The King just arrived! He brought with him a few nice Dwarves... and... a Kobold Hunter!

Still, provided I can assign this guy to a chain or something he'll do rather well in the fort, I might even get him an "elite" team of Gorlaks to keep under his "command".

By the way, for some reason the General didn't show up with the King, but the 4 Legendary fighters did, will this guy show up eventually or will I have to do without him and just make the King the temporary leader of the Royal Guard?

Incidentally, my King's Palace is basically my Artifact vault, early on a mood got us an Artifact Door, and then, the kicker (and the thing that made me decide to go for broke) was an Artifact chair, which on it's own was enough to make his Throne Room Royal.

EDIT: Wow, the Kobold Hunter is actually going out to hunt by herself (also it's a she, how did I not notice this?), which means she's more useful than 90% of the Dwarves... I might have to not chain her up after all given that she's a valued member of society.

EDIT 2: She's also claimed a Nest Box... if we ever get a male Kobold Thief I think I may have to install a go-go dancer cage next to it... for science.

EDIT 3: Okay last fast edit here... sadly someone hauled her eggs to the kitchen... so that means sadly it'll be a long time before I get a Kobold army... wait unless she reliably lays eggs... in which case she'll actually provide two sources of food to the fort! What a worker!

After searching fruitlessly across many levels, I was unable to find anything but copius amounts of gold, and meager amounts of Tetrahedrite. No one was attacking, and an army equipped in adamantine and copper shouldn't go to waste, so I decided to join the circus. After realizing that this was a mistake, I walled off the main staircase, and got to work arming every dorf That could swing a pick. Silver maces, copper spears, and adamantine swords. I released the horde again...and greater fire deamons are neigh unstoppable without decent armor. 160 dorfs gone in 5 minutes. A job well done I'd say.

Due to a modding error, I once got sieged by an army of toads lead by a pyromancer. Not toadmen, not giant toads, but toads. The kind cats murder.

My fort has only 17 dwarfs but by the middle of the second year, there had been 4 babies!

I'm at the start of my 7th year and the last baby in the fort finally became a child, so no more Soldiers/Peasants using them as meatshields then getting bad thoughts!

One of the children in the fort just finished a mood and made a Gypsum Figurine of Dwarves, I think that they're now my only Legendary Stonecrafter, and I must wait for 4 years before they become of any use in that capacity.

Also, an update on that Kobold: Dwarf Therapist tells me that she's unfortunately a lesbian, so no Kobold army for me... but on the plus side she's the forts hillarious mascot... remember me saying she was useful? Ha! She's a Kobold, and as such gets terrified while hunting. She'll fire the first bolt, cripple the animal then run away in terror!

So she actually represents the Dwarves pretty well... the only thing missing is her being able to get a mood, take over a Bowyers and waste half the forts good metals as decorations for a Blowgun.

Incidentally, are Kobolds considered sentient? It seems I'm allowed to butcher her if I want to (which I don't, as she's hillarious), which is very weird given that we're Dwarves, not Elves.

-snip-
Wait, so you're using your kings personal guards children as a food source?
Seriously, just try and make your fort half-kobold. Kobolds are like competent children, in that they will reliably do work but can't be ordered around. Also, they don't drink beer, which makes them a lot less troublesome. This also allows you to set up a childcare system for them more easily.

Seriously, if you need a challenge, try training up some kobolds until they can kill FB's single-handedly.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see your new post, Neo_Spade. Oh well. At least she doesn't waste bolts if it turns out they aren't effective.

I got no more migrants this year....
I guess that was because I lost two founders and didn't create much wealth.

The caravan ran away while I was reading topics and waiting for the cook to prepare some lavish meals...

Oh, for some reason, my ice butchery workshop kept melting...what's so special about it? The temperature should be all the same.

Working on my outer wall. This is my first fort since the climbing update, and am unsure of what measures I should take to minimize risk of climbers getting over my walls.

What have you guys done to do so?

I've never used that program, so I'm having a hard time understanding that picture.

Because vanilla has no tameable sentients, the live-butchering filter allows butchering of anything tamed. However, once butchered, their various meat cuts will not be available for eating or cooking, and will be put in a coffin (if one is available).

I don't remember what the situation is with making crafts from their bones.

I wonder how the Dwarves will react to the Eggs then... I mean maybe when the Kobold Egg is finely minced and served with finely minced fava beans with some nice dwarven chianti they won't notice. To be fair they've yummed down Crundle meat before (if you count them as sentient) and didn't think twice about it.

Speaking of Flidus the lucky Kobold Hunter... she's finally gotten over the whole kill deers thing, she doesn't get the "Return Kill" bit yet though, but she's learning.

She was actually stalking another one when she walked right into the Goblin Seige that arrived! Somehow she managed to avoid getting turned into a pincushion.

Also, while this may just be the placebo effect, I think she made them take a slightly longer route into the fort allowing some straggling Dwarves to get inside ready for the onslaught. That or Goblins ignore Kobolds, still it was amusing watching her run from like 60 Goblins and Trolls back to the fort.

EDIT: Goblins, how did I spell Goblins and Golbins like three times?

EDIT 2: Huh... that's weird I could have sworn that Crundles had [CAN_LEARN] but I guess I was imagining it, and for some reason I also thought that you could tame Gorlaks, good thing that Gorlaks are good though, because I'm setting up a breeding program for them now and it's too late to back out of it now!

Also, there is one sentient creature you can tame and breed: Gremlins. Is it not actually intended to be the case though? Or is [INTELLIGENT] required for the creature to be counted as sentient?

My baron and my guest count were promoted into dukes. I don't think it was meant to happen together.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

They eat sentient eggs with no problem.

[CAN_LEARN] isn't enough to prevent a dwarf from eating it. It needs [INTELLIGENT] or [CAN_SPEAK]. (I learned this from a Good mountain embark where I was just swamped with Mountain Gnomes.)

I'm unsure how they react to critters with [CAN_SPEAK] without [CAN_LEARN], or [SLOW_LEARNER]. I know that goblins can tame critters with [INTELLIGENT][SLOW_LEARNER][EVIL], but not [INTELLIGENT][EVIL]. But those are goblins, sooo...
