So apparently I generated a world without *any* iron in it. Therefore, no anvils. I am impressed, but not impressed enough to attempt an embark.

Actually, steel is available to dwarves on embark without iron for some reason. You could embark with 2 steel anvils, melt one down, and have a Bringing Steel Into The World Challenge >:)

Weird. Because when I searched for anvils, I could find none. Anyway, the save has just been razed to make way for a new world; one, hopefully, that has more useful metals in it.

Bastiongate's notable captives:
2 giants, both female
1 ettin, male
FB, lizard with sleeping spit
FB, worm with fire
FB, chameleon with unknown gas

I'm not sure how well my breeding project is going. The plump helmet men just aren't making babies. On a similar note, how can I view the thoughts of a non-dwarf, by hacks or no?

The Queen came to my fort.

She then later joined the Macho Men Wrestling Group.

She doesn't need armor to fight off a Goblin Menace.
The Queen now sits in her room with the trophies of war.

A 5-year-old woodcutter just hacked off a dingoes head with a battle axe.

(I'm cheating so children can work.)

I just noticed, but several of the fortress-born have taken lovers! Maybe I'll have second generation children - in 10 years, when some of the older dwarves have died to make room, that is. Also, my founding carpenter is having a strange mood.

Well, I learned a lesson: setting up a water reactor at the edge of an aquifer means there is always flow and no way to shut it off without a bunch of braking assemblies/pumps AND hatches over the reactor feed squares.

Once I was confident I'd be able to start and stop it I went ahead and dug out/designated the pumpstack, taking care to suspend all of them but the top before letting it be built top down step by step... takes a little longer, but the benefits, well... disable the brakes and flip open the feed hatches, all six wheels and three pumps spring to life and I was able to do the first thing I wanted, use it to get rid of the crappy little ponds around the fort, how does it work for that task?

It works wonderfully.

Got bored after the first siege consisted of a necromancer and a zombie... amusingly right as I was getting ready to test the pumpstack anyways... so I triggered some moods and geared up my favorite dorf there to take on adventures and explore some of the map before I come back with a backpack full of loot and legendary feats to share with everyone.

I tried to kill a troll so I lower the bridge...
But the troll was fast, it smashed the only farm plot in one hit, leaving my dorfs nothing to brew...

I'm afraid there's no beer this season, guys. ::)

The Forgotten Beast Nunur Taremrul has come!  A towering one-eyed toad.  It has thin wings of stretched skin and it has a bloated body.  Its mahogany skin is warty.  Beware its poisonous bite!

A weretapir arrived at my fort, and almost reached my gates before I could raise my drawbridges.
Naturally, some dwarves were caught outside.
I sent up my military, but it was almost too late already, the weretapir was on the bridge, alongside an unlucky fisherdwarf.
I saw that the lever was flipped.
The bridge raised.
The weretapir was cannoned into a nearby wall and died instantly, while the fisherdwarf was spooked but unharmed.

I recently built an indoor water-garden for my dwarves, so they would have a comfortable and stylish location in which to recline and drink.

Somehow the outpost liason has managed to get trapped in the below ground pool, and hasn't somehow managed to drown (vampire?). As such I now how a frantically swimming trader frightening my dwarves like the loch-ness monster.  :-\

Population reached 80.
Still no mayor.

What went wrong(right)?

You have to reach a season change once the pop is that high... it does seem to be a bit random when it gets around to an election, but it always seems to fall on a season-change.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

Yeah, I got a mayor. As expected, a trader.

My previous fort even didn't have an expedition leader before the election, which is really odd. Usually there must be a founder...the situation lasted for a while until I retired.

The Forgotten Beast Baru Zumzustlozu Gugoana has come!  An enormous frog composed of solid salt.  It has a short trunk and it has a bloated body.  Beware its poisonous gas!

There came a toad, then an earthworm, finally a frog.
