Otherwise, use my Enhance spell. Dodge flail and take it away from him.

Sample Turn Three: Not a Good Turn

INIT:
Drake(6+2=8)
Mage(5)

Drake acts first because of his high speed! Wait, DJ Ecco's doing something. (1) That can't be good... (whimsy:even:environmental)

The arena shudders. Then it starts vibrating. Then magma. The edges of the arena boil, then rise upwards, shifting into magma. (arena now bordered by lava walls, will roll for fireball attacks against mages at the beginning of each turn starting next turn)

Drake shrugs, then chugs a bottle of whisky. (max mana!) He casts his signature dragon-shifting spell.

Zap(4+3=7)
Awk(6+1=7)

(You have got to be kidding me.)

(ultimate overshoot: (3))

Drake shifts, in a flash of light and sound and aether pings. Mage is awestrucken. Will(6) Shifting has only anchored Drake's mind, oddly.

(Now Prime Apex Dragon for three turns. (even:magic type). Gain Dragon Laser Gaze, Ender Frostfire Breath. +3 Tougha, +3 Stronga, -4 Quicka.)

((on a six for ultimate overshoot... 5 new spells, mana boost... more physical bonuses... as you might imagine, death.))

Mage stands... Wil(4+1), Stronga(6-1), breaking free easily. He proceeds to attempt to counter Drake's spell.

Zap(6+1=7)
Awk(6+2=8)

((This is why RTDs are entertaining- sheer randomness. Chance of double sixes is 1/36.))

Drake shudders. (will:(6)) He minimizes the effect, but his size is cut in half. (only +1 to Tougha and Stronga, -2 to Quicka, lose Dragon Lazer Gaze. Still next three turns though.)

Then he notices the beard flail.
(2vs.1)
(1vs.5)
No more beard flail. Only cold ashes.

Random Event: (1) Out of a door in the sky steps an odd man... DJ Ecco goes pale. (Cain the Sinful until Ecco's dead... along with everybody else.) "Kill and eat! Kill and eat! HAHAHA!!!"

Spoiler: Drake (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Mage (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: DJ Ecco (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Cain the Sinful (click to show/hide)
