In other, much more exciting and fun news...

 :o My first dragon.  MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA

I see you've graduated Pissing Lielac Off 101.
(Sorry, that was mean.. :P)

A bit. But mostly funny; I cackled. Grats on the dragon, Clover!

Laborfords
Obsidian 231

Overseer left the fort running while she slept and this time no one died while she was AFK. We're up to 97 beardlings and 174 total dwarves, and I stopped keeping track of marriages but several have occurred. And I have 24 peasants that I should really apply to doing things.

@Verdant: Pfffffffffffff. I might start doing that.

Drama. Who said what! Which bachelorettes framed the others! Gossip! Bedroom rep--wait, I mean, spore reports! BABIES.

Hehe.  It's too bad that fights don't break out in close burrow quarters, the way they do in small pastures for animals.  "When dwarves stop being polite and start getting real."

Edem IV is closest to Endok at the moment.  For a while, Lolor III was his second favorite, but she recently slipped into 3rd place.  As expected, Zan II has trailed behind the rest and isn't even considered a friend yet.  I kind of want Lolor III, the misanthrope, to win, but aside from choosing the 4 bachelorettes according to age, I'm letting the RNG decide.  Who knows, though.  When one of the bachelorettes goes to sleep, the others are able to increase their standing with Edem, surely by spreading gossip and slandering the competition ;).

Nice work, overseer-less dwarves of Laborfords!  As for the peasants, do you have a general, catch-all profession for non-specialists?

Not yet, no. I just let them do their thing, which mostly includes being a part of the regular "set masonry on ALL the dwarves!" Therapist checks. I don't have a custom grunt profession or anything, though. I need one. I'll deal with all that once I hit 100 beardlings.

~Graniteechoes, Year 2~

"What do you want me to do by myself? Fight the world?" ~Brwydro Yn Erbyn, militia commander

I thought he was on to something. Something as large as the world would surely get him some practice with his chainscythe. Some research into ancient texts on various combat masters yielded little, but as I was about to give up I stumbled across an ancient, eerie text entitled "The Shaft of Enlightenment". It detailed a small contraption that would grant a dwarf enough speed to quantum-phase through obstacles and strike at the soul of the world itself; to literally spar with Armok. One was constructed to exact specifications and once Brwydro Yn Erbyn felt he was capable of using his chainscythe, he stepped onto the portal and a peasant pulled the activation lever. It was over so fast; Brwydro Yn Erbyn phased through the upright training spears and in the instant he was gone something must have gone well, for as he reawoke he walked over to the back of the Shaft and hacked at it with his chainscythe, turning the rough wall into a masterpiece work of art showing three dwarves; one holding a mace, one holding a sword, and Brwydro Yn Erbyn himself; in bloody combat with what could only be Armok hiimself.
Needless to say, as children grew and were inducted into the Gambol Shroud, they went down the Shaft as well.

i've made a flame thrower. nothing special really, just reworked the silk farm with a trained dragon and an "enlightened" goblin soldier. Basic idea is that the enlightened goblin is a legendary +5 shield user and will block the dragonfire, leaving the goblin unharmed. But the fortifications allow the fire to spread across the room. Test results have been disappointing because I could not get a consistent flame. sometimes the dragon visibly breathes fire, but it doesn't spread. other times it spreads across the room. On the upside, the goblin was not harmed by the fire, meaning I can get a consistent source of dragon fire.

is there any way to improve my design so that fire spread is more consistent?

A month later...

Endok became complacent while in the lead.  When Edem went to sleep, she decided to flaunt her certain win, talking long into the night with the other bachelorettes.  It proved to be her undoing.  When Edem woke up, Endok was far too tired to continue her relentless flirtation.  She went to sleep, thinking her status safe.  Zon, in second place, tried to press the advantage, but Lolor III's candid, and some would say crude, demeanor charmed the bachelor and won his heart!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(Seriously, no overseer intervention beyond the initial choice of bachelorettes.  Endok could've won it all, but you snooze, you lose!)

*Edit*  Well, Endok certainly didn't take too well to losing...

i've made a flame thrower.

That's brilliant. I wonder if using a zombie would be more efficient, since zombies as far as I know will burn endlessly without outside damage. Dragon fire would just keep it burning, but I suppose lucky shots from attackers could kill the zombie...unless you had a necromancer chained in line of sight to the zombie but not the dragon. Then the necro would keep raising the zombie...and all the other corpses the flamethrower might produce...unless the dragonfire incinerates the corpses. I don't recall if fire does that.

Hmm. Maybe a legendary goblin with a shield is the better choice. Seems less complicated.

Things are better now since father and daughter were slain at The Rabbit of Huts. The family took a while to get over it, but a legendary hatch cover and obsidian coffin (the mother likes coffins) were enough to provide 3 great bedrooms. The mother gave birth to her last child, a daughter, about 8 months after the slaughter.

Population: 14 adults, 18 children, 1 infant, 5 harmless "militia-ghosts" of dwarven traders, 400+ zombies, 800+ deceased, livestock is under control. Obsidian farm works. Masons are flooring the pipework to keep out the fungus. More civilians wearing iron. Generator construction is complete though not operational because I haven't activated the flow yet. Once all that's done, then I'm gonna design a dropchute from the soil area straight to the magma sea ... or I may use my big stockpile of nether caps to move the magma upward.

Since the goblin is blocking the fire, maybe you can try moving the goblin further away, but still well within the dragon's sight.  I don't know the max range for when a dragon will breathe fire, but I've seen them do it from at least 8 tiles away and possibly 10.  That way, the goblin will only block a single tile of the fire cone when it is already near its widest spread.

Relicshield, Drama-Central

Endok Anguishedpages ran crying to the leather workshop after losing Edem IV to Lolor III.  By late Spring, she revealed her creation, which was at least semi-useful.

Impeded in her goals and passed at the last moment, the name "Trammelpasses" was fitting.

Started a new fortress. I was sick of always just using cavern soil for farming, so I tried irrigating a room I dug out. The drain I put in wasn't letting the water out into the caverns fast enough, so I had one of my miners dig another. As soon as he had finished, the resulting gush of water washed him out into open space, after which he fell 4zs into an underground lake and drowned.

Then the regional interaction I modded in resurrected him, albeit with a broken hand from the fall. All's well that ends well, except for the fact that his pick is still in the lake with the rest of his gear :V

RIP Meng Roughtaxed.  It sucks when a dwarf's lover dies before the pair can get married :(.

She was one of my first deaths, way back before I actually cared about this sort of stuff. She is so inconvenient. (I'll just draft Atis Bluefloors into the military when I finally get off my ass to start that up.)

Three names are at III, by the way: Bembul Abyssink, Olin Utteredinks, and Sakzul Abyssink. FUN! :D

Edit:
Also, I hecked up with Olin "Holeportals" (second-last female on the married list in the first image). She is an Utteredinks (Still only 3 Olin Utteredinks, because I got the number of those right the first time at least). I'm gonna need more dwarves before I manage to marry two dwarves with the same surname. FOR SCIENCE!
