... but Zon, Matriarch of Utteredinks, doesn't have any items preferences... hell yeah this sounds awesome. Sorry, Minkot, I'd like to really but Zon's more reasonable!

Edit, 10th Hematite: NIGHTY-NIGHT, NOKGOLSUVAS "RIDDLEDLUSTER"! I WON'T MISS YOU!

Glad to see that the saga of Laborfords is not over!  Grats on the mandate-less noble.  So who killed the cougar?

Relicshield, pop. 145, Mid-Spring of 353 (Year 102)

There was an alarming reduction in the booze supply due to the new lavish meals being churned out.  Especially with the legendary cooks Sakzul Fissuretour and Urdim Channeltree finishing meals in the blink of an eye, the brewers simply couldn't keep up.  For now, booze has been removed as a cooking ingredient, but larger farms are being considered.

One of the old migrants, Obok Lensarrow. She'd be a matriarch if only her husband had migrated with her, but nooooooo...

Hahahahhaahhahaahahahahaha. Do not cook booze, it's basically never worth it.

Speaking of booze, I learned it never goes bad. I have booze from two decades ago sitting outside and it's still just fine.

Only one dwarf is still miserable, but Tosid Regaldagger has a lover and so cannot be allowed to go insane. Luckily, he loves iron and I have a frankly ridiculous amount of it, SO now he gets to do some metalworking.

Edit, 7th Sandstone:

Okay, a tantrum spiral did not happen and I cleaned up all the corpses. Well, consolidated them into a pair of corpse/refuse piles.

Also, dwarves need to make wheelchairs already. My animal trainer Fikod Canyongalley has had useless legs since 207 and she could really, really use some wheels. Wheelchairs have been around since the 6th century AD, it's totally a thiiiiiiing

there's a puddle of goblin blood in my farm right now. I'm holding an investigation on where it came from

(you're wrong, I saw the DFHack happiness counter and there are dwarves all over the happiness spectrum; do not underestimate the ability of 20 years of friendships to induce a tantrum spiral),

If the numbers on the wiki are correct, a single death should not be enough to get a dwarf from "quite content" to "miserable", much less from ecstatic. And _normally_, a two to five deaths are still no serious risk.

Of course, sometimes dwarfs randomly pick up unhappy thoughts that are hard to prevent - exposure to the sun, exposure to bad weather, seeing a hated vermin... and if that coincides with a major tragedy, a dwarf can get dangerously unhappy. Still, in a well-run fort, the danger of full-fledged tantrum spirals is low and they will not manifest unless you get really unlucky (i think it was Relicshield that once got its population halved by a massive tantrum spiral ultimately triggered by a single well-liked dwarf succumbing to old age, but i think this was spectacularly bad luck for the spiral to actually kick off).

PS: i never got a giant cave spider to shoot webs, i must have misunderstood what conditions must be fulfilled. A chained tame spider would sit happily within sight of goblins without webbing them. Most of my silk farms use forgotten beasts.

For the people who've seen my latest post: Apparently a Yeti is hardly a challenge for a squad of marksdorfs. I didn't even get any wounded.

Things are moving along at the fort and the liaison just told us to make some silk earrings...

silk... earrings...

Yeah. At least they want goblets too so I guess we have a market. But still...

It's probably the "chained" part that's the problem. Try pasturing it behind some fortifications.

Okay, so I didn't get a tantrum spiral. But three deaths in a very interconnected fortress combined with cave-adaption irritation still managed to seriously piss off a few dwarves.

The GCS, unfortunately, wandered off, but all four FBs in the second cavern are now staring rapturously at an artifact green glass table. And I can seal them off at will from both the cage trap area and the cavern, so I can just sit on my butt and wait for a GCS to saunter along. WHOOOOOO

As for the GCS problem, I think it has to do with the whole "chained" bit. If you get a GCS again try the design on the silk farming page?

Dewboy II (named after the forum member) was killed by troglodytes in the second cavern.  Soon after, 2 other dwarves died of old age.  A fourth dwarf went berserk and had to be killed by the military, and then the whole fortress started rioting.  However, the real culprit was the small memorial hall I created 2 years before the spiral.  It made everyone friends with everyone else.  I've had similar strings of bad luck since then, but the smaller circles of friends have kept any rage contained.

Part of the reason I had the gladiatorial games was to get civilians with the "doesn't really care about anything anymore" trait without a puppy chute.  Most of the spectators were within 9 tiles of the battle, but I think the best I got was "getting used to tragedy."

For the people who've seen my latest post: Apparently a Yeti is hardly a challenge for a squad of marksdorfs. I didn't even get any wounded.

Glad it worked out!

Okay, so I didn't get a tantrum spiral.

Phew!

Three FBs down, and apparently dwarves are happy to butcher skeletons so I have... uh... 13 butcher's shops going at once to clear out the backlog of corpses in the corpse piles. Also we have 71 grizzlies and 147 dwarves and 32 FPS. And 114 ecstatic dwarves.

If you haven't already, caging most of the grizzlies can potentially help your FPS a good bit.

Inktrail just had our first dwarven child grow into a peasant! Ral Catchcopper just turned 12, and therapist lets me assign her tasks. :)

Still no migrants...it's mid-summer now, so maybe this autumn our liaison will come. All of our married couples have at least one half dead, which is rather bumming me out. Still can't figure out how to get dwarves to get married...
