Indeed. Atom-smashing the corpse just ensures you'll never get rid of the ghost.

Not quite. Atom-smashing the corpse doesn't prevent ghosts and makes the dwarf unburiable. However, you can still use a slab to prevent ghosts, if getting rid of bodies is your main goal.

You can just engrave a slab for them if youve smashed the body.

What atom smashing does solve is the body reanimating in an evil biome.

My 47.05 long-running fort experienced a very sudden tantrum spiral, that has slain 110 of the 250 dwarves within, plus uncountable animals and the dwarven trade caravan. The number might have been higher, were it not for the war-trained giant polar bears that the fort's been breeding for the past 15 years.

A Legends export found the cause: a goblin dancer that I allowed to remain in the fort for entertainment. Through mechanisms best left unknown, this otherwise-useless fool has been appointed the Master of the largest goblin civilization; a civilization which is, of course, at war with us.

Which means one of our citizens was also one of our highest-ranking enemies, which launched the spiral. God I love this game.

That's hilarious! And I thought dwarves politics were an enigma. Turns out goblin politics are even stranger.

Unfortunately, the Orc walks over a slime mine and blows up. You commit suicide, unable to bare the thought of living with out your one true love.

Tantrum spiral or loyalty cascade? Big difference, same effect.

I accidently still had the population cap in my new fortress set to seven from an earlier challenge fort.
When I found out and fixed it, after a year, I had rather high expectations for the first wave. So I happily centered the screen on the ariving migrants and found out that...
the migrant is an undead corpse. It was hostile too, so I had to send in my militia to kill it.  No other migrants in this wave either, guess they were all eaten.

Rather ominous. I obvioulsy know migrants can have vampires and werebeast among them, but this was a new one for me.

The elven (yes, yes, I know, but I like all sorts of exotic animals) caravan that arrived in the spring took such a long time to load up their goods and leave, that their yaks gave birth to a yak calf. They haven't departed yet, so it's curious to see, what will happen with this young merchantling.

[EDIT] My squad returned from exploring a ruined monastery. Their bounty? A goblin drunkard that's now asking for sanctuary.

One of my fortress's children has somehow managed to get two kills at the age of 4...

A goblin and a troglodyte too. Not exactly pushovers.
