Tantrum spiral. That is all. Right now more corpses are made than there is time to bury. The population is down roughly by foruth from 97 The seasoned military elite is putting down their best friends and they don't even care, although slaughter is always sort of enjoyable. All escalated so quickly I don't even know yet why.

The first 30 minutes: Now we are soon running out of food as the fields were destroyed and we relied on imported food anyway. Population is down to 76 from 97. Only three high ranking military officers are calm.

The 1st hour: Now only two of them are calm. There is almost nothing left of what used to be easily the biggest clan in the fortress, the Meboddom clan.

The 2nd hour: Population is changing rapidly: now at 64. This is the deadliest tantrum spiral I have seen yet. All this seems to have started from a few kids being sad for having to rest in the dormitory instead of having their own bedrooms. At least food consumption is now under control as not many more than two sane persons are trying not to starve themselves.

The 3rd hour: The mayor seems to have starved in the dining hall sitting at the table. The city gates are being enclosed with bricks. No one can leave this place until the situation restabilises.

The 4th hour:We have finally ran out of alcohol. The severity of madness is thus getting unbearable. The two generals put all three sane people they could find to butchering animals. One of them was collecting clay underground and had hardly heard the horror happening aboveground. This is the only way we can make it. The grand old man of the fortress and the founder of the previously most prestigious clan, Kogan Meboddom was found fishing whistling some old tune in a minor key. Him too the soldiers tried to get to butchering dogs but the old man refused to stop fishing. Later, Kogan was found laying cold among his kin along the street. The two soldiers encountered a fourth sane person: a weird guy who has no reported parents and hardly any friends. He had migrated hither alone. The population is now at 36.

The men in charge now found different two ecstatic soldiers who, although having lost families and most friends, are now taking joy of slaughter and starting fistfights. Only swarms of flies provide them with slight disgust.

The 5th hour: An army of goblins has arrived to our location, and our sealing of gates not having been completed, the trolls are smashing through the doors in any minute. We have decided to surprise the green faced fools - they don't know we rather rush into their rows than stay inside for any longer. There is many more dead bodies and those attempting killing themselves here than living anymore. We must break out. The population is 33. Every non suicidal person is now given the best equipment that can be found regardless of his military rank. We open the gates, retreat to the furthest corner of the city and wait.

6th hour: Every insane dwarf was first put to death by the enemy who attacked with in great numbers. The one squad of survivors in various conditions of mind and body we could put together could manage against the enemy in the narrow streets. Amazingly, the fortress survived the siege. The population is now at 9.

I recorded the battle on video but unfortunately it was corrupted by my zooming out in the map while recording.

what about the 8(8 Damn Emoticon)? How slow is that? My dwarves have seemed slower after exploring the caverns, so might closing them off do it?

This will help, but it won't solve the problem. Every explored tile on the map decreases your FPS (also before its explored, but less so then) even if it's walled off.

"Inspired' (read: blatantly poaching from) Tuftedstockades, decided to launch a zero-point peasant embark into an undead-resurrecting wasteland.  Couldn't quite get the zero-vegetation, but managed to get most of my ambitions after a couple days playing with worldgen: embarked into a terrifying snow-covered rocky wasteland with frozen brook.  On arrival, I was immediately notified that I had discovered a lair: turns out this particular wasteland also plays host to two named zombie giant jaguars.  And, just in case that wasn't enough, I'm also playing host to another eight zombie camels and two zombified birds of prey.

This is going to be quite lovely.  ^_^

EDIT: Not one month in, and two fatalities.  That's...a wee bit ahead of schedule...

EDIT 2: And my settlement has crumbled to its end.  Welp, time to give it another go, I think.

Fuck!
I went away from the computer to do something for a while, came back and the settlement had withered. Not having played in a long time, I pressed space, expecting a screen where I could look around the fortress before finishing- and of course, it saves the game. Well, shit.

