What the f-...

I was following one of my miners around, seeing how long of a trek it really was between the stone warehouse and the mineshaft, when BAM! Suddenly I'm a z-level up. My miner's just sitting, in a tree, that wasn't there... Can they do this? Why'd the tree just instantly exist? I thought they gradually grew? Is this some preemptive elf assault?

Yeah, White Jade uses STONE_TEMPLATE shear values of 15 ,15, 100 which you can see here is worse than leather against edged attacks.

Ah, wonder why he did so good against all the draltha then, they clawed him a lot and it only chipped. Guess size had a hand in that.

The answer is yes. Trees are truly nefarious inventions

haven't played DF in a while, and I'm on year 3 or so of a new fort. I've basically abandoned the metal industry in favor of getting my agriculture up and running.

I *think* I have basically all of the Dorfy livestock, save one or two species, with breeding pairs, which is usually my strategy. I have 3 different kinds of dye growing (thanks to a section of above-ground area I walled/floored off to use as an above-ground garden, that is growing every single plant I have a seed for), I have 1 full max-size wood storage compartment, with another, half-size-ish wood stockpile near the Depot that's ~80-90% full atm (and another, half-size wood stockpile on the surface that is empty atm. surface wood stockpile is take from anywhere. Depot wood stockpile takes only from surface. underground, secure stockpile takes only from Depot--possibly overkill, but eh).

Oh, and I embarked on a waterfall because I like to, and my first cage traps have borne fruit: several wild boars. If my cage production would keep up to spec, I would have gotten all 7 of them. As it is I *only* got 5 or so.

I want some of those Kangaroos I've seen around.

My current project is, after 3 years, digging out bedrooms for everyone, smoothing them, and engraving the before moving people in.

But the reason that I posted was that I saw what looked like a dead dwarf in what I *knew* was a wall. I went "Armok damn it" and then hit "K" to check it out.

Turns out it's an engraving off a dorf. derp.

Currently up to 74 dorfs, and most of them are haulers, despite their skills. I need to get around to doing some other stuff, but not yet......

Annoyances like that are why I messed with that in both my mods. :V

so THAT is why those annimals weren't butchered.

I had gotten a Panda from the elves without the capacity to keep it alie. Set it to be butchered, but nothing was being butchered.

It turns out I had suspended Butchery because there were too many skins piling up and the Tanning shop couldn't keep up. durr......

Time to thin out the poultry, again.

EDIT:

also just rescued 4 dogs that have been underwater for at least 2 years after they jumped off the edge of the cliff during a fight. I think it was originally 2, then they had underwater puppies.

......I may have rescued them 80% to see if I could get some ore out of the water-level embankment, 20% to get them back......

new fort.

EVERYTHING IS GIVING BIRTH AT ONCE!

2 different Lambs giving birth to a single lamb
4 different batches of Goose eggs hatching at once (26 Goslings)--all 4 non-Ace females
1 Nanny Goat (Only 1 female in the fort)
4 Dogs giving birth (even though one of them is Asexual--10 puppies)
2 Cats giving birth (both females, 5 Kittens)
2 bathes of Ducks giing birth (27 Ducklings.....so far)

INTO THE CAGE WITH YE.

in 1 year I'll pick out the biggest of the bunch to live. the rest of you will be summarily executed, devoured, and we will wrap your skins around ourselves.

And I still have 9 Duck Eggs, 28 Hen Eggs, and 10 Turkey Eggs that need to hatch.

Plus I expect the Cavies to give birth soon, maybe a Llama, and hopefully a Sow (brought 2 male, 2 female, got 1 breeding pair between them).

This would all happen just as it's time to haul everything to the Depot.

EDIT: I have a feeling that there's an invisible mist I cannot see like in Evil biomes. Except this is a Viagra mist.

even the Carp are having small fry.

also--WHY IS THE PIGLET ASEXUAL? I need more breeding pairs of pigs, damn you!

EDIT: HELP ME! I'M IN A CUTE, FLUFFY POULTRY TIDAL WAVE!

I started with 7 Chickens, I've got 28 Chicks. I started with 6 ducks. I've got 36 Ducklings. I started with 8 Geese. I've got 26 Goslings. I started with 6 Turkeys. I've *only* got 11 Poults right now.

*squints*

that's over 100 of the cute little buggers.

in about a year, we're gonna be tracking feathers everywhere from the Butcher's shop.

Oh Armok, I need help. I just forbade 13 more fertilized Turkey eggs, and 6 more fertilized Hen eggs.

I NEED HELP!

.......on the other hand, what would it be like to embark with only a pick, an axe, plump helmet seeds, and.....approximately three metric assloads of poultry (metric, not imperial), with the intent of being a meat/leather factory, and approximately all of the fertilized eggs forbidden until they hatch.....???

ARMOK HELP ME! I'M GONNA TRY IT!

You went to the trouble of forbidding the eggs? I just had the nest boxes behind doors then forbid the doors.

Just had a hunter gun down a whole squad of goblins without getting touched... Shots to the heart, lungs, and brain were his usual, and he dodged every bolt sent at him, only one gobbo got up to melee range and his head was simply smushed by a copper crossbow... Yet me squad of legendary marksdwarves will grab their crossbows, run into melee range, and go a bludgeoning and all die.

I try to avoid using marksdwarves unless their is a fortification wall between them and their target. In my experience, marksdwarves are mostly useless in most other situations.

My current fortress is on a terrifying swamp island. One corner of the island is a normal ocean though, so I have to heavily micromanage to make sure everything dies on the beach. The entrance to the fort is a project I am working on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A massive microline tower will be built here, and my dwarves will ascend the heavens!

Just started playing Dwarf Fortress again after a long hiatus - when I returned to my fort my dwarves were unloading a merchant caravan they'd taken for all they had.

Hey, at least with the prepared food barrels they won't starve.
