Got a big idea for a tavern, and implemented the boring part, which consists of a pillar running from the bottom of the canyon to the top. I intend to build the tavern on top of that pillar.

On a grim note, the militia commander was sparring with a swordsdwarf. The swordsdwarf charged, and barrelled over the commander with such force that they both fell through a wall to the other side...

...onto a 30 z level drop onto the frozen riverbed. Both bodies burst on impact.  :-\

Make your exterior walls three thick, so that dwarves can't teleport through them to their doom, make blocks then construct walls using the blocks, I've had dwarves dodge incoming arrow fire and jump through the carved fortifications they were sheltering behind.
I think I'll convert the current barracks into a library, but when I build the new one I'll keep that in mind. Two blocks thick isn't adequate?

A band of elephant men is roaming my (small, 2x2 embark) map. I hope they don't kill my giant dingo's. Previously, a few warthog men killed 2 of them, and two of my remaining wardogs. If warthog men can do that, I don't want to see what elephant men will do to them. Or my dwarves.

EDIT: ah well, I didn't need those giant dingos anyway  >:(

Nope, the dodge this traps have to deal with the units dodging up to three tiles away in any direction, including up and down.  So if your new barracks is one z level below the surface, they could dodge up to the surface.  Goblin lasher:"hey boss, there's a couple of dwarves out on the surface..."  Goblin Commander:"Get them!"

What do you expect when you build your walls from cardboard? :P

You can simply adjust the size and location of your barracks so it ends far enough from the abyss; three tiles of safety cordon are in my experience completely safe. Dwarfs will not charge during sparring if their partner is outside the barracks zone. If danger only lurks in one direction, you can simply shift the "core" furniture of the barracks away from it and may not even lose much in barracks area. Usually, there's no need to reconstruct anything.

My champion is hanging out at the tavern, being drunk and telling everyone the story of his appointment as champion.

How are goblins taught on how to train their sword skill ?

Easy : take a bolt in the eye , pull out the bolt and voila

My woodcutter just got hit by a log, got its lower body and leg mangled, very early in the fortress (I had just started the game). My dwarves kept her fed and hydrated, but eventually she went berserk due to sleep deprivation and was killed by my miners. Luckily she didn't use her axe. I couldn't get her to sleep on a bed, she would just hang around the place she was hurt, even though I assigned a room to her and the dwarves had the recover wounded labor (only the miners were busy).

Rest in peace. She pulled quite a fight, but didn't cause any significant damage.

Wounded dwarves need a bed in a hospital zone.

Personally, I have never had a dwarf injured by falling logs while treecutting.
I think the only way that can happen, is when a previously cut tree dropped some logs on the upper level branches of another tree, and when you cut that down, those can fall on dwarves and do actual damage. The logs that fall from a normal treecutting job don't do damage.

The whole thing happened in a hill and my miners were channeling part of it so I could make the entrance a perfect, aesthetic square. Pretty sure that has something to do with it, but since I didn't see the combat log at first, I thought she just kinda tripped and got really hurt.

A recent bar fight in my fortress reveals that dorfs are quite happy to flop onto the floor of the hospital when all the beds are full. They've even been known to get treated while there.

Hah! My first fortess born dwarves, children of 4 starting dwarves, got married. One is the eldest son of the Clan of Picks, the other the eldest daughter of the Clan of Axes (I use a custom profession name as family name)
Guess their new family name just has to be Clan of Pickaxes.

I just accepted semi-residency for a human that is a 'former exalted virtue of the Moral Faith'. When I made her a welcome statue, my mason made a statue of her being surrounded by humans, referring to her ascension to the position of exalted virtue.

Guess she was some kind of high priest? She is also 103 years old, I'll prepare a tomb for her. If she manages to survive until full citizenship, I'll assign her to perform at the temple.

well...my fort was attacked by a human lord wereskink..who proceeded to get the shit kicked out of him by my bookkeeper...then my weaponsmith created a masterwork battleaxe and promptly lost it and is now moping around because of emotional shock..

outside of that im just trying to cope with coming back to df after such a long break..can barely remember how to do anything at the moment

edit: should also mention my current military is the most inefficient one i have ever had...it has the highest turn over rate of 30 people dead in just 1 year time. and the military commander never bothers to train or fight. everytime there is training to be had he is off drinking or partying, and everytime there is fighting he is just slowly walking (i think its because he has too much gear on him..does the armor user skill have any effect on dwarfs movement speed?) towards the threat, usually missing the entire fight...so i also have the most corrupt military commander i have had in a long time

Expanded the surface fort and established a new barracks. Thought taht thick walls was an extravagance of space, but now there's only a 2-3 z level drop to worry about instead of a 30+ one.

Work on the novelty tavern and megatemple are coming along smoothly, in spite of interruptions from terrifying giant buzzards and giant red winged blackbirds.
