I've decided to retire Quakeswalled for personal reasons. Yes, it broke another seige and had some good stories, but it's also good to give the dwarves a happy ending.

What have I learned from nearly losing this fort? The outside world is hella scary for a 15-dwarf fortress. Complete shutdown time. Nothing leaves the fortress, nothing enters it.

The new cistern means the dwarves don't have to leave for any reason. Stoneware blocks can be produced entirely inside the fortress due to the presence of clay and magma here. There's a small herd of alpacas for meat and farmable land for replacement farms (the old ones are outside)

I might open the doors for caravans. Maybe. What would be a good way to bait out any ambushes without risking dwarves?

Let the Caravans bait them. :)

Honestly, raise up a ton of dogs, make a bunch of ropes, and stake the dogs out all over the place.  They'll trigger the alarm.

Memorializing dwarves.  I just laid a slab for Minkot Mistomodok.  Born 158.  Bled to death in the year 257.  Loving father and husband.  Admirer of ass demons.

The outside world is scary. The fort was running along smoothly for a season, then the mountain titan Kadest Abliusan Xiza Racon arrived.

It's a giant, hairy, web-shooting pterodactyl with mandibles. That's really badass, and its first show of badassery was flying right over my walls and massacring my dwarves. The same traps that tore apart an entire goblin ambush dented its wing.

The titan is closed off in a workshop room for now, though there's a stairway for it to escape through if it so chooses.

Once again, I'm reduced to having one dwarf. Once again, it's a completely useless one: a carpenter that just managed to dodge through a door after the titan broke her back. She's laying on the floor, pretty much unable to do anything. I'm not sure I can recover this time.

edit: A human caravan arrives. Showdown time, motherfuckers. One titan versus one caravan guard. I carefully unlock doors to lead the humans right to the titan, but right as the first ones get there the back of the caravan gets distracted by a goblin ambush. Those fucking goblins are always ruining my day.

This leaves two human soldiers and a couple merchants against the titan. The axeman fights valiantly and manages to lightly damage pretty much every part of the thing, but there's no kill.

But wait, a second goblin ambush picked off a merchant that fled to the south! And they're still standing there. Showdown time, motherfuckers. Using my last dwarf as bait, I fiddle with the doors to lead the goblins into the titan, which is now on the roof.

This time, there are more than two against the titan. They wound it and manage to spill its guts out, but it's entered its death throes now. And by that I mean the only attack it's still capable of using is its web attack. It's using this every single turn. The goblins are pretty much completely immobilized now.

I hope the damn thing bleeds to death.

edit: A third goblin ambush appeared. How did they appear? Lodged in the titan's web. They're stuck now too. This titan is keeping nine goblins completely immobilized. I've never seen a more hopeless stalemate.

edit: HEADLINE: MIGRANTS SAVE THE DAY (AND MOST LIKELY ENSURE THE DEATH OF THE FORTRESS)

The migrant wave was the only thing that could have stopped the stalemate, and that's exactly what they did. I cleverly positioned the citizens with a burrow directly behind the titan, so it started shooting its webs at them. That distracted it enough for the goblins to break free and get into melee range. They killed the fucker. Now the goblins are free to roam the fortress. I'm going to try to lure them into traps, but I don't think my citizens will cooperate if they're being chased by goblins.

edit: So the first goblin ambush got torn apart on the traps and left, but the second one is pretty much standing on the traps at this point. I hope they decide to leave before these last two dwarves go insane.

edit: And they found the last dwarves. Blow the Smoke has finally fallen, guys. We had a good run.

Entering Year 6 at Relicblaze.

Pretty uneventful after the second goblin siege was crushed.  A giant stag beetle forgotten beast entered, was spiked by a trap cell, and then butchered and added to the larder.

The militia is entertaining themselves by chasing down kobold thieves in the tunnels and slaughtering them.  A marksdwarf squad was promoted - they were presented a short sword, metal bolts, bronze armor, and sent to a new barracks area better placed to use the archery bunkers than the archery ranges.  The other squads are slowly improving and a few squads have gotten coinstar sessions to help their armor use skills.

