welp, I have a bit of a military now.

Thanks to a trio of Grimelings.

One down, one that just won't die and one beating the crap out of an ill-prepared dwarf who seems to be healing about as fast as he gets hurt.

I decided that I wanted to get a decent run at a military, so I put two dwarves together, got them properly outfitted with copper armor. One has a silver mace and the other has a rusty iron whip pilfered from the previous goblin attack. They trained by themselves for a while, and then I decided I wanted to take out the Grimelings.

Well, it turns out that whips and maces do a good job of hurting the enemy, but I REALLY need some sharp weapons to actually cause some severe damage.

To that end, I got another pair of dwarfs together, and started them training. Then got impatient and sent them into battle after the first Grimeling was (finally) dispatched.

So now I have the lashdwarf, (rank 14 last I checked), the Mace Lord (15+ by now), and an unarmed/armored dwarf beating on a Grimeling, while the other Grimeling is beating on the other dwarf.

I REALLY need the triple-teamed Grimeling to die so I can go rescue the poor wrestler getting savaged.

On the other hand, once this is all over, I'll have three bad-ass dwarves, probably heading up 3 separate squads, each taking a different dwarf under their wing, while the fourth guy spends some quality time in the hospital.

If he survives. His skull is taking a hell of a beating.

A little later....

Tht was bad-ass. I put together a squad of 6 miners to help out, but waited until they were all armed this time. They didn't play a role, except for one finishing off the second Grimeling.

As soon as that happened, the MAcelord took a nap, then darted down into the tunnels, and much swearing folllowed him. The Lasherdwarf ate, drank, and rested. The Wrestler just collapsed into a hospital bed.

I kept monitoring the situation, mentally willing the dorfs to hurry up. Out comes my Macelord, in a new pair of Mithril greaves (thank you archeology), and charges across the field.

The Grimeling, who had been contentedly punching the poor sergeant's skull for the last three months, was surprised by the suddenly bad-ass warrior (15+ MAce, 15+ Fighter, 15+ Striker, Wrestling, Kicking, Biting skils here and there) that came up and bashed him in the head with a mace and knocks it over. Left foot, right hand, and another K-THWACK in the head.

Not even close to being done, the Macelord bites onto the Grimeling's left arm, and follows up with multiple punches all over its body shattering bones, and shaking the Grimeling around by the arm with his teeth. Then, casually, the Macelord pulls out a Copper Sword and lops its head off (it says torso, and the part sailed off, so close enough).

Then, casually, he walks off to clean himself off. He needed, after all, to clean off goblin and Grimeling blood after a solid six months of fighting in two separate three month sections.

I have my new Military Commander.

Dwarf Fortress is awesome.

My reclaim of Dangerhammers the Horror of Cheese did not fare very well. A zombie dwarf killed one of the new seven which caused two others to become severely depressed and starve themselves to death. After I got a few migrants, I thought I'd be good, but then all the dwarfs who died outside in the last embark suddenly came back and killed my militia which I'd had no time to train.

I started a new embark, again in an evil local. This time I already know to keep the butcher shop outside the evil biome to avoid hunters bringing in time-zombie-bombs. Unfortunately, I lost my hunter to an undead ibex which wandered in while I wasn't paying attention. The zombie squad took care of it, though. I have three axedwarves especially for hacking up unarmored punks like that.

I am finally getting my plant gather fiasco under control. I had half the fort gathering plants because stockpiles were dangerously low, but they kept hauling away the barrels, getting interrupted, and dropping them all outside. So now I have proper stockpile orders set up and the farm is finally finished so they don't have to go out all the time.

Once I finish my archery pillbox at the fort mouth, and finish the next round of simple spike traps, I should avoid losing many more dwarves to stray undead.

Oops, there's a caravan... hmm... better appoint someone to be broker. Unfortunately, I have no real trade goods, I've been so busy with defense and the food industry.

I never make crafts; Prepared food sells for 2000-6000 dorfbucks per pot.

Newton, it's a werebeast.
Basically, if you have an army that could kill one of your civilians, it can kill the elf before it transforms.

Ah.  That makes sense.  The announcement popped up a bit after the elven caravan arrived.

Next up:
The dead walk. Hide while you still can!

My first undead siege!  Only about 45 zombies and 2 necromancers.  Nothing a third year fort can't handle.  And by that, I mean that my perimeter wall had already been built.  My military size == 0.

That's what I would say too once I have my fort up and running. But crafts are easy to make for the first caravan or two.

Now that I have a steady 600 drink, 300 food, I doubt I'll build another craft in this fort.

Also wow it's amazing what a properly trained/armed/armored dwarf can do, compared to the slaughter I had last time I hada goblin ambush.

This time I held out against 2x the numbers, and 3x dwarves destroyed (want to say decimated but there aren't any left) 12 goblins.

\o/

I'm not usually much of a military dorf, but this changes my mind.

There's a gigantic mouse with poison in its fangs swimming in my underground cave and it doesn't look like it wants to engage my military.
7th Forgotten Beast for this fortress and I'm only 4 years in. I've also had a Titan and a Weregila Monster, which infected my mayor.

Because problems with power supply i was not playing too much, but i discovered minecarts from wood are extremly expensive.
Naked female goblins are now living in their cages above my main gate. My prison fort (with 33 goblins, two kobolds, some elfs and 2 womans and one man, dworf was executed for treason) have safe perimeter. Dead corpses are striking down in parts in my trade airlock: wood spike balls are nasty weapon and it's very good for trading if wood is not a problem (i have allready 70 beds and pop cap seted to 64, so i don't need more wood). All corpses are hauled to 'pit of death' in minecart. The same with remains.

Every month 3 from 10 not trained marksdwarfs are patroling walls, 3 from other squad are protecting main entrance from outside because flying dead birds. There is everyone in some squad, but nobody have in shelude any training, just because i need armor for them. If they're training in free time, it's okey for me, but first 7 don't have even baracks, because there is my brewer and cook. They have some metal armor from goblinite.

Minecarts are hard to managment, but awesome!

Just fought off about 20 dwarves and a bunch of bats.

I lost about 5 civilians, but got about 15 just before the attack, so meh.

My most frustrating thing is that my Military Commander dragged himself into a bed, and was ignored by the doctors. After this battle, another Dorf was put in the bed along with him.

I'm trying to destroy the bed, rebuild and get them to put the Dorf in another bed, and I'm reloading the game (Save, Load Fortress) to see if that fixes anything.

If I lose my Military Commander because of a glitch I'm gonna be pissed. That is one bad-ass MAce Lord that's just been sitting in the hospital for months, and missed all the action.

And all the Dorfs getting shot in the right buttock (not the left, the right) during this last ambush.

If They are in safe cover and there are not legendary bowmens, they're quite okey.

My militia commander - a legendary axedwarf with 115 kills under her belt, including 44 zombies - just killed a hairy ladybug Forgotten Beast by biting its head off.  And to think I was worried because she was only wearing half of her armor...
