lost in under a year to a siege. didn't recall the combat to be so brutal, it used to be possible for a couple untrained squad swarm the first goblin ragtag.

also, all weapon traps missed a lot. need to pack up a better mechanic next time
Is it possible to have a siege so soon? Also, there are always 10 goblins in the first siege, it seems.

As a dog person, I kind of regret not removing dogs from the raws because now I see them get hurt badly or even killed in the combat logs, but I need them for early game defense. I guess next time, I'll just edit the raws so that I've got some kind of lizard creature fulfilling the role of dogs.

This hasn't stopped me, being a cat person, from modding cats to be trainable for war, removing their adopt-a-dorf magic, and giving them the [TRANCES] token.

The reason I don't like dogs in my fort is because they provoke wild animals.
Dog1: Look, there's an elephant, let's tear it apart!
Dog2: Hell yeah!

And that's why I keep mine safely in the fortress all pastured or caged up, with any war dogs in use securely chained wherever I need some security.

A glassmaker just made an artifact green glass terrarrium. How do I transfer the cyclops to it safely?

Also, I caught my first live yeti. Looks like the cyclops won't be alone in his eternal confinement.

Dig out a hallway, build the cyclops cage at one end, a cage trap at the other, and forbid all your other cages so no one uses them for the trap? Link the cyclops cage to a lever, wall off for safety, pull and enjoy.

I just had a "lord consort" visit and decide to stay. Preparing for Trojan war reenactment.
Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

A masterwork of Urist has been lost!
This always happened when the caravans left.

They are, without a doubt, thieves!

I don't think you can even use an artifact cage in a cage trap, can you?

You can use artifact as cage furniture (b-j).

The tricky part is transfering a caged hostile from animal stock pile into the cage(restraint) building.
In theory, it should be no issue, but the possibility of Urist getting distracted from removing the hostile from the cage stockpile and into the cage furniture depends on distance.  It should be nearly instant if those are adjacent to each other.

Noted. Building cage now......say, deconstructing the cage won't set the beasty free, will it?

I re-start my Hallfings embark because I was not satisfied on how autolabor worked out the first time.

This embark has 4 tower neighbors, and plan to make above ground.

This time, I made it to autumn with one complete 7x7 5z tall building; basement (z-1) up to z+4 high, with a built in Kea trap above.

I got an undead siege beginning of summer, but they disappeared right away before I even start the civ alert.

From the 7 founders, a couple are "lovers" already, so there remains 3 males and 2 females heteros.
Of the 2 summer migrants: 1 is a married female (without her family), and the other is 1 female bi.

It should not.  It makes that caged hostile available to be put back to the animal stockpile.
These cage furnitures are what is called "zoo."  The artifact cage with hostile inside should give plenty of happy thoughts and wealth.

I'm aware of that, I just wanted to be sure of the finer delicacies of cage-swapping. The tavern I'm going to stick him in isn't even complete yet. By the way, will I need to designate a room from the cage in order to have it admired, or should sticking it in the tavern be sufficient?

The exploratory mining is going slowly, but some prime spots for the great obsidian block have been spotted. I'll be away all day at a doctor's appointment in the big city, so nothing will get done today.

In other news, I gotten another pitiful goblin siege, and have caught another yeti. I could start a yeti breeding program now....

I've just discovered the problem of making a hunter an emergency treechopper (damned dwarves, climbing trees for no reason and never getting back down), when combined with the usual chop-trees-with-training-axes costcutting measure.

Apparently he doesn't seem to mind the fact he just spent about a week beating the shit out of an emu.
