Giant Dwarf made lake, Can it be done?

I'm in the proccess of attempting to create a lake over a problematic portion of the map. I'm just about finished walling it off from the map edge ( Don't want all that water draining away now, do we? ) and the New Great Waterfall is about to be operational ( I'm digging out a 4 square long section from my Way-High-Up river to the area I wish to flood )
But i'm wondering if, once it fills up the first z level, it will begin to rise past that and flood the rest of the map? Has anybody else tried this?

I don't know. If no, then it's safe. If yes, then you have YAFF (Yet Another Flooded Fortress) and we can all laugh about it.

Actually my fortress would probably survive nicely, It's only connected to the outside in one spot and that's easily closed up 99% of the time.

It won't overflow if you don't use pumps. I made a small lake myself, it works quite nicely as far as I've seen, although it didn't fill all the way. Since channels work fine, a lake made out of a river will as well.

Yeah, It's just gonna be falling down a 7 story waterfall into the new lake area.

After setting everything up and turning it on, I went AFK for about 30 minutes and left it running. Coming back I still see there's only a small puddle of 2/7 and 1/7 water at the bottom of the waterfall. Not quite the lake I had imagined. Ah well.

Your lake will overflow if the source is above the lake like you have it. It's easy to fix - simply turn off the waterfall when you're done.
