My smelters aren't working, they refuse to make coke from lignite or bituminous coal, saying no avaliable fuel depsite some of it being RIGHT NEXT TO THE SMELTER! I've tried moving them multiple times as well with the same error

So, in the middle of the siege, a barfight broke out. A particularly bad one.

What the fuck is wrong with you? We're getting sieged by old god-worshipping fish people yet you're killing people over some petty squabble?

Well, the siege is officially over. Some of the pelagics fled. Only one civilian casualty and a whole shitton of dead animals and visitors. I still call this a success.

If you 'q' the smelter and the "make coke from lignite/coal" job is in red, and you hit Enter, you will see which needed regeant is unavailable to that smelter in red text. If all else fails, make a new smelter, and forbid then unforbid some of the lignite and some of the fuel, to detach them from any other job that might already own them.

People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

Maybe they were freaked out by the rhythmic undulations of the dance the gnome was performing? I mean, murder is probably acceptable when a gnome is jiggling their bits too close to you.

The regents are all in white and forbidding unforbidding did nothing, already tried making new ones and it failed as well

do you have refined coal? You can't make coal from lignite or from bituminous coal if you don't have some charcoal or coke to begin with. Smelters can't use unrefined lignite or bituminous coal for fuel.

My fort's most prominent poetic form is called The Nails of Biting.
It's not as bad as Vogon poetry, but it's pretty terrible.

I think a roc just died of starvation.

Either that, or it was shot down by goblins.

I thought I was rid of the visitor bug, but nope, they're over the cap again. They're just dripping in very slowly. I guess I'm just lucky with this fort to get them in manageable proportions.
Petitions also seem broken, even those guests that did look legit never petitioned.

Try getting rid of your bug-visitors (atom smash/magma drowning/etc). There've been a few reports of petitions working once you've gotten rid of the first wave of visitors.
