Hnngh, yeah, cleaning up after an invasion is always the most annoying part of the military branch of the game. Seriously, did no-one teach them to pick up their stuff?

You can limit this annoyance by going into the entity_default file and reducing the number of active seasons goblins get. I used that for several years in my glacier fort, just so i could do _something_ besides cleaning up ambush droppings. Keeping them inactive in summer and autumn also meant i could actually get rid of some of those ludicrous heaps of troll fur socks by exporting them: caravans are less willing to cart your garbage off when they've all been eaten by goblins.

On a rough estimate, i'd say you need fifteen to twenty adult dwarfs per active invader season to keep up with goblinite imports, more if you want to do any serious projects. And seeing how you can get 30-goblin ambushes in 25-dwarf forts (15 of them adult), and three or four of them per year...

You need to create more useless crap to keep your idlers busy dumping it.

I'm interested in seeing what part them there dragons will play in the Centennial...

Relicshield, pop. 150, Winter of 351 (Year 100)

In honor of the Seven Settlers, seven dragons fought in the seventh and final combat of the Centennial Games!  The adult dragons Etog and Bestra were joined by three hatchlings of Ibmat and two of Mistrum.  The seven faced 117 goblins, 82 trolls, 3 yetis, and 1 kobold as the holding pens were emptied (except for the wombat men, who were deemed too adorable for dragon bbq).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The chill of winter was the furthest thing from the spectators' minds as dragonfire filled the arena!

The Seventh Match

The stands had to be cleared soon after due to all the smoke from the burning bodies.  Boiling blood also splashed quite a few dwarves, particularly those watching from the lowest level of the arena.  Still, all the dwarves felt the lung irritation and scalded skin to be well worth the sight of the fortress's dragons smiting their enemies.  All told 354 goblins, 197 trolls, 13 coyote men, 5 yetis, 2 minotaurs, and 2 kobolds perished in the arena as a fitting tribute to Armok.

ON the @VerdantSF question: you've got an obscenely long-lived fort, right? I'd like to check out the familial relationships there, because the wiki is under the impression that only royalty has grandparents, uncles/aunts, nieces/nephews, or cousins, and I have two walking disagreements. Well, one, because Sarvesh just grew to become a child, but whatever. Rakust still exists.

I never noticed that blurb on the wiki, but you're right, it's incorrect.  Here's a look at one of my non-noble 4th generation dwarves.

img

Bit silly to comment on this at this point, but I was looking through world history, and found that none of the dwarves were marked beyond what the wiki mentions. Perhaps the author assumed this of Fortress mode as well...

Also, pocket worlds with 1050 year histories are all about the immortals. Nothing else (Fun) survives that long.

You had one job, Flumentsuyo, and that job was not to Falcon Punch a sea lamprey in the side of the head. Now you're dead in the water with it, and we have a new fisherman, 18MAL65 - M4.

The wall, being top priority after what the tales of Dawntrade tell, is nearing completion. We only hope that we don't end up like the legendary Mosrael and Dyrim, or worse, Ranna...

Okay, maybe I missed something, but civilians get their own clothes...right?

I have a dwarf with a bad thought for having to wear worn clothes...but I am making plenty of them. What gives?

Dwarves tend to horde clothes, so even those with a complete outfit will sometimes grab clothes before someone who is uncovered can get to the stockpile.  I had one dwarf die due to melancholy because of this.  This happened even though most of my dwarves wear armor.

(Oh mah gawd, this is going so much better than Dawntrade)

The first year has passed, and it is Spring again! The wall has been fully erected, with a proper entrance now in the works. Two elven thieves were chased away by 22SAN65 - M2, each with a bolt puncturing their flawless elven hides!

All three caverns have been pierced; the ruined Dawntrade failed to realise that Skythes couldn't have helped them because they reside only in the deeper caverns. Canine scout triads have been deployed in the upper two caverns and have located a suitable herd of Elk Birds for domestication.

Farms are going swimmingly, with proper dwarven Plump Helmets being harvested year-round, not the pathetic Wild Strawberries and Whip Vines that Dawntrade spoke so highly of.

elven thieves

Why didn't I think of that? That means they're automatically your enemies too, I'm guessing?

Not automatically. I assume they're burgling me because both dwarven civs are at war with the three elven ones. My only trade partners are humans, dwelves and scythods (latter two from Spearbreakers).

Just had my first-ever DF crash.

Valefortress just lost a chunk of history. Not sure when from... don't think it's that serious... hm. Odd.

Check their inventory and see which item(s) are in bad shape. Dwarfs will often grab an "under" clothing for the lower body, which your civ generally cannot produce by itself, so they'll wear it until new imports come in or until the item falls apart. This causes some unhappiness, but it's _normally_ not dangerous, assuming the bases remain covered.

If that's not the case, the dwarf might have run afoul of military equipment (if they're in a squad but normally off-duty) or burrows (if they're in a burrow not encompassing the clothing stockpile).
