My hunters attacked a giant toad in the caverns, apparently they ran out of ammo and proceeded to beat it, which proved to be innefective.
The toad could not harm them, however they fell to over exertion from wrestling it.

So I called the military, it took a while for the soldiers to get there since their barrack in on the upper entrance. A single axelord came, chopped the toad's head off in one hit and walked away, probably calling the hunters noobs.

So basically, you've got what I imagine to be some kind of Glam-Rock Dorfid Bowie?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(ps. ignore the feather and beak on the crossbow, I read Pangolin and Peregine for some reason :S)

Heh, in my ignorance I saw "pangolin bone crossbow", thought "interesting, somebody is not using wooden or metal crossbows but bone ones from some bird bone", then saw that picture, thought "nice, he even added a feather on the crossbow to show it was from bird bone" and then was reading that P.S. like five times around, thinking "whaaat?"... "ehm, pangolin is a bird, isn't it, right?" *Google images* "ups" *facepalm* :D

But really, nice drawing (and fast one).

Since I'm not a native English speaker so I look up everything(usually those random minerals) I don't know in dictionary while playing DF, but I tend to forget them and have to do that again and again.

No outpost liaison?  How curious...
Hmm, it seems my civ is dead already.
Nah, you're fine. I didn't get one for three years on my most recent game, but one showed up the fourth. Probably worldly circumstances rather than the obliteration of your society.

The human diplomat came, told me the news form his homeland (two people got kidnapped) and left.
Or more likely tried, he decided to exit through the caves, just when a giant toad was sitting there.
I hope the humans dont get mad at me for this, his bodyguards saw the event, they killed the toad themselves, they shouldnt blame me for his death.

OH NO THE DEAD WALK

My above ground fort have only 15 dorfs so no way they can win.
Lock the doors!

The undead are all dwarf zombies, leaded by a dwarf ranger necromancer.

I have no access to stones. So I order the military to drop their weapons. Then they begin to torn down the top level of the tower and make some charcoals.

I decide to melt their weapons and make an atom-smasher. If I still have spare mechamisms, I will built a cage trap.

...

An speardwarf zombie begin to climb the wall. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be able to reach level 3.

A Jeweler decided to climb out of the walls to watch the wonderful undead army. Unfortunately a marksdwarf zombie climbed up and bashed him in the neck with its steel crossbow.... I guess everyone in the tower heard the loud bang.

More dorfs died. I blame the new climbing AI. But maybe they were too scared so they jumped from the tower.

Anyway I completed the smasher.

Turns out I can get a human caravan up here in he terrifying and frozen north. When they didn't show in year 2 I assumed they weren't coming at all. Unfortunately they arrived while it was snowing goblin blood and immediately left again. Strangely the wagon remained intact but the two pack animals dropped the goods they were carrying.

In other news a furnace operator mooded and I forgot all about him until I noticed him standing in the dining room and realised he wanted a forge which I don't have any of. He went insane before I could build one. Now waiting for him to stop babbling and die so I can bury him.

The undead finally retreated after my dorfs smashed several of them.
It is truely horrifying.

Yeah, the outpost liaison came after the undead siege.

Too many keas! I was wondering why my dorfs were becoming stressed when I noticed all the job interruption messages.

The caravan guards also hated them and killed many. But several keas were still flying around. I had to burrow all my dorfs, it was an unwinnable fight.

Really happy with my new secure fishing zone. Dwarves can't see their dead friends, monsters can't see my dwarves.

I found a {roast} on the archery range floor.
At first I thought some soldiers dropped their food...

But soon kea corpses began to fall from the sky then I realized what had happened.

My marksdwarves managed to shoot down most of them. But a few of them still escaped with stolen roasts.

I had to burrow all my dorfs, it was an unwinnable fight.

This clearly calls for the famous 'Baghdad Fortress' technique of building little marksdwarf pillbox 'SAM sites' across your map.

Yeah, I drilled some holes in the walls of my barracks and constructed some fortifications.
But the real problem is their vengeful thoughts, so I'd better not let them see the birds.

I got my first Roc visit.

I started running around to prepare, but then the roc anticlimactically wandered off-screen.

Later on, I started seeing roc meat in prepared meals. Wait what? Indeed, the roc was listed among the deceased, and had a combat report -- I could swear neither of those were present when I initially noticed the roc had vanished. The combat entry was too old, "no recent reports". Urist McMiller also had a too-old combat report nearby, but that was almost certainly for the buzzard (no way he would have survived single unarmed combat with a roc).

There's no record (via reports screen, announcement, deceased, or "others" screens) of anything that could have done battle with a roc. None of my dorfs have a roc listed among their kills. None of them vanished or died between the time when the roc was first announced and the appearance of masterwork roc-meat roasts.

I guess I'll never know what happened....

(another mystery, that happened months prior: shortly after a migration wave, I got a notice that two dorfs who's existance I had previously been unaware of "have been missing for a week". I carved memorial slabs for them, but the slabs just said "went missing in the year..." and didn't tell me anything. No bodies, no sign of any combat.)

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

now in year 9 near end of the year. still working on that oversized refuse stockpile 3 story house. df crashed 2 times at building that thing and i think i figured why. never try to build a wall when twigs are in the way, it will crash^^ got my civ some knowledge about wild boars and badgers that did wander into my entrance way and right in my cage traps. oh and the elves came with a 100 trees cap... now i am wondering if i can chop down 100 trees, or trees that yield 100 logs in total...

Store your save folder aside, retire fort, check Legends and look up those three names. You may find out how that roc died. With those two dorfs I guess you may be experiencing 8124, "Images can portray events the creator shouldn't know about". It also shows itself as offers of engravable slabs for units you have never heard about, as they have died somewhere down under your fort, even in parts not connected to surface in your embark area.
