Milk and cheese

Where can I get animals to milk?

I heard you can only milk purring maggots (ew) but I hopefully modded the cows to be milkable.

Where can I get these animals? The caravans never bring them.

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

Caravans will bring them(cows, that is, and most other tame animals), eventually, if you keep requesting them. They'll be in cages, however, so you have to check the cage contents(and be sure to make sure they're alive and uninjured befor you buy them)

For purring magots, iirc, you need to set an aminal trap over a chasm, or something like that.

EDIT:
Also iirc, you can only milk animals that dwarves can hold, which is aparently why cows/etc aren't milkable.

Wouldn't they need to be vermin for that to work?

Even if they weren't, as I recall, tame animals can't be milked so you'd have to have a wild cow to be able to milk them and that'd just result in a lot of "Farmer MacSarvesh cancels Milk: Interrupted by Cow" messages.

I guess you could always go with rat milk.

Okaayy, that gives a really strange image of a dwarf pulling on a female rats teats, with the rat giving a look like it's bieng raped.

I'm really not seeing why milking a rat would be any more disturbing an idea than milking a fist-sized maggot, which is presumably purring loudly with pleasue the entire time.

I'm not really sure I want to know WHAT comes out of the maggots which the dwarves call milk.

Do not dwell on the issue of purring maggots, dwarven milk or cheese lest you be driven mad.  For that matter, how the hell does one make a wine out of mushrooms?

This is what I believe dwarven cheese is like:

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

That is either the most disgusting thing I've ever seen, or the most awesome.

No wonder dorfs are as they are. Regarding their diet, that is.
