Preparations have been made. A dorf selected for the duty of nobility as I'm positive some time in the next year or two, we'll be ready to ascend to official land. The caverns have been breached, a hospital built, and cavern barracks made ready. Said barrack's unit was quickly called upon to stare menacingly at elk brids so the workers could do thier damn job setting up the sealing bridge.

I'm positively giddy over the chance to see a war come to me for a change!

One of my war boars was kicked into the quarry pit, falling 50zlvls down before hitting the magma sea and drowninating/burninating in lava. A second war boar promptly charged the undead titan that had just killed its friend, knocking the zombie titan into the magma sea. Despite suffering tremendous trauma, the undead titan miraculously survived. At least I finally found what was causing those unexplained deaths.

Pretty sure Loud Whispers is still playing his 34.11 fort Silentthunders. Or Swordthunders. Whichever is the most recent with the hordes of undead ravens.

Warrior Iteb is the fort's first fatality. She tried her best, but once the troll got a grip on her leg it was over, with a half dozen ineffective mace strikes (due to the idiot targeting tusks,) failed to keep Iteb from getting her midsection stomped into the ground. Sergeant Kadol was overwhelmed by horror and only saved when Warrior Kulet came charging down the hall just as Iteb was killed and kicked the troll hard enough to break one of its shins before going all stab happy with her arming sword.

Not how I wanted my first death to come, but still it's more eventful than it's been in a while.

EDIT: And Iteb was a mother. Joy. The baby is amazingly unfazed by seeing mommy dearest die and is now waddling about 8 months from "not suicidal" by ambling about in the caverns saying "baga."

Expedition leader became king, though caravan still came from mountainhome, and nobody seems to have noticed. I don't have the economy (12 dwarves still) ready to make him really royal stuff, so I'm gonna concentrate on making him one oneice office with all his chests and stuuf, over several hundred squares dug out underground, some previously filled with diamond. Will train one engraver to legendary by having him smooth the OTHER massive mining room fully, for a simple but BIG royal bedroom.

2 years in, made several expensive artifacts, rooms full of masterwork engravings, beauty out the wazoo.
Still no invaders.
Not even a 5 man siege.

I just found one of the caravan's horses was thrown up by the draw bridge and the corpse was stuck inside a fortification.
Had to remove the structure to dump it.

Think you have it bad? I embarked right next to the f***ing dark pit, in 5 years i had exactly TWO 'sieges', the first had 10 goblins, the next upped the ante to 20... am seriously conidsering going back to 34.11, at least there the greenskins put up a fight!

In all my time of multiple 5-8 (or something like that) year forts I have had TWO goblin sieges.  :'( :'(
But I just use masterwork, it conveniently has a crapton of really scary enemies that will kill your Dwarfs with ease and a sick pleasure in the slaughter!  :)   But yeah, those frogmen white tigermen do keep me entertained until Humans or gobs arrive. (Yeah I have never been attacked by elves. I think they just send their most hated member here to die.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Up to over 61,000 blocks now, Silentthunders is has finally reached mountainous proportions. It's not quite an unscalable mountain yet, but can at the very least claim its fair share of megastructures. Going to dig up DF hack scripts from 2013 in an attempt to rescue some FPS; with any luck I'll be able to kill all those blocks without making my save cry itself into insanity. By the way, do you guys think it'd be cheating if I used a DF hack plugin to force a goblin siege? Silentthunders has so far endured decades of continuous siege in the 'Attack of Volcanoes' between the Necromancer Tower and the Coincidental Portals. No goblins. I'm caught half way between refusing out of vanilla pUristness and acquiescing because god dammit I want goblin sieges. More importantly - I want goblin prisoners.

...Then again, forcing a siege could also end the Attack of Volcanoes. And I'm not sure if I want that either.

*EDIT
Used cleancost.lua and my FPS doubled from 1 to 2. Success!

My first FB on the current embark is a one-eyed crab that shoots webs. I trapped it and built a silk farm, but it's only shot at the bait (a cat) once. I know this design worked in 0.34 - how do I get an FB silk farm working again in this release? :(

I suspect that silk farms are broken.  I had about 6 tamed cave spiders and they seem to want to engage in leg-to-hand combat more than web.  They only web once they have successfully landed a bite; otherwise, they just fight.  Which has gotten 2 of the 6 killed so far.  Sigh.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

According to the wiki there's a longstanding problem with using cats as bait; I'll try replacing it with a turkey and see if the problem persists.
