Bigass magma piston.

I thank ye.

EDIT: Getting through the caverns proves tough. A challenge sure to bring praise to Armok, God of Blood.

Or you know, massively complicated minecart system?
Whatever floats your boat.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

New fort. Just hit the 3rd cavern and not long ago a magma tube connected to the magma sea. The 3rd cavern has a vein of candy!

I don't think the mountain appreciates what my dwarves are doing to it, and my dwarves know it.

Finished the first two steel armour sets for my first two melee dwarfes. They are ready to rumble now!

Is this big enough for a effective above ground fortress?

Just lost everyone in my fort to a zombie elephant seal... we had an armored squad too.

Just a child left who's gone stark raving mad. Maybe I'll get migrants, maybe traders will kill the beast...

In the name of Armok, what just happened?
One of my citizens was extracting strands of cotton candy, ran out, so he went down into our deep shafts to get more, and was interrupted by a Forgotten Beast.
I thought he was a goner, but then he beat the living CRAP out of that beast.
To quote the game itself, it was...
"The Forgotten Beast Sewat Kul Eslim has come! A great sauropod with lidless eyes. It has a twisting, jointed trunk and it undulates rhythmically. Its light brown scales are large and overlapping. Beware its poisonous bite!"

Enough is a relative term. You can stuff all your dorfs into a communal bed room, give them a communal dinning hall and keep everything at the surface quite compact with quantum stockpiles. I did that with a frozen wasteland fort once. Built a three story mead hall with some surrounding buildings. I might try it again if this evil tundra/wild arctic ocean thing doesn't work out.

You can cram a lot into a small space and farms don't need much room to supply a fort with food, so that should be fine. If it isn't enough you can expand it later anyway.

Someone got a secretive mood and made one heck of a casket.
There is NATIVE PLATINUM on it.
Seriously.
It's far more valuable than an exceptional platinum sarcophagus. When the monarch comes (All that's left to do is give 7500 worth of stuff to the caravan), this will be in their tomb, if not the entirety of it.
