Wounddrinks is currently in summer of the third year and the humans are currently unloading their goods. A few highlights so far.

Another artifact:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Mind of Eating is worth 48000 urists, and isn't too special.

I've breached the first level of the caverns, and it's not much of an issue so far. A giant cave swallow came up and attacked the broker, and a troglodyte killed a hen, but traps have been installed to help make sure that nothing else comes up. Otherwise the caverns been peaceful so far, and a good source of wood. This will likely change when I go deeper.

The main thing that happened was a goblin ambush. A squadron of bowgoblins lead by a speargoblin popped up near the brook at the bottom left of the map. I sent all the civilians inside and ordered the military to attack the goblins. However since Wounddrinks has a significant fishing industry, and the brook is the main source a fish, several civilians were near the goblins when they popped up. Most escaped to the fort but three of them and a pet yak were not so lucky. The bowgoblins knocked out dwarves using their arrows and the speargoblin then finished them off with a blow to the head. The three dwarves and the yak were all dead by the time the military arrived.

When the military arrived Likot, the commander, was first to charge at the invaders. She was the most skilled of the military, and blocked the goblins arrows as she charged toward them. Once she was in range to use her sword a single arrow managed to hit her. This arrow hit in the head, killing her instantly. Two other dwarves were shot in the leg while charging, breaking the bone and knocking them out. The rest of the military managed to kill the speargoblin and two bowgoblins without a scratch, causing the rest to flee. So my military won, but at the cost of the commander and best soldier. Though this isn't that bad, at least by DF standards.

Glad your soldiers pulled through.  A squad of archers in the early game is pretty frightening!

Thanks. Likot blocked most of the arrows so I think it was probably a lucky shot that got her. But yeah, losing my commander and best soldier in a single hit was pretty shocking.

Well, looks like the ambush wasn't over. After a bit more playing, two things happened. One, a goblin snatcher appeared, but tripped a cage trap. Nothing to get excited over. Two, there was another ambush squad, all swordgoblins. They popped up near the gates, but didn't do too much damage. The human caravan was there and dealt with them easily. One got caught in a cage trap, and the rest were slaughtered by humans. One did attack a recruit that was heading towards the barracks. Poor guy had no real skill, so he took some damage. Goblin tore up his feet, one of his arms, and took one of his hands. This was definitely not the Lashes of Diamond and the Pulleys of Strength's finest hours. At least the doctors have the opportunity to get some experience.

Olm men. more olm men. Even more olm men. Where the fuck are you bastards coming from, and why are you constantly sneaking up my stairwell only to be horribly murdered by swordsdwarves.

WHY.

EDIT: The Ferrics have come in force yet again, this time lead by their High Queen, Soya Efivuyane.
Their force consists of a massive horde of sword and maceelves with a squad of bowelves and blood wolves backing them up.

Their queen appears to be a master bladeswoman, but oddly in neither armored, clothed, and even more strange, even armed. Her skin is also deathly pale, her hair white as snow and eyes being gold. Had I not genned this world without secrets I'd worry she was a necromancer.

They came seeking revenge for their felled trees and slain brethren. They shall find only death, and their Queen shall be counted among the dead.

EDIT II: Not only was she among the dead, she was the first one to die. Sgt. Hailsmiths lead Privates Imush and Udil right into the Queen's Guard and she plowed through them all, leaving the maceelves and their crude bludgeoning tools to them. She sliced away an arm, both legs, and finally bisected her.

It's made all the more humiliating as she turned and tried to run as soon as she sighted Obok. Apparently The Destruction of Blindness' reputation precedes her.

A beaver monster diplomat from Strammong Caslu has arrived.

I like that announcement. Time to Google me a beaver monster.

Yep, that's what they see.

Good to see that Obok is still kicking butt.  Is she also the Baroness?

No, sadly. I selected a jeweler who had some relatively easy to satisfy demands named Ber for the job. However, for her killing of several large monstorsities including a fire-breathing hill titan and a hydra, on top of killing a head of state, I have finally made her the official Champion of Mothramavuz. I feel the need to say this now. Ahem...

"Obok Iluneshtan Terstum Murak has become a legendary champion! Hail Obok Iluneshtan Terstum Murak!"

