Started a new test fort to check out Modest Mod, and to fiddle with tilesets, and color schemes, but the fort grew on me. Everything is so awesomely named, one way or another. (Okay, overstatement :) )
In the year 15, the Ardent Mines, of The Ship of Armories, founded Fleshmetal.

I underestimated my booze stockpiles, thanks to the seasonal crops mod, luckily the moment we reached zero drinks, the elves came to the rescue with their berries, and a couple of barrels.  :-[

I have only found silver and lead so far, metal bars have to be imported, but no one has iron.

Had a small skirmish with Cave Swallow men, and a Molemarian, a hunter and a planter died in the result.  Uvash Calmfountains decided to become Uvash Berserkfountains, and started shooting at everyone with his bone crossbow, a loyal dog tried to stop him, but he shot the dog in the head, had to assemble a miner militia squad to deal with Uvash.

Beat back some goblin ambushes without losses, two heroes rose from the battles, Ber Granitefather the Savagery of Racks (pity it's not rocks :D ), and Cerol Murderedhalls the Roasted Beard of Quietness. Also there's a god of revenge named, Bim the Ignited Disemboweler of Throwers.

Accidentally released a troll near my chained giant cave spider, it took quite a lot of time to the put the troll down through the constant web spraying.

Found a magma pool, and started paving it over with microcline, to hold a magma industry.

Realized that keas can be nice, and sometimes clean up a battlefield after you, other times they rush headlong into your fort.

I'm in year 18, now.

Non-FB megabeasts die waaay too easy. In my current fort I sort of forgot about setting up defenses or my military (was trying new things with water and machinery), and so by year 5 or so I only had a single squad of poorly-trained, unarmored wrestlers. I was starting to crank out some weapons and armor for them, but then a !!CYCLOPS!! shows up well before I'm ready for it - or so I thought.

Long story short, I sent out my squad of misfits and they beat the thing to death with their bare hands. Only two losses - one that dodged into a river and drowned, and one that got ambushed by a giant tick while chasing the fleeing cyclops. The tick was much nastier than the megabeast (though the others did come back and beat the tick to death after they were done with the cyclops).

Methinks I'm going to add some NATURAL_SKILLs to all the megabeasts now. That was just silly.  :D

yeah i've got to agree that they just don't do that much. even titans aren't all that scary if they're not made out of steel or something crazy AND have something syndrome-inducing. forgotten beasts can be scary simply by virtue of the fact that they come out of what seems to be nowhere; titans show up on the edge of the map and you have a decent amount of time to prepare your fortress and mobilize military. you lack that with forgotten beasts. werebeasts aren't bad either unless they show up in the middle of your fishing operation and bite a bunch of people. usually I only get one or two bites.

Fire and webs are the worst for me as far as titans go. Toxic spewing ones I can just pepper with bolts and/or bullets until it bleeds out and anything else is rarely a match for my champion.

Plus the deadly bite and stinger ones are usually unable to land a hit with the appropriate poisonous body part when mobbed with military dwarves. Not sure if the noxious secretions one actually work right.

Anyhow, currently trying to decide how the heck I want to do the workshop layout and want to try something somewhat different from the last fort, but I can't make up my mind on how I want to do it.

Edit: I've decided to go with a modular design:



I'm thinking stairs in the central square of each grid or something, basically I'm trying to plan out the fort better for efficiency. The split quadrants should also help.

Also, apparently the embark that I'm on is very rainy, despite it being a badlands/desert biome, been raining on and off the whole spring, maybe it's a wet season/dry season place.

I'd put stairs on the gaps between the 6x6 rooms, unless of course you're putting doors there. I would've done something else than 6x6 though, because I'd be tempted to put several workshops in one of those, and that leaves little/no room for stockpiles or stairs, and you actually have to watch what the impassable tiles of workshops are. Probably 7x7, if I didn't use 11x11s like I usually do.