Even worse, apparently the end came simply from people dying of thirst. Ugh.
Now I really want to work out how to mod brewing into an automatic thing. Pretty sure someone mentioned how to do that a while back...

isnt brewing made automatic just by pressing r on the queue screen?

they repeat the task as long as they have ingridients for it...so just place plump helmets into making, have your carpenter make barrels in an infinite loop and you should have your brewer continue working on alcohol for the rest of your life...or until you run out of wood, plump helmets or barrels...which shouldnt happen as long as you have your industry set up proper.
If you ran out of plants the job at least gets suspended, and might be cancelled. Same thing if you run out of barrels (far more common for me back in my playing days). Then when your farmer brings the plump helmets in it doesn't get restarted.

IIRC, you can get the game to automatically queue up brewing jobs from the manager. Up to 30 at a time. Put 10 of those in the stack and your dorfs will keep queuing up brew jobs until 300 are completed. One gets canceled it gets replaced. Your little doofuses, who frustrate you with their mind-blowing devotion to whatever their ridiculous AI tells them to do (back in my days this was mostly a) punching carp for no reason, while b) fleeing from the stationary giant sponge) are now 100% focused on doing exactly 300 brew jobs. The problem is if your fort runs long enough/has enough thirsty dorfs/etc. they'll run out eventually anyway.

You do this by appointing a manager from the noble's screen, and giving him a desk. Then you go to to the management screen (u-m was the key combo, IIRC), and you can type in a job. You tell it how many of those jobs you want to do. Then the Manager does some magic in his office (time depends on his Organizer skill), and when he's done the jobs will be evenly spread out amongst the appropriate workshops. Which sucks if you're trying to have this one exact guy whose a Legendary Armorsmith use his personal workshop to make full steel armor for your entire damn fort, while some loser you're training up makes Copper trap parts at the others; because each workshop will get half the armor jobs; but for this that's not a problem.

When complete the manager gains Organizer skill, so next time you queue up jobs they get sent to the workshops quicker.

So here's a question I have, that I would make a thread about if I had screenshots or a save file, but I do not as this happened very early for me in Dwarves and I did not see it as anything significant at the time, so I'm inquiring here.

Is it common at all to embark where there are little canvas tents and campfires filled with about twenty or so dwarves, who come up as "visitors" in the units list and never seem to leave? Because this happened to me early on when embarking on a river in a rocky wasteland biome, and I haven't been able to bring up any information on it other than some people mentioning weird bug experiences with sleeping dwarves in adventure mode, and people embarking on empty pig-tail fiber tents. Does anyone know anything about this?

Congratulations! You have accidentally embarked on either a bandit camp or a camping army.

I have a master potter, and am getting many, many masterwork crafts. For some reason, all but two of the figurines in that pile are of various elves and procedural night trolls murdering one another.  ???

Also, fifty-one pages of my dudes punching an unconscious giant bat in the head over and over and over and over ad infinitum.

Awesome! Pretty trouble free defense, huh! Try trapping some of them - though not with cage traps. Dwarven warrior slaves!

-storysnip-
Brutal. And well-written. I haven't actually had any tantrums in the new version yet, which seems weird since my dwarves have been exposed to a decent amount of hardship. I guess that artifact sawblade in a weapon trap next to the main stairwell makes up for the lack of proper rooms, eh?

-advicesnip-
Thanks man, I don't think I've actually tried out those manager options before.
I do have a manager in my current fort (and most others), but they are mostly there so I can use workshop profiles, haha.
I'll give it a go when I get home.

My mayor keeps wanting short swords.
I am starting thinkg to set up an obsidian farm only to appease her insatiable desire of Short Swords, as I don't want to finish Iron (of which I have plenty, but still...) or any other metal ore just to satisfy an idiot.
We have two squads of War Hammer Lords, another one training with Axes, a Guard with only crossbows (not trained, of course) but she wants short swords.

And obviously all her trade ban are about Short Swords.

Well, if the mayor is standing in the right place at the right moment, you need to cast obsidian only once to solve the problem... you could even leave the water out, now that I think about it...

No, I like her. Apart from the swords, she is useful and by replacing her I will risk a riot as she is at her.... fifth term, IIRC. The fort is 5yo and she has been the first and only mayor.

Use the iron. Swords give >100% return when melted.

Not to discourage someone from senseless murder but you can also replace a mayor by selecting a new one.