Epic awesomeness.

One of the most interesting parts of DF for me lately is that I play it at times when my son is napping. I have a tendency to respond quickly to him, often leaving the game running. This causes some !fun!  For example, I completely missed my second seige, getting a warning, moving dwarves into position, leaving, and returning to a distinct lack of goblins, and a surplus of giant toad parts.

Anyway, I returned to the computer at one point to find an announcement for a new Forgotten Beast, a three-eyed ladybug. She had arrived amonst a bunch of crundles, and I was hoping for carnage. I looked at the combat reports after unpausing the game. No carnage... but wait? Who is fighting? My legendary planter??? A giant scorpion Forgotten Beast somehow came up my well (I think). Took out the legendary planter (why he was down there, I can only speculate. Probably getting water.). I lock the hatches and check who is still "below". The nearest dwarf is a crappy miner, a crappy planter, and a rusty but decent craftsdwarf. Man, Edem here practically deserves to get mooshed. Too bad.

I round up the troops above, and station them near the locked hatch, ready to charge. I check on Edem, after having unpaused the game a little. Well! Edem is an axedwarf too! (I had combat skills not showing when I checked him!) This could be a duel, or just the quick loss of a decent axedwarf. Edem and the scorpion stalemate a bit, with Edem getting knocked around a bit. Then boom! He gets a shot in! Yes! But wait. He's using a pick. Oh man, uniform conflict! And he's not wearing armor!

But his training held true, and with some parrying, a lucky snag in the cloak, and fancy footwork, he finally got in a lovely shot to the cephalothorax, puncturing the heart, and then another to scratch the brain for the kill.

He then proceeded to remove most of his clothing in preparation for putting on his military uniform.

Well done, Edem!  These are the kind of moments that really make the game shine!

At Drownedgears, the new improved (precise? hopefully) clock is beginning to take shape. The functional machinery for counting days, weeks, months and seasons is set up and linked. Two major tasks remain before the clock can be started - calibrating the actual _clock_ (i.e. the circuits that split the day into an hour display; since the partial clicks running those won't be step-precise individually, i'm not too concerned with getting the 50-step intervals absolutely right, but i don't want aberrations of more than one step) and getting most of the year counter sorted. On a first estimate, that'll take a modest 40 hatch covers, but something like 300 mechanisms involved in 120 linkup jobs. Currently, it looks like this:

Nice and clean. It's a four-tier decimal counter, so should be able to count to 10.000.

Whoo boy, the caverns. First, this guy shows up:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Osel the Loyal Menace of Soils. My very first forgotten beast. I haven't had a serious fort since the days of 40d. So, this was my first time dealing with these kinds of baddies. I sent my military down to fight him (having drafted two dwarves to replace Likot and a heavily wounded dwarf who can no longer stand or grasp) and got ready to seal off the caverns if need be. I didn't need to. Osel began flying around, harassing a few dwarves with his gas, which came out a boiling extract. This did nothing. It was all he did combat wise and there were no effects. When my military fought him, that he didn't fight back besides spewing the gas. My new militia commander, Goden, a siege operator with macedwarf experience before he migrated, attacked with a sword wielding recruit. Osel flew out of reach until the recruit managed to cut open one of his wings, and then he stayed on the ground. Goden and the recruit then proceeded to destroy Osel while he just kept breathing his worthless gas. After a while a recruit with a spear joined in, and helped reduce the forgotten beast to a bloody pulp.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I managed to luck out and get an easy forgotten beast. But that wasn't the only terror coming from the cavern.

A giant cave spider attacked a hunter that was prowling the cavern. It webbed her up, bit her head, injecting venom, and then proceeded to shake her about by the head. Over and over, ripping open new arteries each time. It was horrifying. I deployed the military to fight save her, but by the time they arrived her head and neck were mess of bleeding tears and bites. The militia tried to engage the spider, but those who did from the front got webbed themselves, repeatedly. The hunter was released, and the spider then bit and shacked a recruit by the head. The recruit and the hunter both died.

