I've got a very tiny fort in a small world that's been running for about 8 years - I've capped population at 75 for the sake of stablility in the early years and I'm also using this fort to show my SO the game a bit more, so limited chaos is helpful. I have also adjusted goblins to be mortal, which helps with lag & allows the other races a chance to succeed in world gen. My world is about 650 years old, and all of the established civs have footholds across the continent, some via colony forts but most via conquering of their neighbors. At game start, the elves had the highest numbers, followed by the dwarves, then the goblins and finally the humans. Because the goblins numbers had been limited by their widely ranged but still fragile mortality, the population of each race was almost equal. I have been saving every year, creating a copy of the world so I can export the legends to legends viewer and see how the game has progressed as we play. And it has not been a dull world.

In the first year, the elves and goblins sheared off over 2000+ of each others numbers in vicious wars. The humans had also fought with some of the elves in the north and had suffered, but their numbers remained mostly stable. By year three the dwarves were the super-power of the world as a result of staying mostly neutral as the other races tore their cities apart. I had established the fort far to the south of our parent civ, not far from a scattering of goblin pits. After a couple of years of playing, I learned that 1 of the goblin pits nearest to me was not in the same civilization as its neighboring pits & tower (it was conquered by rival goblins years back). I saw that those goblins too had strayed far from their parent civ, which was actually neighbors with my home civilizations fortress and hillocks. So my small team of axe dwarves and marksdwarves raided the pits twice. After a couple of successful raids as well as boosting our barracks with mercenary warriors, I openly pillaged the pits in year 7. We lost a few war dogs, but killed the main defender and scored some sweet troll leather gear.

The next year, when I exported legends, I saw we were now indeed at war with the goblin civ. I was pleased to see that my parent civ had rallied to my fort's cause and launched 5 separate assaults against the goblin pits and fortress nearest to them. All of their attempts were failures, but it was nice to see the support. This particular goblin civ's strongest dark fortress only had about 275 goblins, and their numbers barely reached 1000 altogether. I was pretty confident we wouldn't have any real issues with them as a result. For good measure, I sent my soldiers back to the pits 1 more time before saving, and killed a few stragglers.

The next year (last night's export), I saw that the goblins had struck back. They'd destroyed 3 separate fortresses, including our home fortress, that had been thriving just 1 year ago. Upon seeing this, I started an adventure (in a copy of the world) and learned that after suffering this devastating defeat, my civilization had started attacking it's own conquered territories! They had attacked 6 dwarves living in a forest retreat of their own civilization, despite having sent those dwarves there to take the retreat not 5 years prior. This happened on two occasions in the same year, after losing the fortresses. I also learned there were armies marching absolutely everywhere in the dwarven territories, which had for years been so peaceful.

And my tiny fort is just pluckin' along, oblivious to the absolute madness they've started.

Completed my surface walls and raising bridges just in time as a 30+ army of undead lead by some "Goblin Lasher gaunt slayer" (i guess it's a husk ?) decided to pay a visit .
Lost a couple of dwarves that were unfortunate to be between the alerted burrows and the undead entry point.

But after locking the fortress thanks to the raised bridges, my 40 dwarves (15 of them being childs/babies) are now stuck but completely safe, fortunately water and food will not be an issue, but still the undead do not seem to be willing to leave.

So i'm still waiting for the animals to slowly hurt the undead to reduce their numbers (all the animals are [Crazed] in that world so they attack the undead when they enter the map), i guess i'll have to start a weapon producing industry soon, as most of the time have been wasted in making the fortress perimeter walls and the giant floor on top to serve as roof to stop the berserked raven i don't have anything worthy yet.
After waiting and waiting there are now rougly 140 dead animals and no undead is dead again, still no caravan with armed escort coming to visit.

edit : oh boy the disaster.
As there were enough dwarves that were haggard and oblivious already from being confined or from some memory of being scared or under the rain , i decided to expel all of them to avoid problems when they would die leading into more haggard/oblivious dwarves.

Then, checking where the undead were, i decided i could have the lever pulled , so the banned dwarves would leave, then lever pulled again to reseal the fortress.
Worked well, but the fortress dwarves ignored my "pull the lever NOW!" order for long enough so 1 undead managed to find his way inside the walls before things got sealed again.

I didn't had enough weapons, so the drafted dwarves (the whole fortress) probably were just going with punch and kicks.

The lone undead managed to kill most of my dwarves, only a couple able (as in not child as them were all safe in the underground) dwarves were left alive.
As the waiting game wasn't any fun already with none coming and weakling [CRAZED] animals doing no damage to the undead, i decided to abandon the fort, hopefully the survivor would find a way into my next fort.

Oooo, yes, my own fort had something similar happen, except a) in my case I was dealing with digging out a ton of stuff in the new light aquifers and didn't get defenses up, and b) the army also ended up with a necromancer along for the ride, so undead that were killed and the animals they had slain (I hadn't dug out underground pastures yet) were getting revived just when I started to think "well maybe the visitors coming and occasionally taking one out and the occasional rhinoceros/elephant getting lucky will whittle them down."