The Bastion has had several moods in the past 2 years

The Library of Man, Wood troll bone boot. Legendary Bonecarver result (Secretive)
The Jail of Strife, Badger bone mask, Legendary Bonecarver result (Fey)
Knottedwithered, an oricalcum abacus (possession, metalcrafter)
The Lauded man, Orichalcum Doomknight armor, Legendary Armorer result (Fey)
The Glossy Banners, marble door, Legendary Miner result (Fey)
Conjunctionflying, graphite amulet, Legendary stonecrafter result (Secretive)
and Confusiondimmed the Planned Hero, smooth wood splint, legendary Carpenter result (secretive)

The Lauded Man has been awarded to Col. Shasad. The rest have been placed in the diplomatic quarter near where Olon's Culinary Wonders would have been, had he survived the wars with the Ashlanders and Warlocks. If we get a second bone boot though They'll be given to head of the Air Mages.

The Apostles have also managed, with the aid of the humans who provided the blood catalysts needed, summoned a second destroyer who now watches over the caverns. Already both have proven their worth, the cavern guardian beating down a toxin spewing FB, earning the name of Blottedlance and the surface one drove off the third attack by the beakwolves, using two war alligators as baseballs and choking the life out of one of their predators.

We've also made several discoveries, reviving the lost arts of plate forging, coin pressing, dwarven toxicology and biology, rockforging, ammo casting, trap upgrading, and cold forging of alloys. We have also, at the behest of our Drow allies, purchased a broodlord and broodmother. While we at first knew nothing of their purpose they son paid for themselves, producing semi-intelligent dwarves I've since come to call broodlings. They've made wonderful herbalists and cooks and one has been taken as an assitant to the Apostles. One has even replaced a trueborn dwarf in the airmage squad. Even if they turn out to be magic retards, they can still fight once they've made a masterwork.

The Rustic Urn may yet live on thanks to them.

i forgot that i locked the doors to the caverns.

One dwarf, my armorer in training, threw a tantrum because her shoes wore away.

luckily, she didn't go beserk and i managed to pacify her in time with dwarven beer and mandates for steel leggings.

A possession mood resulted in another graphite amulet. Has the other possession result on it in bone and mithril spikes.

The drow came, bearing raptors, cave bears, dewbeetles, and cavernkeets, a little booze, plants, stuff like that. Just before they arrived, a lovely visit from kobolds confirmed that when punched by an iron colossus, kobolds are extremely aerodynamic. Some goblins also attacked, and met with a rather messy end, one being strangled to death, some being torn apart by traps, one being bludgeoned to death with his own coat, and another being used as a lawn dart that was flung the length of a hallway. During the clean up of severed limbs and tenderized goblins a broodling runt got snatched by a bandit. Joke's on him though, since it wasn't a trueborn dwarf.

Seriously, @%@# mudstone. It is depressing to look at. Maybe its just my tile set, but I don't get that vibe from any other major stone. It is the only stone in which smoothing my walls makes it look worse, and don't get me started on the above ground constructed walls. It's like I'm in a mud hut.

Yea, I feel you. Feels like I've just gotten possessions. And one of my moods was for my CMD, who had helped out with mining before the first migrants. At least it gave a throne that boosted my dining room's value nicely. My only gemcutter(-in-training) got a possession, too.

I don't mind possessions when they don't use my hyper-important materials, in this case steel (I have no hematite or anythigng similar so far and as such need to rely on humans for it,) orichalcum, and mithril (need to rely on elves for that.) Don't get me wrong, as a general rule I dislike them simply because of the wasted resources with something that is usually useless as the outcome. The Bastion thoughhas had some good fucking luck with it's armorer both being a legendary and producing a suit of orichalcum doomknight armor (whatever that is; sounds badass.)

The dwarven diplomat has just arrived!

... hang on, isn't it still summer? The human caravan hasn't even come yet (granted, the elves only started leaving in early summer, but still)
... what's this, he has 2 humans for guards, that can't be right, let's check units screen
... wtf, "Nocam Shibbigil, law-giver vampire"... which does explain why he's already inside and several z down my fort, when the guards are still outside the surface fort. Also, "He has incredible muscles stretched over a broad body."

edit: to clarify, the law-giver vampire is "A short sturdy creature fond of drink and industry", also known as a dwarf. Which just adds to the confusion, but law-giver + human guards means he's apparently from a human civ. In which case the confusing part becomes why did they send a diplomat?

It's harder than you think to cause a fell mood. I requires a tantrum spiral to occur right when you get a mood, and the mooding dwarf has to be one of the unhappy (maybe miserable) dwarves.