The captain of the Pulleys of Strength, Kogan (who is also the mayor), had the idea that instead of trudging through the mountain of webs in front of the spider she would attack from behind. It turned around and webbed her before she got a hit in, but points for creativity. At this point it was starting to look like something from a horror movie. Everyone was webbed and at the spider's mercy. Then, while the spider was busy re-webbing the captives, a macedwarf by the name of Sarvesh and another hunter reached the spider. Since the spider was focused on everyone else, Sarvesh managed to reach the spider without getting webbed while the hunter provided support with his crossbow and bolts. She began beating the spider with her mace and killed the beast.

Giant cave spiders are a bitch. Game's starting to test my military, and I worry it isn't up to the task. And something has caught my eye. One of my recruits was badly injured by a goblin swordsman during an ambush, and the damage was extensive. He can no longer grasp or walk. As such he can't really fight, and has no skills to teach, so I released him from the military. He then decided to have a soapy bath. He crawled up to the bar stockpile to get some soap. When he got his soap he started going to the well to wash up, and dropped the soap as he can't grasp anything. So he went back to pick the soap up, and dropped it when he moved again, over and over. It's honestly kind of depressing. He doesn't seem bothered though.

I almost let a spoiled child perish for his whining, but I'm glad I spared him.
NobleFort has everything a fancy mood could want. Bars, lots. Blocks, plenty. Bones, yep. Wood, sure. Cut Gems, of course. Rough Gems, donated from MigrantFort. Silk, waiting. Fiber, of course. But when I saw he was stuck, the "stacked cloth" meant he wanted yarn.
I eventually gave him yarn. In return, he made a Horse Bone Amulet. But on the amulet is some blue peafoul leather in the shape of a vampire queen named Homura BodiceSalves.
Quakeswallowed will get a vampire yet !

Dear Queen of the The Closed Dagger,

I, the expeditionary leader and soon to be the last living resident of the outpost Goldsquash, wish to report on our status to you.

First, when we set out to these unruly lands, I specifically remember asking you to keep our numbers small, around 50 or so, so we wouldn't attract the attention of our neighboring goblin outposts.  In spite of that, your infinite wisdom insisted on only working from the reports of your liason, who stayed so blindingly drunk during his last visit I'm surprised he knew how many fingers and toes he left with.  I have no idea what he reported to you, but two waves of migrants of nearly 30 members EACH would certainly far surpass the 50 I requested us to stay at, nevermind our original members.   I want to thank you for that and explain to you how that affected us.

First, you must understand that our aquifer problems were never ending.  Two years in and we were still drilling over ten stories deep into the earth, trying to get past the Armok bloodied water.  Our defenses consisted of wood and bone.  Yes, wood.  The same offense that you burned the elves forever out of history for, we had to use for defenses... for our ever increasing number of citizens.  You can thank your drunken liason for not mentioning THAT little tidbit.

After this last winter, the last set of migrants you sent to us apparently had no idea how to cover their tracks, being filled with legendary cheese makers I can only assume you sent us the occupants of Starship B.  Well, they're here.  In spirit anyway.

While we tried to deal with the influx of people in our incredibly limited living space carved of dirt, the goblins tracked those migrants to us.  Seeing a large number of dwarves, instead of moving on for more valuable prey, they stayed.  Two units of goblin bowmen and hammermen have hit our meager defenses so far.  Our hunting/ranger unit lost their minds during the first ambush.  Only two survived.  They still won't obey orders to get INTO the palisades and are currently so enraged they're clubbing the goblins to death with their crossbows... or teeth when they lose those.  Our entire stock of livestock have been killed or are lost.  So far our Water Buffalo has claim on having done the most damage, and he's currently running for the mountainhome.

Inside, the dwarves have gone mad with anguish.  Because we just didn't have room for all these people to work indoors, many were trapped outside.   When the goblins struck many died in the first wave.  The rest are killing each other.  Luckily they're blind with anger and grief and don't look around a corner or they'd see me furiously scribbling this in my office... which doesn't even have a door.

So, mountainhome and Queen, I leave you with this regard:

Do not return to Goldsquash.  It is haunted.  And if I can get my corpse into the river and float it anywhere near the mountainhome, I will personally come to haunt you until the end of your days, my ever wise and loving queen.

-Erush Egdothgeshud, leader of Goldsquash, soon to be sacraficed to Armok's bloody grace.