They finally left after a full year, pretty much on the dot (so I suspect that's when yours would have left). Luckily I had managed to install a bunch of cage traps and a couple weapon traps in my fortress hallway by that time, because when the invaders left, anything that had been revived onto the map (like the undead animals) remained, including two undead elephants which... no. Just no. So I managed to keep my dwarfs burrowed and open the doors so that the remaining undead drifted into the traps.

I have also had two goblin sieges since then, although neither as bad as the undead one. My dwarfs are nooooot happy for the most part. There have been so many corpses it's taking forever to clear them out (and I don't think I have enough of a stockpile for the goblins and such for that matter) and yeah, it's all a giant mess. Not sure if I can pull this one through or if it'll just die out horribly as either one of the sieges makes it past my defenses (possibly when a lever-puller throws a tantrum right at the wrong moment or something), or loyalty cascades, or... something else.

Oh man, thoughts and feelings are still a mess ?

Meanwhile I've embarked on a coastal fort and I was struggling to find metal, until I dug a bit deeper and into the various light aquifers. The only coal and iron ore ARE into aquifers, it seems. So I've decided "fuck it, I need iron and i'm not going to try and trade for it"

As a result, my mining operation is more a of plumbing operation right now. I've done a drain into the caverns, no dwarf has yet drowned but man. All that water. Gotta make more drains.

Also just had a 30 dwarf migration wave on that 1-year young fort, putting it to the max for now (50). I'm pretty sure more than half of my pop doesn't have beds, any assigned jobs other than what they started at, or is anywhere useful. I've set up dwarf therapist for the latest version, time to make those dwarves useful.

And now a merchant's yak cow warped into a wall and I've got a dead human caravan in my hands. I don't even know how they died, there's just a bit of flowing water on my entrance, up to a maximum of 2/7. Are caravans still this touchy ?

Fresh fort, standard embark, first two migrants are flashing. Why? Are they... LEGENDARY?

My month long "Spring Break" for CraftRiddle does not seem to be working very well.  Oh, the populace is drinking, sleeping, and eating....but also hauling, doing military training on their own, and one threw a fit and is punching animals again.  No decrease in stressful behavior to my knowledge.  On top of that a migrant wave of about another 29ish showed up.  So once the break is over there will be a couple of rush jobs to make large multi-bed rooms.  I might end up with more stress on my hands then less.  Once's this let's play is over I am switching to whatever updated version DF is in and just playing a nice simple non-recorded game.   ::)

Lots of fellas migrating in who are competent knife users.
Wasn't there something about knife user skill not being viable, or never used or something? I forget. Each one has another weapon skill in addition to knife. Competent knife user, competent mace user, etc. Seems an unfamiliar sight.

Started a new testing fort, Orderpuzzles, to try out the 15-caste race I was inspired to create while hunting for the cause of an embark-crash bug.  Also checking the behavior of an intelligent pet I added.  Between the pets I brought along and a generous first migrant wave, I already have 21 citizens and got my first artifact.  Good luck on that one - my weaponsmith produced a lovely bronze warhammer, and will give me immediate access to masterwork weapons.  The first wave also included a multi-legendary farmer: brewer, tanner, beekeeper, and several social skills.  He'd probably make a great diplomat, but I'm not sure I trust him with the villain features.

I got my trading depot, constructed of silver bars, placed in its chamber before the first caravan.  I often have to use a temporary depot for the first year or two, so it was nice to get this one built in time even though I had to get through an aquifer first.  The light aquifers are so much easier to deal with!

Meanwhile, my mechanic has become romantically involved with all six of the other founders.  No other romances have begun on site yet, but Rurast seems to be quite popular.  She's quickly befriending the new arrivals, too.

EDIT: Second migrant wave arrived, with 8 more people.  This included a legendary weaponsmith who made some unknown artifact and a crafter who is legendary in glassblowing, weaving, and pottery.  Also getting quite a few relatives from very large world-gen families.

 It's the year 129. Four years in, Relicfactions has only 22 bedrooms for 172 dwarves, a dining room that's only halfway finished, an unfurnished hospital, and no militia to speak off. We do, however, have a very nice temple to Ottan the Insightful, god of Wisdom, so that's something.

Started a 0.47.02 fort to see what all the fuss is about. So far the only new problem is getting the aquifer to be wet enough to support a well.

Two slayers have been slain already, due to some rather unfriendly blind cave ogres. The ogres are both named and caged now. They used up all my cage traps, though, and allowed a third blind cave ogre into my fort. And somehow, she's just no !!fun!!. Right now she's chilling in the rough sleeping quarters I carved out, wandering aimlessly through children playing make-believe and dwarves walking around her to haul beds into place. No sign of aggression, and no one seems afraid of her. Really hope it stays that way.
