Sieges are way too uncommon in 40.24. I started my fort close to a goblin civ with 15,000+ citizens and haven't even had a single childsnatcher or thief, let alone siege or ambush. It's been 3 years in-game, I have almost 5 mil in created wealth and 103 dwarves but nuthin'...

On an unrelated note, apparently Rutherers can be impregnated while caged, by a male who is also caged. Unless they can be impregnated before being trained that is.

Things be interesting, my fort has been elevated to a barony, making this the second time I have ever achieved such. I made Xantalos my baron. Heh. Not much else has happened though.

Your populations need to reach 80. So maybe next year.
Anyway, I got my first siege in the 8th year last time.

Oh, and goblin thieves and snatchers are things of the past. I haven't seen any either.

Embarked in an area that's 50% evil. Made a catapult to fling various bits onto the evil side in case of invaders. First test went well except for a stray bunch of hair that landed inside the fort, causing a bit of a panic until my lone soldier came and chopped its head off. ???

He had been injured by a goblin ambush the previous season, and then went to the fort on his own two feet (yes, he had both); disabled all jobs off doctors and forgot about it. Now I just noticed my pop had one less, Mr. Adon can't be located in the [ u ]nits list, be it living or dead, I haven't seen his corpse anywhere, and there are no mysterious clouds of miasma floating around.

Wait for it to say he's been missing for a week, or if you've already had the announcement, make a slab and engrave it at the Crafts Workshop, when you place it you can examine it (I can't remember if you examine it using k, t or q) and determine the exact cause of death.

That's just it, I never got any message, and he isn't in any list - citizens OR deceased. I just happened to notice, in mid-summer, that population number went down by 1; it's now the start of winter and he's just vanished. He's probably on the map somewhere, but beats me where; I spent the rest of summer and autumn navigating around, looking for miasma clouds, and bupkis.

I'll have to remember to open the game log this evening, maybe I'll find a clue; this should be fun, since my game log hasn't been cleaned in months and is bound to be in the multiple digit MBs.

[edit] And I'm sure I didn't mistook him for another dwarf; I got his name from the blood splatter he left when he was bashed around by goblins: it is definitely Adon. There is just one other Adon, a hammerdwarf who's in my military and who's hale and hearty. This Adon, the clothier, has vanished.

Oh yeah, in the meantime I also pincushioned a FB, bringing this fort's FB killcount to 11.

Haunted rocky wastelands. New evil embark, featuring only bloody rain. It must neighbor with reanimating biome, or necromancers from nearby tower just got undead harpies and rattlesnake under their command. Set up the basic fortress, and undead siege appeared. Three zombies, two of which pathed away. I sent an adequate hammerdwarf to slay it, but damned undead human got lucky shot in the upper body. Dwarf lost consciousness and was beaten to death.

Next I've breached caverns. I built a nice outpost there, in a place where I can set up magma forges. Then I spotted a GCS walking freely. I set up a trap, though one stoneworker interrupted the spider when it was coming close to it.

Now I have two dead dwarves, and a caged GCS with broken leg on the first year. Going to cage a zombie, and use it in my silk farm. Would untamed GCS sling webs at zombies?

My dorfs have dug through the frozen aquifer. Now I can seal the entire fort.

Maybe a necromancer snuck onto the map, revived him (which would put him in "other" instead of "deceased") and they either fled the map or got stuck somewhere?

No bridges have moved since winter's atomsmashing round. No need...

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised... even if in the fort's 27 years no zombie ever set a toe on the map. The embark is not neighboring either towers or nasty biomes, and I'm pretty sure necromancers won't travel that far from their towers in 34.11.

[EDIT] Home sweet home; turns out I have a backup made 2 years prior, with a 4 dwarf difference between citizens. I'm currently checking the list of dead people to verify the name check, because I will no longer discount I may have gotten the name wrong. The process is greatly hardened by my use of nicknames and the game's habit of erasing them for military dwarves (of which I have a lot). Two of them, Litast the Hammerdwarf and Erib the Legendary Marksdwarf, are well accounted for (rushing like an idiot and FB syndrome, respectively); now I just need to find the other 2 differences.

Have you traded any cages? ISTR that if a dwarf gets trapped in a cage you can trade them away.

You can also try making a backup of your save and retiring your fort to check legends.

After setting the silk farm, I found out that GCS won't sling webs at anyone. I searched up the bug tracker and found the cause - the gcs was named after killing the stoneworker, and stopped being hostile towards my dwarves or animals. Need to cage the zombie sooner than I thought.

One of my dwarves had the misfortune of being on the same tile as a troglodyte when it stepped on a serrated disc trap. The troglodyte was utterly vivisected, but the dwarf was thankfully unscathed. However, she and the two children were drenched in the troglodyte's gore. This occurred about 4-5 more times before I bothered to seal off the caverns.

Other than that, the fort is going great. No attacks yet, but I've got a squad of marksdwarves to hold off anything that comes. I picked a great spot to embark on, too: native gold and hematite in the first few layers, with limestone near the caverns. The river is frozen year round, though, so freshwater can't be readily gotten.

Unfortunately a necromancer managed to find the tomb floor. So all 357 dwarves who've died at my hands rose up to slaughter the living. That being said my mayor turned to be surprise, surprise a vampire along with his new friend marksdwarf #7 the vampire so they just ignore the undead and the undead ignore them. Now its just two dwarves slowly killing them one by one.
