A trio of snail men decided to climb the trees on my embark. One tripped and fell down four Z-levels, apparently hitting branches all the way down until his corpse ended up hanging three Zs up.

One of my masons saw the whole thing and is now curled up in a ball in the corner of my construction site, crying.

The remaining snail men realized they're too incompetent to be left to their own devices and surrendered by walking into my cage traps.

Made a world without demons and fooled around in the empty hell a bit. I even stumbled over an alternative way to mine slade, but it only really works in .34.11:

designate upward ramps dug directly under the surface. This digs one tile of slade and unveils the adjacent squares. However, it doesn't produce a ramp, it generates an _underground_ "open space" tile. The floor above is not broken, and the dug tile completely disappears, i.e. it leaves no floor behind. A slade boulder is generated but instantly falls to the level below - and gets stuck in an undiggable slade wall.
The normal floor can be channelled away after this, but that doesn't help either - you cannot dig into or build stairs into the walls below to retrieve the slade boulders. So in 0.40, this is useless.

However, in .34, you can simply use the deconstruction-teleport bug to pull the slade out of the walls: construct some floors close enough to the ramped-out area and deconstruct them again. All nearby items are teleported to the place where the deconstructing dwarf stands. I got a few dozen slade boulders this way and converted them into blocks, mechanisms and crafts (a slade sceptre weighs a very moderate 600 urists, about as much as a cinnabar boulder).

And no, you can't get slade warhammers without modding - slade is a stone and the only hammers that can be made from stone are _toy_ hammers (no, even moods won't get you around this).
A toy hammer heavier than a real warhammer, only in DF

Actually that may be realistic... I bet toy hammers are these big blocks of metal you see in fantasy media and real warhammers are well, real warhammers. The sleek, armor-piercing ones.

My first titan in .40.xx just visited Questmountain: Naturalmange the Grove of Weather, a great hairy slug with deadly spittle. One militia captain, Ral Testquakes, noticed too late that his comrades had stopped to puke their guts out on the way and had to face the beast alone. Ral took to the task like a true professional: he blocked Naturalmange's noxious spittle and dealt several blows directly to the giant slug's brain with "Phrasecackled the Ruin of Pets", his trusty steel warhammer. Unfortunately Naturalmange managed to get its revenge before expiring; it bit deeply into Ral's right foot and shook it's great frame until the foot was ripped off and Ral was sent tumbling through the air. It spat the foot disdainfully at Ral before slumping to the ground, dead.

Ral survived, and went directly back to barracks after being issued his crutch. Curiously he seems quite happy despite his wound and isn't even annoyed by it anymore. In contrast one another cripple in the fortress is sliding slowly into madness because of his six-year old amputation.

28th Hematite, 58

Some migrants have arrived.

Oh, so you're a high master Dyer? Cool! Here, take this axe, you're going to chop off goblin heads next winter.

(Clue: I am at war with the goblins, and despite needing only like two legendary squads and an archery squad to defeat a siege, I am getting really aggressive in recruiting. Maybe to help defeating HFS which I am planning to breach in not too much time. It keeps the metalsmiths busy, too.)

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

So... I decided to try out 0.23a.
I took some tropical freshwater swamp (I got gorillas and jaguar on map).
I carved some rooms for dwarves, mined out farming room and built two floodgates...

Three mistakes:
1. I set both of them to one lever
2. Didn't build door to block water
3. Didn't except water to move SO fast

One dwarf drowned in tunnels and whole map is flooded with water. That's quite amusing.

Today a flock of Kea descended upon my fortress to steal my stuff.

As far as I can tell, they were going after my weapons/ammo/armor stockpile because they flew in through the roof.

Of the Barracks.

I despise Keas (and the related animal men) with the very core of my being.

I love how the default ascii dwarves look so happy about killing all those parrots

On this fortress, I have decided to never mine anything. Armok blessed me with three strange moods:

- a migrant glassmaker
- a migrant mason
- a migrant glassmaker

I'm not sure why glassmakers and masons are coming to my fortress, since I can't build furnaces and there's no stone...

caught a few giant gray langurs, now I can finally start my giant gray langur breeding program and can stop trying to create tame giant hamsters...

I now have a breeding pair of giant keas. Am I asking for trouble if I let the eggs hatch?

They won't steal from you because they're tame.

Sadly, you can't then dispatch them to steal from the rest of the world.

Interestingly, my dwarves almost all worship a god of love and a god of death.  Very poetic...

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Random thought: how awesome would it be if a kobold ambush came with kea and racoons, blitzed for a few items and then ran away?