The fortress was promoted to county, and we expect the duchy promotion this year.  At the same time the mayor's office is turning over on an annual basis.  Fourth mayor, and a different set of mandates with each one.  This one likes gloves.

Experimental work with the minecart gun has eventually gotten some results.  A cart is shooting water "balls" on a roughly 300-tick cycle onto the surface.  Slow rate, but it seems to run consistently off a filled reservoir that should be good for a fairly long series of shots.  Shots are traveling roughly 18-34 tiles down range with a left/right variance of 1-6 tiles.  About 40% of the test shots turned into an ice wall on impact.  The others produce a muddy ice spot in the snow.

Some groundhogs wandered onto the range during testing so some impacts were seen.  Similar to boulder hits with the animal skidding 5-6 tiles and taking additional minor damage.  No animals "ice balled" by hits, which would be a nice effect and probably worth the weaponization effort.

Now attempting tweaks to improve fire rate with existing set-up, possibly by getting a second cart cycling at the same time.  The system itself could probably be compacted as well for a shorter cycle distance.

Hoping to get some goblins walking by soon to see how they are affected.

Fortressbowel, pop 255, year 18

Bonun the eight legged amber quadruped(???) that shoots deadly dust has come!
The military was sent to deal with it and they did it with ruthless efficiency, the creature was finished by 16 year old Asen Breachedhames the Flighty Rampage of Volcanos with a punch to the head that detached it from the body and sent it flying.

I assumed the operation a grand success, with no visible injuries reported when on the trip back up to the fortress some dwarves started retching and vomiting and also some mysterious bleeding. On close inspection they expressed feeling very drowsy and they were sent to the medical ward for diagnosis.

The doctors came up with nothing and the patients were released but they still vomit and bleed all the time and I am terribly worried. It seems Bonun is trying to reach beyond the grave for squishy dwarves.

Man, the Death Bridge is a failure ! Even if criminals are thrown away and down of three levels, so little bastards are sturdy creatures indeed ... too bad, I'll atom smash them anyways :'(

If hamster are useless, then I don't get how "catch a live animal" is useful for, as I cannot designed those to be slaughtered and didn't see how to sell them away
Back in the days of 40d the only way to make cheese was catch Purring Maggots. In 0.34.11 this is no longer true, because cows can be milked.

As for the use of tamed vermin, try selling a cage of them. I suspect the price you get will be a little higher then you'd get for just the cage.

Check your dwarves closely and see if they have FB dust on them.  If they start tracking it all over the fortress you will start having everyone who gets exposed coming down with that syndrome.  Deadly dust extruding monsters are among the most dangerous you can encounter if their dust syndrome is nasty.

If they have dust on them you need to figure out to get them rinsed off and then the contaminated water disposed of.

I've inspected the afflicted dwarves (4-5 which arrived to fight the FB first and where exposed to its dust) and they all are clean of any forgotten beast frozen extract. I used dfhack to get rid of 4 pools of the stuff by the well where someone washed it off I think.
Other than the trails of blood they leave everywhere they go they seem to be perfectly fine, they are not even vomiting anymore and the drowsiness is gone too.

Very mysterious

So I'm minding my own business, trying to harness the power of a river in the bottom of a chasm. Just watching my dwarves to make sure they don't fall in from the force of the waterfall. I get distracted for a moment because a kobold tried to get in, but was chased off by my dogs.

A few moments after that, watching the guys digging out the back of the waterfall and building grates over the lake, I see something fall in. I go down a z-level and see that my dogs chased the kobold into the river, and right off the cliff over the falls.

I needed to gen a new world since I managed to pretty well ruin the one I have been using for my previous seven or so fortresses.

I know what I must do.

It's either a relative of Sleipnir or it's an euphemism, although in the latter case it'd be rather disgusting - and would it make the military sent in to break up the romp a decency patrol?
