That tag only applies to creatures with the [NATURAL] token, which crundles lack.

My military's first live-training exercise is almost ready. 34 Troglodytes, 4 Troglodyte children and 3 (feral) Trolls shall be set free in the middle of the new barracks, resulting in a bloodbath. Problem is, the new recruit is REALLY new.....I'll have to wait a while for him to get up to snuff.

I have just started a new world in 42.04.  After a false start - where Mountain Gnomes swamped my wagon and drank my booze - I restarted a new fortress FAR from those mountains.  I have two-room apartments for my starting Dwarfs (bedroom and private dining room), a few offices built, a few levels dug out for storage, farms, pigs, chickens, got a good start.  So started working on a tavern.  Barely had a few tables put in it, a few barrels of booze, and a bag of mugs and suddenly my Dwarfs are telling stories and jamming out poetry.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Before I saved tonight I was alerted to the fact that I now have two visitors - a dwarf who is a bard and a dwarf who I believe may be a marksmen.  Useful people before I get my first wave of new subjects or even a trading caravan?   What game am I playing?  Tomorrow - temples and look into a library.  :D

Got bored of waiting for the new guy to get good, so I pulled the lever and commenced the bloodbath. As expected, 0 dwarven casualties. Now I can focus on the cat breeding chamber, particularly setting up the crundles within....

I thought I was over for the night and then realized two things.  I forgot to tell them NOT to cook the plump helmets.  And I forgot to assigned a tavern keeper.  When looking about my first wave of, what I thought, were worthless immigrants had arrived.  Or were they?  Three were fisherdwarfs and I am right next to a brook and a lot of small ponds.  Also, one peasant went right to the tavern and joined to visiting dwarfs in a three-dwarf-chorus.  I made her a bard on the spot.

But....now don't know how to run a library.  How do I make books?  I have to go look this up...

I'm surprised that elves brought a caravan this spring and not ambushes after I so audaciously violated the lumberjacking agreement last year. And they were even nice enough to bring me....wait for it.....a breeding pair of......*GASP*....GIANT EMUS! I'll be buying those, and that turkey gobbler too. I think I'll throw some turkeys and nest boxes into the cat breeding chamber to increase the number of crundle victims.

EDIT: Some human idiot had decorated some arrows with wood and I hadn't realized it, so I was forced to seize the birds lest I lose this excellent opportunity. The elves are going to start a war with me any day now....

OH AND WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT, ANOTHER FORGOTTEN BEAST DECIDED TO SHOW UP RIGHT AFTER I SEIZED THE BIRDIES! A BIG FUCKING BLOATED TARANTULA WITH BIG BLACK CLOSE-SET SCALES, A SPIRAL SHELL AND A POISONOUS BITE! WELL, HOW NICE OF HIM TO COME ON LAND FOR ONCE! WELCOME TO DIE, MOTHERFUCKER! ENJOY GETTING HACKED TO PIECES BY AXEDWARFS!

One of my human mercenaries just claimed the position of lady of The Prestigious Band.

Shouldn't this count as having contact with that civilization? I mean, their supreme leader is upstairs in my barracks leading a spear demonstration.

At least she's not demanding fancy rooms.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I haven't played in a while, and all of these changes are new to me.

So what's going on is learning, and learning means fun.

Getting REAL tired of losing civilian haulers, miners and woodcutters to FBs and cavern creatures so now EVERYONE gets basic military training to get at least one level in a weapon skill.
They will then be issued a helmet and a weapon to carry all the time. Im thinking most dwarves will have crossbows because I can train that fairly quick.

Unless you have a massive surplus of something for ammo, the logistics would be a nightmare for supply a fort's worth of ammunition for both fighting and basic training (as marksdwarf seems to level painfully slowly without live-fire, at leas in my experience.) It'll also result in them stopping to reload instead of getting the fuck away from whatever's trying to kill them.

-

Settled the Frost of Ghosts. And so far.... Very disappointing. It snows congealed goblin blood from time to time, but is otherwise a perfectly safe and boring glacier. Hopefully goblin proximity will fix that somewhat.

As a matter of fact I have  plenty of both ammo and live targets. I have gobbos, trolls, undead and a green glass FB that should withstand bolts (right?). I mass produce bolts to get as many weaponsmiths as possible. For artifact weapons.

Seems like a waste to me. But if you have the surplus ammo for that many dwarves and don't mind the inevitable deaths from poor choices on the dwarves' parts, then go for it. And please do use the FB first. I wanna see if things made from gem materials will pulp if hit enough times and the only test subject I have is in one of my tribal forts that can fly and is functionally immune to blunt force trauma (which, unfortunately, my best soldier uses.)

The fact all my competent archers went and killed themselves fighting goblin-dwarves armed with axes, spears, and clubs in melee with wooden bows doesn't help that situation.

-

Missed a good portion of the fall caravan, but a courtyard of sorts has been carved in the ice, and a small family arrived, adding needed hands. Opened a "library" which is really currently just a room with some tables and chairs in the ice. There's also a troll who decided to pick a fight with both a cave croc and GCS. Dunno if the spider is dead or not.

-

Food crisis. Inattentiveness and greedy dorfs lead to possible starvation, and there's no game to be had for emat. Desperation leads to plant collection. Plump helmets in short supply with no skilled gatherers.

Prepare coffins. Pray for deliverance from starvation.

Blame Dobar.

Another artifact bone bed? This is getting ridiculous. Maybe I'll just stick them both in the barracks. Oh, and that's the other thing: I seem to be getting strange moods EVERY SEASON now.

Had a kea fly over one of my caravan wagons, which of course led to the whole wagon imploding and the caravan leaving. That is such a stupid mechanic. But until the export wealth bug is fixed I don't suppose it really matters anyways.

At least the wagon that scuttled had the dogs I ordered on it. Time to rebuild the pack.

Er....I hope that means caravan escorts.  No matter what version of this game I play...I always feel like my Dwarfs are sticking their tongue out at me.   :-\
