Started a new fortress in df2012. At embark, I discovered that flux stone is a fabled item in this world, completely unheard of.

Old (fixed in DF2014) bug. Flux isn't absent, the site finder is broken. You should _never_ search for flux through the site finder in DF2012, it regularly fails to spot flux layers.

Immediately after embarking, you can look at the "stone" tab of the "z" status screen. If one or more flux stone types are marked green, that means they are present in complete layers on the site and are therefore considered non-economical (i.e. allowed for stonecrafting and the making of stone masonry).

In the middle of a fight with some trolls, Starscream- I mean, Kadol- ran off to kill a gorlak passing by. Megatron- I mean Astot- for some reason started beating him after the sparring was over once they were done with the trolls. Punched him and kicked him around, no response from Starsc-Kadol. No loyalty cascade either, just a beating. I noticed Kadol has often been charging off to fight other things, even going down to the next cavern layer and getting brutalized by some troglodytes when we found the little passage down to the next layer, even though he was ordered to kill a GCS once it had webbed his companions... I suspect he'll go and join another squad soon, maybe even confront his old captain a few times. He'll come to his senses soon, or I'll crush him with a bridge and leave his slab in his old room.

Currently, we're making nourishing fruit-of-the-caverns salads: dwarven sugar, prepared giant toad lung, prepared cave crocodile kidney and dwarven sugar.

Gah! Outside of modding, is there any way I can use up these stupid feathers and chitin? (Rhetorical question, pretty sure there isn't, but would like to know if you find an answer.)

Nope. Modding only.

Seems like the poo snake had taken issue with poor old Budam, but that doesn't explain where her corpse went. Set on fire by the magma crab? Lost to the magma sea? It'll remain a mystery.

Flesh does rot eventually. If she was a flesh blob, she would leave no skeleton once she rotted away.

I would take a mod that let you slap feathers onto chairs and cut chitin into mugs or something

More than likely when it died it stopped swimming and fell into the semimoltenrock

The minecart grinder scored its third forgotten beast. The second one had been the hardest - a gargantuan kite that was surprisingly quick and good at dodging. It was still blocked by a later bridge and distracted by the doors at the well house and eventually tried to murder some more crundles, which could only be reached by going out through the grinder again, which didn't work so well that time. The third beast was easy by comparison, just walked headfirst into a 200k speed platinum minecart, got thrown around and had vital bodyparts mashed after a while.

A bit later, some crundles tried to visit the fort, also through the grinder. Massive showers of crundle parts resulted.

A goblin from one of our dysfunctional sieges got stuck at the map edge for a year and a half. Dropped a minecart on top of her/him, gobbo dodged out of the way and _another one_ showed up, similarly stuck. I built a path to hopefully funnel caravans through them (let them deal with those idiots), but the opportunity was snapped up by a stealthy visitor. Good work, unnamed werelizard! I can only hope this gets the goblin civ unstuck.

And an ettin showed up on the heels of the elven caravan. With some luck, the depot bridge was closed before the visitor got into sight range of the war animal pasture and diverted through the surface grinder. The kill was effected by brain damage to both heads.

Apart from that light entertainment, we finally caught up with our farm overproduction by cooking ~2500 meals and making ~2000 booze; stocks are 5000 food and 6000 booze currently. Yikes.

Four legged animals just climbed some trees to get across a river. These animals have hoofs on their legs. I wont even bother to question this.

Logic in Dwarf Fortress is just like my army of war trained cassowaries.
There's no war trained cassowaries.

The Modest Mod treats chitin as shell, and everything you can do with chitin can be done with shell.[/shamelessplug]

I don't remember if you can do anything with feathers, off the top of my head. I'll check tonight and add a "decorate with feathers" option if there isn't one already.

A log fell in a chicken. No damage done. A woodcutter just randomly hacked the shit out of the chicken. She's now in avian heaven.

Strip mining of the limestone and hematite deposits in our upper floor has proceeded well and steel production is making way for stronger weaponry. Long live the figure of entanglement!

OK, now I'm just amused.  Rimclose got two FBs within the same month.  One was dusty, the other had poisonous blood. They wandered for a bit, squared off, and killed each other.  Now, back to business as usual.  That was entertaining.  I should have sold tickets.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

After a year and a half of going caravan to caravan for drink, we finally have enough drink to last. Strip mining of the limestone will continue until none is left. The mayor is obsessed with shields.
